"Region anticipates a heat wave goodbye " by Matt Collette, Globe Correspondent | June 11, 2008
Temperatures across Massachusetts soared above 90 degrees for the fourth straight day yesterday, breaking records in some areas, but a cold front is expected to help the region cool off today.
While a sea breeze stopped the heat from breaking records yesterday in Boston, National Weather Service meteorologist Alan Dunham said the high of 94 degrees in Worcester was three degrees hotter than a 1984 record. The mercury hit 96 degrees in Providence, two degrees above a 1974 record.
Temperatures should max out in Boston at 88 today, according to the National Weather Service.
But yesterday in Massachusetts, heat forced early dismissal or outright closing of some buildings without air conditioning. All 8,000 public school students in Taunton were dismissed early, something that hasn't happened in more than 20 years, said Superintendent Arthur Stellar.
I can hear the kids all the way here: Yaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!
Fall River elementary and middle schools, which do not have air conditioning, were dismissed at 10:30 a.m. Arlington Superintendent Nate Levenson told parents yesterday morning that their children's attendance was optional.
The main branch of the Somerville Public Library was closed because the cooling system was broken and temperatures in the second floor reading room passed 90 degrees, library director Nancy Milnor said. The city's other two library branches stayed open and saw more visitors than usual.
Ozone levels in Boston were higher than normal, said Joe Ferson, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Department of Education. Winds from the southwest brought even more ozone to the region, Ferson said.
The higher ozone levels made breathing difficult for some, especially children under 12, the elderly, and people with respiratory illnesses, Ferson said.
But that is POLLUTION, NOT GLOBAL WARMING!!!
See how they conflate and confuse?
But a spokeswoman for Massachusetts General Hospital said administrators had noticed no weather-related uptick in serious health problems.
So it wasn't THAT HOT, was it (pffffffft -- whoops, sorry)!!!?
Fortunately, relief is on the way, Ferson said. "There's a cold front coming in" today, he said. "I know that's welcome news."
At Boston's City Hall Plaza, thousands came out for the annual Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl fund-raiser, which runs through tomorrow. There was a noticeable bump in turnout about 5 p.m. when many were leaving work, said Elizabeth Chernack, a Jimmy Fund spokeswoman.
"The first day is usually a slower day, but we really did not see that this year," Chernack said.
Oh, so global warming is GOOD for the ICE CREAM BUSINESS, huh?
Public health advisories caution people to limit strenuous activities during a heat wave, and Milnor urged those looking for relief to curl up with a book. "Something that has to do with snow, or a winter setting," she said. "Maybe a Russian novel, set in Siberia."
Yeah, right, go to the library and read a book! You living in AmeriKa, lady?
Ever hear of an X-Box?
Snow Job

Good way to cool off anyway. Think the mom was ticked off?
Bet the kid thought it was fun...
"For most overheated New Englanders, snow was the last thing on their mind yesterday. But a group of motorists at a Dedham gas station got a strong reminder of the white stuff when the station's fire extinguishing system accidentally went off.
"It looks like white powder, and it just smothers you," said Steve MacDonald, spokesman for the Boston Fire Department. "The idea is that it comes down very quickly and forcefully."
The extinguishing system went off and blanketed the the King Petroleum gas station just after 1 p.m., he said. The station is on the border of Dedham and West Roxbury, so both the Boston and Dedham fire departments responded.
It was unclear yesterday why the extinguishing system activated, but it could have been a mechanical error, human error, or even the heat, MacDonald said.
"Could be the heat, that could have affected the link that keeps it in place," he said.
WTF? These things could start going off like roadside bombs?
The extinguishing agent is based on baking soda and is not hazardous, but can be irritating for people with respiratory problems, MacDonald said.
And in this heat (cough-cough)?
There were nine people and six vehicles at the station, he said. Six people were decontaminated at the scene, and three went to a hospital, MacDonald said.
I don't know about you, but I'm smelling LAW SUIT (cough-cough)!
They were put in jumpsuits, so the powder did not spread inside the ambulance.
Yeah, don't get the ambulance dirty -- who cares if you can fucking breathe?!
"Five cars and a van, they were just at the pumps, pumping gas, minding their own business," MacDonald said.
The six vehicles will have to stay at the station until they can be cleaned by a company specializing in hazardous materials decontamination, which could take some time, MacDonald said. Officials had no estimate for when the station will reopen.
I thought you guys said above it was "not hazardous?"
Can you please not LIE in the SAME STORY at least?
Gee-zuss!!!!
And do you find it strange the web cut this:
"Right now it's a big inconvenience to the people who didn't want to go to the hospital, but whose cars are here," he said."
Yeah, it's like the fuel protest across the oceans.
You don't want the Amurkn people to know how pissed everyone else is, and wouldn't want to give them any (protest) ideas, would you, shit-kicking MSM?!
How PISSED would you be if you COULDN'T GET YOUR CAR, readers?
