Computechs to Search for Child Porn

"Maine considers making techs report child porn

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) -- Maine law requires doctors, teachers and commercial film developers to report any form of child abuse or pornography. Now state lawmakers will consider requiring computer technicians to report any child porn they find to law enforcement officials.

State Sen. Bill Diamond of Windham says it makes sense that all professionals should be held to the same standard when it comes to reporting possible abuse.

But the proposal is drawing criticism as an intrusion into innocent people's privacy and a violation of constitutional rights. Shenna Bellows of the Maine Civil Liberties Union says that having computer technicians review people's private contents undermines the Fourth Amendment protections from unreasonable search and seizure."
