"Clerics seek cease-fire in Pakistan tribal region where rocket attack sparked gunbattle" by Monday, August 6, 2007

"
Muslim clerics were trying Monday to broker a cease-fire between pro-Taliban militants and Pakistani security forces in restive North Waziristan, where a military post came under rocket attack overnight, sparking a gunbattle, officials said.

There were no reports of casualties in Monday's gunbattle, but over the weekend, a bombing at a bus station and fighting left at least 24 people dead in the frontier region.

On Monday, a remote-controlled bomb exploded near a car carrying an air force officer on the outskirts of the city of Peshawar, wounding him, his son and driver, said Salim Khan, a police officer. He said authorities were investigating who was behind the attack.

The Pakistan Air Force gave a different account. It said in a statement that a "fire cracker" placed at the roadside had slightly damaged a bus and that three air force personnel had suffered minor injuries.

Meanwhile, militants distributed pamphlets in the bazaars of Miran Shah on Monday, expressing hatred of Pakistani security forces.

Titled "Taliban's message to a missile," the pamphlet, written in Pakistan's main Urdu language, blamed army and paramilitary troops for "spilling the blood of Muslims."

"Go and explode on the head of a soldier or a spy. See, make no mistake, go straight and target the enemies of Islam, the dogs of army and paramilitary," it said."
