NUEVO LAREDO - Texas officials cleared the way yesterday for the execution of Jose Medellin, the first of 51 Mexican nationals on US death row, for his role with five other members of a Houston gang in the 1993 murder and rape of two teenage girls.

The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles, which makes recommendations to Governor Rick Perry of Texas on clemency issues, rejected Medellin's request for an 8-month-reprieve. Medellin, now 33, is scheduled to die by lethal injection at 6 p.m. today at the state prison in Huntsville, Texas. "We are deeply disappointed with this recommendation," said Donald Francis Donovan, one of Medellin's lawyers."We must now rely on the US Supreme Court to prevent Texas from breaking a commitment made by the president and Senate on behalf of the country as a whole." Donovan was referring to a 1963 treaty, the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, that conferred the legal right of criminal suspects arrested in foreign countries to have access to their own country's consular officials. Medellin has contended that he did not have access to a Mexican consular official (San Antonio Express-News)."
I just wonder if the Mexican government would have extradited him or not.
