MIAMI - Tomato growers in Florida, California, and Mexico are having trouble selling their crops as US regulators hunt the source of a salmonella outbreak linked to certain tomato varieties, growers said yesterday.
The Food and Drug Administration yesterday added parts of Florida, the number one US tomato producer, to its list of states not associated with the outbreak.
But it was unclear whether the move came in time to salvage $40 million worth of Florida tomatoes that an industry official said were in danger of rotting after picking and packing were halted on Saturday.
"The stuff that should have been harvested over the weekend won't survive more than another day or so. The stuff we have in storage is getting riper every minute, and at some point it will have to be disposed of," said Reggie Brown, executive vice president of the Florida Tomato Growers Exchange.
The FDA warned US consumers Saturday that the outbreak was linked to eating certain raw red plum, red Roma, and red round tomatoes, and products containing those tomatoes.
Major restaurant and grocery chains stopped selling those varieties, and some stopped selling all raw tomatoes.
California was already on the FDA's cleared list, but some supermarkets still rejected tomatoes from that state, which is the number two US producer with $400 million in annual sales.
US growers produced $1.28 billion worth of tomatoes last year, according to the US Department of Agriculture.
Florida produces an annual crop valued at $500 million to $700 million, and supplies more than 90 percent of the nation's tomatoes this time of year, Brown said.

NEW YORK - Counterfeit medicines are on the rise worldwide, as criminals capitalize on the growing use of the Internet by consumers searching for inexpensive drugs.
Seizures of bogus prescription medicines jumped 24 percent to 1,513 incidents in 2007, and illicit versions of 403 different prescription drugs were confiscated in 99 countries, according to the Pharmaceutical Security Institute, a group funded by 26 drug makers.

The $3 billion in counterfeit drugs seized include generic copies that violate patent laws and products that lack active chemical ingredients or contain improper dosages.

In the decade since Internet sites began selling illegal copies of Pfizer Inc.'s erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, counterfeiters have diversified, marketing pills to treat heart disease, arthritis, asthma, AIDS, and cancer, according to the institute, which has been monitoring product seizures since the group was formed in 2002.

Copies of 19 of the world's 25 best-selling drugs were among those seized by industry security, customs agents, and police last year at ports of entry, in free-trade zones or at illicit manufacturing and distribution sites, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

St. John's wort, pine bark extract, and blue-green algae are among commonly used herbal treatments for children with ADHD. They appeal to parents who want to avoid stimulants or other drugs used to help children control their behavior.

In the study, appearing in today's Journal of the American Medical Association, 54 children with ADHD were randomly assigned to take either St. John's wort capsules three times a day or placebos. Participants ranged in age from 6 to 17 years old.
Symptoms were measured at the start of the study and four other times. After eight weeks, the two groups showed no difference in symptoms or side effects.
Adriana Arjona, a 15-year-old diagnosed with ADHD several years earlier, took part in the study in the Seattle area. She has never taken standard prescription medication for the condition because her mother, Aracelly Salazar, believes the potential side effects of nervousness, agitation, and insomnia are worse than her daughter's symptoms.
St. John's wort didn't seem to have much effect, both mother and daughter agreed. The teenager learned after the study ended that she had taken the supplement, not the dummy pill.
The study's results should give pause to parents who have avoided well-researched prescription medicines in favor of herbal remedies, said Dr. Eugenia Chan of Children's Hospital Boston, who was not involved in the new research.
