JERUSALEM — Israeli and Palestinian negotiators on Wednesday held their first meeting in what was supposed to begin a final peace process as envisioned by the American-sponsored conference in Annapolis, Md., last month, but the talks were marred by conflicting agendas and overshadowed by a sharp escalation of hostilities in and around the Gaza Strip.
The only agreement was to meet again after the Muslim Id al-Adha holiday, which begins next week, officials on both sides said. In the hours before the meeting, Palestinian militants fired a barrage of rockets and mortar shells into Israel from Gaza. The attack was seen as a response to a broad Israeli Army operation in the south of Gaza on Tuesday, which left at least six Palestinian militants dead.
Of the 17 rockets and four mortar shells that were launched, several fell inside Israeli territory, according to an army spokeswoman. One woman was slightly wounded by shrapnel after a rocket landed in the Israeli border town of Sderot.
Sderot’s mayor, Eli Moyal, announced his resignation during a live interview on Israel Radio on Wednesday over what he called government inaction against the rocket attacks.
Israel had intended to discuss procedural issues at Wednesday’s meeting. Instead, the Palestinians “had other plans, to use the meeting as a platform to air their grievances,” an Israeli official said.
