Bomb Explodes in Pakistan, Killing Woman Carrying It
"A woman who the police said was a suicide bomber was blown up in an explosion in a high security military cantonment here on Tuesday , police and security officials said.
It was unclear whether she was a suicide bomber or whether she was carrying a bomb to plant it somewhere. If she was a suicide bomber, it would be the first case of an attack of that kind carried out by a woman in Pakistan.
A spate of suicide bombings across the country has jolted Pakistan in recent months. It was one of the reasons cited by President Pervez Musharraf to impose a state of emergency on Nov. 3.
The explosion on Tuesday occurred in the Peshawar cantonment, where a woman dressed in a traditional Afghan blue burqa approached a military checkpoint and was asked by security personnel to stop, Javed Iqbal Cheema, an Interior Ministry spokesman, said at a news briefing in Islamabad.
There were no other casualties, and there were no claims of responsibility for the attack.
While Mr. Cheema described the episode as the first suicide bombing by a woman in the country, the circumstances of the explosion raised some questions.
The upper part of the woman’s body was intact, unlike in most suicide bombings. Only her limbs were blown up.
Also, a security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity:
“The woman was hardly 20 meters away from the guards. Had this been a suicide bombing, there would definitely have been ball bearings or pellets packed in the explosive vests, which would have hit the guards and killed them. But there was no sign of any such thing.”
Citing information from the guards at the scene, the security official also said the woman appeared to have been carrying something in her hand under her burqa. He said that indicated that she probably wanted to plant the bomb somewhere, but it went off prematurely.
Efforts were being made to check the woman’s fingerprints, the security official said, adding that her burqa, facial features and two braids were more characteristic of an Afghan woman than a local one.
The chief of police in Peshawar, Tanveerul Haq Sipra, also described the explosion as a suicide bombing. “We have found pieces of the belt used in the bombing, which shows that she was a suicide bomber,” he said."
