"Loss of Tax Data Rocks British Government" by JOHN F. BURNS
LONDON, Nov. 23 — The uproar over the British tax agency’s loss of computer disks with personal and financial information on about 25 million Britons has rocked the five-month-old government of Prime Minister Gordon Brown, raising new questions about its competence and ability to withstand the challenge of a resurgent Conservative Party.
Opinion polls taken after the government on Wednesday announced the loss of the computer data suggested slumping support for Mr. Brown and the government.
A poll conducted online for Channel Four television showed the Conservatives leading his Labor Party by a substantial margin, and another online poll, for The Times of London, showed that confidence in Mr. Brown’s competence as prime minister had fallen.
So strap yourselves in, Brits, for a "terror scare" real soon!
Mr. Brown’s case was not helped by England’s loss in a major soccer match at midweek that meant that England, home of the modern form of the game, had failed to qualify for next summer’s European championship.
Pffffft!! Like the fucking soccer match has anything to do with this!!
What garbage journalism, hey!!!
That's like sayinfg Bush's popularity went down because the Dallas Cowboys didn't make the Super Bowl!
How inane and ridiculous!! Who wrote this?
The computer disks’ disappearance has been the biggest blow. On Wednesday, the Conservatives’ leader, David Cameron, seemed to unsettle Mr. Brown, who had said the missing disks were the result of an error by a junior official, not of government policy.
Mr. Cameron asked Mr. Brown in Parliament: “Do you know what people want from the prime minister in days like this? It is for him to stand up, show some broad shoulders, be a big man, and take some responsibility.”
"Hey, MI5, activate the "terror" cells for another attack. I sure need one" -- Prime Minister Brown
CUI BONO, readers?
The unencrypted disks, carrying bank account details and addresses for 7.5 million families claiming monthly child benefits, were lost after the tax agency’s headquarters dispatched them by mail courier to an audit office. A 10-day police search has so far failed to find the disks.
But they need to be able to crawl up your ass at anytime, right? Pffft!
Along with Mr. Brown’s apology in Parliament for the “inconvenience and worries caused to millions of people,” and the resignation of the tax agency’s top official, the government has said there is no sign the disks have fallen into criminal hands. Still, it has offered no explanation about what happened. Nor has it rebutted Conservative claims, based on leaked government e-mail messages, that a senior tax agency official knew of the plan to send the disks by mail.
Mr. Brown’s standing has been further battered by the gloomy outlook for the Northern Rock bank, a major mortgage lender that in September endured the first run on any British bank since the 1830s, and avoided collapse by the injection of more than $47 billion in government loans.
Gee, kind of a BAD TIME to GET the JOB, huh?
What an ASSHOLE BLIAR WAS!
Look at the mess he left you, Gordo!
In Parliament on Monday, the government seemed to back away from assurances that taxpayers’ money would be recovered in full. The statement spurred concern that the government guarantee of Northern Rock’s deposits, and fading hopes that the bank would find a buyer, could lead to eventual taxpayer losses of $100 billion or more, potentially the worst blow of its kind to any British government in decades.
Yeah, Brown DEFINITELY NEEDS a FALSE-FLAG "TERROR" EVENT!!!!
Expect one SOON, Britian!!!!
Further pressure came from an attack on Mr. Brown by five former British armed forces chiefs. In the House of Lords on Thursday, the retired officers accused the government of prolonged underfinancing of the 175,000-member military, which has lost more than 240 soldiers killed in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Adm. Lord Boyce, who was military chief during the 2003 Iraq invasion, accused Mr. Brown of “contempt” for the forces.
Gee, that's never good for a head-of-state!
Maybe Brown is on the way out, huh?
“The government is getting a bit of a reputation for being accident-prone, and they’ve got to sort this out,” said Sunder Katwala, 33, an Oxford graduate who is general secretary of the Fabian Society, a center-left group that strongly supported Mr. Brown’s rise to the prime ministership.
Mr. Katwala said that when Mr. Brown succeeded Mr. Blair in June, “his reputation for competence played very strongly for Brown, and everybody said he was master of all he surveyed.” But, Mr. Katwala continued, “now, he’s being battered by events, and he needs to get back on the front foot."
And what better way to do that than STAGE a "TERROR EVENT?"
