Britain faces threat of dirty bomb attack at Christmas, Home Secretary warns
"Britain faces an increased threat of a "dirty bomb" attack over the Christmas period, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith warned today.
She said the security forces were taking "very seriously" the risk of a possible terrorist attack using radioactive or chemical agents.
Her warning came as police in Slovakia arrested three people this week for trying to sell enriched uranium.
The Slovak authorities said the material was sufficiently enriched to be used in a "dirty bomb" terrorist attack.
Questioned about the find, Ms Smith told Sky News: "If you look at the nature of the sort of attacks that have either been carried out or have been foiled, we are talking about attacks on crowded public places.
"We are talking about the use potentially of dirty bombs and other things and that is why it is something that we need to take seriously."
This summer's foiled attacks in London and Glasgow were a "graphic illustration" of the type of danger facing the country, she said.
She warned that recent intelligence analysis indicated the number of terrorist plots was likely to grow over the next few months.
