Tension gathered in the insurgency-ridden region as the Central Reserve Police Force killed the protestors and injured over 100 others as they headed for a demonstration planned in the state's summer capital Srinagar.
Ahead of the rally, police had detained three separatist leaders from Kashmir's All Party Hurriyat (Freedom) Conference. The conference is leading the unrest. Paramilitary and army personnel also enforced the curfew in Srinagar and the rest of the Kashmir valley by deploying armoured vehicles and rolls of barbed wire.
There have been massive rallies across Kashmir in recent weeks in support of independence from India and a union with neighbouring Pakistan. The Himalayan province is divided between the two countries and both claim it in its entirety.
Security forces have killed at least 27 Muslim demonstrators and injured 500 others in protests that erupted following the granting of 99 acres of land in June to a Hindu religious organisation in India's only Muslim majority province.
Kashmir's separatist movements had remained mostly peaceful until the outbreak of an Islamic insurgency in 1989 that has claimed over 65,000 lives.
