MUMBAI, India --Commandos who stormed the Mumbai headquarters of an ultra-orthodox Jewish group found the bodies of five hostages inside, including a New York rabbi and his wife, officials said, as a fresh battle raged at the luxury Taj Mahal hotel and other Indian forces ended a siege at another five-star hotel....
A delegation from Israel's ZAKA emergency medical services unit entered the building after the raid and reported through an Indian aide that five hostages and two gunmen were dead, a ZAKA spokesman in Israel said. The spokesman had no information on the hostages' identities or whether there were wounded inside.
Jewish law requires the burial of a dead person's entire body, and the mission of the ultra-Orthodox ZAKA volunteers is to rescue the living -- and in the case of the dead, carry out the task of gathering up all collectable pieces of flesh and blood. Numerous local media reports, quoting top military officials, also said five hostages and two gunmen had been killed in the Jewish center.
The airborne assault on the center run by the Jewish outreach group Chabad Lubavitch was punctuated by gunshots and explosions as forces cleared it floor by floor. Late Friday, Rabbi Zalman Schmotkin, a spokesman for the Chabad Lubavitch movement, said that Rabbi Gavriel Noach Holtzberg and his wife, Rivka, were among the dead.
The couple's toddler son, Moshe Holtzberg, was smuggled out of the center by an employee, and is now with his grandparents. By Friday evening, at least nine gunmen had been killed and one had been arrested, said R. Patil, a top official in Maharashtra state, where Mumbai is the capital.
On Friday, India's foreign minister pointed an accusing finger across the border at rival Pakistan. "According to preliminary information, some elements in Pakistan are responsible for Mumbai terror attacks," Pranab Mukherjee told reporters in the western city of Jodhpur. "Proof cannot be disclosed at this time," he said....
Earlier Friday, Pakistan's Defense Minister Ahmed Mukhtar, in Islamabad, denied involvement by his country: "I will say in very categoric terms that Pakistan is not involved in these gory incidents."
Indian home minister Jaiprakash Jaiswal said a captured gunmen had been identified as a Pakistani and Patil, the Maharashtra state official, said: "It is very clear that the terrorists are from Pakistan. We have enough evidence that they are from Pakistan."

The gunmen apparently came to Mumbai by boat, and Indian forces expanded their investigation to the sea. Authorities stopped a cargo ship off the western coast of Gujarat that had sailed from Saudi Arabia and handed it over to police for investigation, said Navy Capt. Manohar Nambiar. They also stopped a cargo ship that had come to Mumbai from Karachi, Pakistan, but released it when nothing suspicious was found on board....

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice spoke by phone yesterday with President-elect Barack Obama for the third time since the attacks began.

"The United States must stand with India and all nations and people who are committed to destroying terrorist networks, and defeating their hate-filled ideology."

The Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston denounced the attacks in a statement yesterday. "We are appalled by the absolute disregard for the value of human life displayed by these senseless acts of terrorism and we categorically condemn those responsible," said Nancy Kaufman, executive director of the council.
Indian intelligence officials said the gunmen who launched the coordinated attack appeared well trained and well prepared. The assailants seemed familiar with the layouts of the two hotels and the Jewish center, giving them a tactical advantage over the police and Indian Army troops sent in to dislodge them.

WASHINGTON - US intelligence and counterterrorism officials said yesterday that there is mounting evidence that a Pakistani militant group based in Kashmir, most likely Lashkar-e-Taiba, is responsible for this week's deadly attacks in Mumbai. The officials cautioned that they have reached no firm conclusions about who was responsible for the attack, or how it was planned and carried out.
But pin it on a Muslim group -- any Muslim group; Americans won't know the difference -- and get it out there anyway!!!
Nevertheless, they said that evidence gathered during the past two days has pointed to a role for Lashkar-e-Taiba or possibly another group based in Kashmir, Jaish-e-Muhammad, which also has a track record of attacks against India....
Indian officials may also be gleaning information from some of the captured militants who participated in the Mumbai attacks. According to one Indian intelligence official, the militants have been using non-Indian cellphones and receiving calls from outside the country during the siege.

Lashkar-e-Taiba denied any responsibility for the terrorist strikes on Thursday. US intelligence agencies have said the group received some training and logistical support in the past from Pakistan's powerful spy service, the Directorate for Inter-Services Intelligence, and that Pakistan's government has long turned a blind eye to Lashkar-e-Taiba camps in the Kashmir region.

Officials in Washington said yesterday that there was no evidence that the Pakistani government had any role in the attacks. But if evidence were to emerge that the operation had been planned and directed from within Pakistan, that would certainly escalate tensions between the bitter nuclear-armed rivals, and could provoke an Indian military response, possibly including strikes against militants' training camps.

NEW YORK - Rabbi Gavriel Noach Holtzberg and his wife, Rivkah, went to Mumbai in 2003 to serve the local Jewish community. The couple ran a synagogue, offering religious instruction and helping people dealing with drug addiction and poverty.
The ultra-orthodox Jewish movement Chabad-Lubavitch, which is based in Brooklyn, confirmed yesterday that the New York rabbi and his wife were among the foreigners killed in the Mumbai terrorist attack. Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, 29, and Rivkah Holtzberg, 28, were killed in the Chabad-Lubavitch offices in Mumbai, Rabbi Zalman Schmotkin said in New York.
The couple's toddler son, Moshe, was rescued by an employee. A second son, who has been ailing, was with relatives in Israel when the attack occurred. A third child had died earlier this year of a genetic disease. The movement has thousands of emissaries around the world, working as rabbis and de facto consuls.
The Holtzbergs were both born in Israel. Gavriel Holtzberg moved to Brooklyn as a child and was raised there. He had dual Israeli-US citizenship; his wife was an Israeli citizen. Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky said Moshe will turn 2 today. "Today, he became an orphan," he said.
The Chabad-Lubavitch movement identified other Americans killed at the Jewish center as Bentzion Chroman, an Israeli with dual US citizenship, and Leibish Teitlebaum, an American from Brooklyn. Members of Chabad-Lubavitch gathered at its New York headquarters yesterday to pray for the families of the dead.
"Gabi and Rivky Holtzberg made the ultimate sacrifice," said Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky, vice chairman of the educational arm of Chabad-Lubavitch. "As emissaries to Mumbai, Gabi and Rivky gave up the comforts of the West in order to spread Jewish pride in a corner of the world that was a frequent stop for throngs of Israeli tourists," he said.
Twelve hours after gunmen stormed the center Wednesday, Sandra Samuel, a cook at the center, heard little Moshe's cries outside the room in which she had barricaded herself. She opened the door, grabbed the toddler, and ran outside.
In Israel, officials said the Chabad center, which is located in the Nariman House on a narrow street of Mumbai, was targeted for being Jewish. "Our world is under attack. There are extremist Muslim elements who do not accept our values or our existence," Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni of Israeli said in Jerusalem.
