Ron Paul Update

Never got to him yesterday because I spent so much time on the War Dailies.

"'View' hosts grill Paul on abortion

Ron Paul defended his anti-abortion stance during an intense grilling from the women hosting "The View" Tuesday, acknowledging that he was unlikely to convince the pro-choice women of his position and that it would be virtually impossible to completely outlaw the procedure nationally.

"I don't think we're ever going to reach a stage where there will no abortions," Paul said. The Texas congressman, whose long-shot bid for the Republican nomination is gaining steam, said he would like to see Roe v. Wade overturned. But Paul said state governments should be able to decide for themselves how to regulate abortion. "But I want to sort this out the way the constitution mandates, and that is at the local level."

Paul, a former OB-GYN, said his anti-abortion position was based on his view that a fetus was a human being with the same rights as any other person. Just as he advocated personal privacy that would not give people the right's to commit murder, he did not view a woman's claim to her own body as superior to the fetus's right to life.

"It's a legal position because I honor and respect the rights of the mother. But your home too; your home is your castle," Paul said. "I don't want any government in your home: no searches without warrants, no cameras. But you can't kill your baby in your home."

The hosts spent several minutes discussing Paul's abortion position, although they spent virtually no time on the libertarian lawmaker's fierce opposition to the war in Iraq and his calls for limiting American intervention abroad, which have garnered him substantial support online.

Paul is the first candidate to appear on the popular daytime talk show since a writers strike began last month. Democratic candidates have said they would not cross picket lines to appear on The View while the strike persists; a CBS-sponsored debate could also be canceled because of Democrats refusals to participate if that network's news writers call a strike.

On Tuesday's show, Paul -- a proponent of returning to the gold standard -- said the dollar's ongoing loss of value is "one of the most serious threats we're facing today."

Paul was visibly agitated when co-host Joy Behar told him, "you probably are not going to win and you know that," then asked who among the Republicans he would be willing to vote for.

"You want those pro-war people to win?" Paul asked. "No, you don't. ... If they come around endorsing my anti-war views, and pro-free-markets and sound money, yeah I would consider it, but I don't have anybody now that I could vote for."

So can you vote for him now, ladies?

He is not going to take away your abortion rights!

He is not the extremist the MSM is trying to make him out to be!

Wake up, America! This MSM is LYING TO YOU EVERYDAY!!!

They are PUSHING an AGENDA, that's all!

And the AmeriKan public thinks they are getting news!

Actually, I did watch Ron on the view, and it was a set-up hit job!!!

Thank God
Dr. Paul can think on his feet and handle questions like he does!

That's why the man is qualified to be president -- the right policies, the right demeanor, the proper integrity and the REAL DEAL!

Ron Paul is who he is!

He doesn't have to put on a political face to suck up to a crowd.

In fact, he won't!

And how about Ellen DeGeneres, huh?

First she cries over a dog on tv (never mind the wars or anything), then she crosses the picket line of the writers, and
NOW THIS!

Anyhow, back to

I came across this great article today and couldn't agree more with the sentiment -- except that I'm not a huge Lou Dobbs fan. Unlike the author, Isabel Lyman, I would actually listen to Rush Limbaugh than Lou Dobbs. Yes, Lou Dobbs is right on immigration, but his overt populism creeps me out. Rush is wrong on the war and a few other things, but he is generally highly entertaining, and far more thoughtful than his critics give him credit for. Here is what Isabel Lyman had to say in Taki's Top Drawer:

In fact, in the last century, right-wing types had a simple way of describing patriotic congressional representatives like Ron Paul, who championed limited federal government, believed in natural rights, respected the oath they swore to uphold, and eschewed Wilsonian-style foreign policy. We used to call them "conservatives."

You may be familiar with Taki from his founding of The American Conservative with Pat Buchanan as well as his connection to some Objectivist circles. If you haven't already checked it out, The American Conservative offers conservative analysis (opposed to neoconservative analysis, such as what is published in National Review and The Weekly Standard).

Once upon a time, National Review could be counted on for reasonably conservative/libertarian (of the small-l variety) viewpoints. You can still find a few voices of reason in its pages, but it is getting frighteningly more and more neocon.

And The Weekly Standard? I love Fred Barnes, but the rest of them have got to go. They are just way too hesitant to be constructively critical of the Bush administration. Reason magazine is good, but it's not quite filling the void, especially for for those of us who are pro-life (as the vast majority of actual conservatives are). I feel there is room for a new magazine for the revolutionaries who are Ron Paul supporters -- i.e., those of us who used to be called conservative.

I joined the Army in the early months of 2001; my patriotism led me to the recruiter’s office. I had grown up in awe of my grandfathers and their stories of World War II, and their reminiscing became my dreams. When I got to basic training I did not talk about missing home like the other recruits around me, I felt at home in ways I never had before.

The weeks after 9/11 found me in Kosovo, part of C co 3/7 Infantry, 3rd Infantry Division, patrolling the border with Macedonia as part of our duties. We had ammunition to defend ourselves with and the authority to apprehend anyone crossing the border illegally. I will get back to why these details are important later.

Fast forward to 2003, I am rolling across the desert in the back of a Bradley fighting vehicle, part of the spearhead into Iraq. Other than those first three weeks of “Shock and Awe” what I remember most about Iraq was the people. Crowds of kids wanting to know about Michael Jackson and Britney Spears, open-minded adults wanted to know about our social freedoms, and ninety some percent of Iraqis just wanted to raise their families in peace and did not hesitate to tell us. I really fell in love with the Iraqi people. My platoon and I played soccer with some of those crowds of kids, we had dinner and shared food with families in their homes, we even went to a few house parties, and my lieutenant and I spent one very memorable afternoon swimming in an irrigation ditch with five young women. It is all of them I think of when anyone tells me we need to turn the Middle East into a sheet of glass or that all Muslims are our enemies.

I remember thinking on this briefly when I was there, but more so since I’ve returned, usually when I’m day dreaming behind the wheel of my van, but what we were doing when we were doing our jobs, patrolling the streets, conducting road blocks, vehicle searches, bodily searching individuals, and searching houses, couldn’t be helping our long range plans for winning hearts and minds. I really have to wonder, how long would it take me to move from a position of thanks for my despotic government being removed, to feeling like I lived in a conquered and occupied country if I saw foreign troops on the streets of my hometown Tallahassee everyday? Add to this our having bases and troops in Turkey, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Egypt, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, and Saudi Arabia, ( I may have missed a few, we have approximately 700 bases in 130 countries ) some of them for decades, our Navy of their coast, our fighter jets in their sky’s , the CIA in business with monarchs, dictators and thugs, and our State Department treating their leaders like irresponsible children, it’s no wonder moderate Muslims takes to the streets shouting “ Death to America” and a minority takes action against us. I would expect we would be doing the same thing if say, China had bases on our soil, and her Navy patrolled our coastline and Chinese fighter jets streaked across our sky. In short, this is all hard to admit, but our actions do have consequences.

Fast forward again to the present day, I am out of active duty, and in the Army Reserves. (I wanted to stay active duty, but my wife said I would be single, so we had a compromise.) To be honest the reserves has bored me to tears and I haven’t felt like I’m giving anything back to my country, so I looked into getting attached to a National Guard unit on our border with Mexico for a tour or two. However, when I learned they don’t have the authority to apprehend illegal border crossers and can only call up our overworked and over-stretched border patrol when they spot illegal activity, I got myself in trouble again by thinking - about what I had done in Kosovo and about what I knew our military had done to our own people in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina (disarmed law abiding civilians only trying to protect themselves when the police had failed to do so).

To add insult to injury, our Guardsmen and women on our own border don’t have ammunition and have on several documented occasions actually had to retreat when facing fire from Mexican paramilitary groups. Now why would I want to sign up for that? To be witness to the violation of America’s sovereignty? No one in the Executive branch of our government is doing anything about it, and it makes me wonder why I am even in the Army at all.

Why are we the world's policeman when our own country is being openly violated? Why are we borrowing money hand over fist from nations not exactly our friends, just to spend it on our out-of-control foreign policy? I am starting to feel like the powers that be do not have America’s interests in mind at all. It’s starting to feel like our ruin is their objective. From our factories closing and moving overseas, to the plunging value of our dollar, America is crumbling. Yet I love her far to much to watch her fall apart.

This is why I am taking my personal revolution and joining forces with Dr. Ron Paul’s revolution. His “bring all the troops home” non-intervention foreign policy and plans to put America first again are just what we need at this time in our history. I don’t expect you to agree with everything he says, but I do hope we can all put our differences aside and join him in seeing that ALL the troops come home, the Republic is restored and America saved.

Thank you and God Bless.

And this blogger asks and answers a good question: Why Ron Paul now?

A rEVOLution: Why Now?

"
Geoffrey Pike

Tuesday December 4, 2007

The Ron Paul revolution has come about quickly in less than a year’s time. It has surprised nearly everyone, including Congressman Paul himself. Libertarians are accustomed to seeing the same typical Republicans and Democrats running each election cycle, while the Libertarian Party presidential candidate gets less than 1% of the vote with no hopes of winning. So why all of a sudden is Ron Paul having so much success?

In many ways, there is a bit of a perfect storm brewing. Ron Paul is the only member of Congress with a strong libertarian philosophy and he obviously has the experience of running campaigns. By running as a Republican, he is able to accomplish more since the whole system has been rigged against third-party candidates. The most important aspect of his run as a Republican is his presence in the debates, which has exposed a whole new audience to the message of freedom and small government.

In addition to all of this, there is a high resentment towards politicians these days. The current president’s approval ratings are low and the Congress (controlled by Democrats) has even lower approval ratings. There is also a very unpopular war being fought, which neither side has the willingness to end.

There was a similar environment in the 1970’s with a war that was even more unpopular because of the draft. There were also the disasters of the Johnson and Nixon administrations. Although there was revolution in the air at that time, it seemed to be dominated by socialists. There was certainly an anti-war revolt, but it was coupled with calls for bigger government at home.

Another major factor in the whole success of the Ron Paul revolution is of course the internet. It is hard to say how successful the Paul campaign would have been without the internet, but most could safely assume that it would have been much more difficult for people to organize.

There is another link in the whole rEVOLution that often gets ignored. The libertarian base has finally developed enough to have a revolution. The internet is great. Having an unpopular president and Congress have certainly helped. Having a man like Ron Paul, running as a Republican, has been critical. But all of this would not be possible if the ideas of liberty had not been planted in people’s heads prior to this.

When Harry Browne ran for president on the Libertarian Party ticket in 1996 and 2000, he knew and admitted that he had no chance to win. The purpose of his campaigns was not to win. He continually stated that his main purpose was to educate people and recruit and grow the libertarian base for the future. He understood that you could not wave a magic wand and create liberty without the hard work of convincing our fellow humans of the great benefits of liberty.

Thanks to the work of Harry Browne, many of the writers and readers of LewRockwell.com, Ron Paul himself, and so many others, we are now in a position to make gains for our side.

Every year, it seems the government gets bigger and more powerful, while a minor setback for the government is seen as a rare accomplishment for libertarians. It seems that libertarians can’t do anything to cut the government. It is a lot of work just trying to slow down its growth.

Now we see more hope than ever. We see that maybe it will be possible in the future to make significant gains for freedom. And it is due to the hard work and determination of past libertarians that fought on, even though progress could rarely be visibly seen.

Some Ron Paul supporters think this is the last chance to save our country and our freedom. While possible, it is not likely. This revolution should actually give renewed hope, as a whole new generation of libertarians is growing exponentially. Even if Ron Paul does not win the Republican nomination, this past year has been an enormous success.

In the past, we libertarians have heard from many, particularly Republicans, that the only way to reduce the state is in baby steps. In other words, we can’t be too radical in what we advocate or it will turn people away. The people that said this and continue to say this have it completely wrong. It is the radical libertarian base that has stayed consistent and on message and has done far more to help the cause of liberty than anyone else.

As the number of radical libertarians increase (which has happened quickly due to Ron Paul and the internet), the quicker it will be that the state falls. It would be nice if Ron Paul were to become president in 2009. It would speed up our agenda into light speed. But even if Ron Paul doesn’t win the nomination, his campaign has helped recruit radical libertarians that can now help educate other people on the benefits of liberty.

Let’s thank Congressman Paul for his past work and now for leading our rEVOLution. Let’s also not forget about all of the people prior to this that never gave up hope and set the stage for where we are today.

He is more hopeful than I am.

I see the crushing power of state totalitariansim being applied before we achieve final victory!

But the author is right!

Freedom and Liberty will win out over Tyranny!

We may not be around to see it, but by the grace of God, it will be achieved!
