JERUSALEM - Condoleezza Rice criticized Israel yesterday for planning to build new homes on occupied land in the Jerusalem area.
Gee, first the NIE and now this. Israel must be pissed!
The secretary of state, in rare public censure of Washington's closest ally in the Middle East, at a news conference at NATO in Brussels after she had met Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni of Israel:
"We are in a time when the goal is to build maximum confidence with the parties and this doesn't help to build confidence. There should not be anything which might prejudge final-status negotiations. It's even more important now that we are on the eve of the beginning of the negotiations. I made that position clear."
Actually sounds rather tepid, doesn't it?

BRUSSELS, Dec. 7 (Reuters) — United States Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice warned Israel on Friday that its plan to build 300 housing units on land captured in the 1967 war threatened American-backed efforts to reach peace with the Palestinians.
Rice, on the sidelines of a NATO meeting, in a rare United States criticism of Israel:
“We are in a time when the goal is to build maximum confidence with the parties and this doesn’t help to build confidence.”

Israel Snubs Settlement Criticism
"An Israeli minister has rebuffed recent US criticism of Israel's plan to build new homes on occupied land in the Jerusalem area.
Responding to the rare public US censure, Zeev Boim, Israel's construction and housing minister, reiterated Israel's position that it can build anywhere in Jerusalem - including the Arab east sector.
Boim said the controversial project, known to Israelis as Har Homa and to Palestinians as Abu Ghneim:
"[It] is within Jerusalem's municipal borders, where Israeli law applies. There is thus nothing to prevent the construction there, just as there is nothing to prevent construction anywhere else in Israel."
Israel's annexation of East Jerusalem and integrating the surrounding West Bank areas within much expanded Jerusalem city limits is not recognised internationally. Israel has settled Jews on much of that land, effectively isolating East Jerusalem.
Nabil Abu Rdainah, a Palestinian presidential aide:
"[The Americans] must pressure the Israeli government to stop settlement activities."
