WASHINGTON - An emerging network of female leaders who started programs in their own communities, branched out to the national level and then forged bonds with global organizations to provide protection through education, legal counseling, and grants.
Their efforts have helped women and girls around the world counter the effects of sexual violence and other injustices. Through use of counseling, the media, and dance, they have succeeded in societies dominated by men and shaped by cultural and religious sensitivities sometimes at odds with women's rights.
Makoni was in Washington last month to lobby legislators for passage of the International Violence Against Women Act, which aims to integrate US efforts to end gender-based violence into the nation's foreign aid programs. The bill, introduced last year by Senators Joseph Biden, a Delaware Democrat, and Richard Lugar, a Republican from Indiana, would extend into the international arena a 1994 act to combat violence against women in the United States.
The legislation, introduced in the House this spring, seeks to link foreign assistance and diplomacy in about 20 countries, said Paula Dobriansky, undersecretary of state for democracy and global affairs. The bill's other goals include reducing the rate of HIV/AIDS and alleviating poverty.
Kavita Ramdas, head of the Global Fund for Women, a foundation that provides grants to groups advocating in behalf of women's rights:
"It is essential that American legislators look at and be forced to deal with this issue pragmatically as a leading public health problem in the world."
Now 35,000 Zimbabwean girls are in such clubs, part of the Girl Child Network. As a result, Makoni said, boys behave more cautiously, refraining from taunting girls at their first signs of puberty for fear of disciplinary action at school. Her efforts have also helped send men to prison for abuses and exposed crimes of senior officials.
"Polar bears, elephants, and ivory have more preservation rights. The world must reprioritize for women," Makoni said. "If we do not get these girls at a young age, we lose them. Creating a preventative culture is key."Yeah, the animals being more important than women tells you something about the globalist mind-set!
Up until a year or so ago, I would have been all for this kind of stuff; however, knowing what source is pushing such "values" and knowing their wider agenda gives me pause.
