On Saturday, a senior US official said that an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal would depend on whether Abbas was able to resume authority over Gaza -- the smaller half of the Palestinians' promised state.
"I don't think in the long term that an agreement is going to work if Hamas continues to control Gaza," the official told reporters on condition of anonymity. "That's why we repeatedly said that the Palestinian Authority should resume its responsibility for the government in Gaza as well."

"Israel Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told a parliamentary committee that peace with Iran is impossible and that military actions against the Islamic state was legitimate.
Olmert told the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Israeli rejects ruling out any options, including tactical nuclear strikes, against Iran.
The statement came even after Iran agreed to answer questions about the country's nuclear activities within 30 day at a meeting between Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Mohamed ElBaradei.

"Israel will never allow Iran to have nuclear weapons," Olmert told the committee. "As such, any and all actions Israel takes will be legitimate in this context."
Olmert hinted that surgical air strikes similar to the ones carried out against Iraq in 1981, and Syria last year, would be the first choice.
But if that does not succeed in disarming Iran, Israel was prepared to use more force, including nuclear weapons, Olmert said.
President Bush's statement on Iran had opened a "window of opportunity for us to act and eliminate this danger," Olmert told his cabinet on Sunday.
"I am encouraged by the United States' position on Iran under the helm of George Bush, especially on this issue," Olmert told reporters at a join press conference with the American President last week.
The Israeli leaders sentiments were echoed by Sallai Meridor, Israel's ambassador to the United States, who said that Bush and Olmert saw eye to eye over the growing threat Iran posed and keeping all military options open."

Israel won't accept nuke weapons in Iran

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told a powerful parliamentary panel on Monday that Israel rejects "no options" to block Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, a meeting participant said.
The statement was the Israeli leader's clearest indication yet that he is willing to use military force against Iran.
"Israel clearly will not reconcile itself to a nuclear Iran," the meeting participant quoted Olmert as telling the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. "All options that prevent Iran from gaining nuclear capabilities are legitimate within the context of how to grapple with this matter."
Israel did not sign Non-Proliferation Treaty and has violated the number of U.N. resolutions in the past. Iran has said it abide by the NPT on exact terms. U.S. also signed NPT, which it must be obliged to honor per the Constitutional decree.

The meeting participant spoke on condition of anonymity because the session was closed.
Olmert addressed the panel days after discussing Iran's nuclear ambitions in talks with President Bush in Jerusalem.
During that visit, Israeli officials disputed the recently released conclusions of a U.S. National Intelligence Estimate that concluded Iran halted its nuclear weapons program in 2003.
In Jerusalem, Bush declared that Iran remained "a threat to world peace," but reasserted his commitment to trying to resolve the standoff over Iran's nuclear program diplomatically.
Israel, which sent warplanes in 1981 to demolish an unfinished nuclear reactor in Iraq, advocates a diplomatic solution to the Iranian standoff as well.
