"Children Hurt in Pakistan Bombing" by DAVID ROHDE

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Dec. 10 — A suicide bomb attack on a military truck carrying schoolchildren outside a Pakistani Air Force base in northwestern Pakistan wounded five children and two adults early on Monday, military officials said. The attack came a day after a suicide bombing in northwestern Pakistan killed six civilians and a police officer.

Over the weekend, Pakistani military officials claimed victory over militants in the Swat Valley, a famed tourist area in northwestern Pakistan. After months of failing to act as small groups of militants seized control of lightly armed police posts and declared a harsh brand of Islamic law, more than 20,000 heavily armed Pakistani troops moved into the valley late last month.

The military officials said over the weekend that they had successfully driven militants from several main towns, killed 290 insurgents and captured 143. But they have failed to capture Maulana Fazlullah, the young cleric leading fighters in the area, who is believed to have fled into the nearby mountains.

Foreign militants who have seized control of parts of Pakistan’s tribal areas, a nearby region that lies on the border with Afghanistan, are believed to have aided local militants in Swat.

Pakistani military officials said the suicide bombing on Monday could be in retaliation for the offensive. “There is resistance,” said Lt. Col. Baseer Haider, a military spokesman.

Colonel Haider said an unidentified person rammed a car laden with explosives into a military truck carrying schoolchildren at 7:30 a.m. near an air force base in Kamra, about 40 miles northwest of Islamabad. It is common in Pakistan for children who attend military schools to be transported in military vehicles.

A police official in the nearby town of Attock said the bus was carrying the children of air force employees who worked at the base, Agence France-Presse reported. Pakistani television stations showed images of police officers inspecting the charred remains of a car and a badly damaged military truck on a road outside the base.

Sunday’s suicide bombing occurred in the Swat Valley, the scene of the recent fighting, military officials said. In that attack, a suicide bomber drove a car bomb into a police checkpoint, killing six civilians and a police officer.

Suicide attacks have increased in Pakistan this year, killing hundreds of people. Militants are strongest in the country’s northwest, where they have seized large amounts of territory."
