KARACHI - Authorities yesterday announced the arrest of a 15-year-old boy in connection with the plot to assassinate Benazir Bhutto. They also seized other alleged militants they said were planning to attack a religious celebration of minority Shi'ite Muslims.
Provincial officials in Pakistan's border region said yesterday that the teenager, who was captured near the Afghan border, reportedly told investigators that he would have been the next suicide bomber had Bhutto survived her killing on Dec. 27.
Information provided by the boy led yesterday to the arrest of five other suspects who officials said were prospective suicide bombers, including an 11-year-old boy. An official who asked not to be named said the others were not believed to have been involved in the conspiracy to kill Bhutto.

A senior intelligence official in North West Frontier Province said the 15-year-old suspect in the Bhutto plot told investigators that a five-person assassination squad was dispatched to Rawalpindi by Baitullah Mehsud, a militant tribal leader with strong ties to Al Qaeda and an alliance with the Taliban, the Associated Press reported.

Separately, five more suspected militants were arrested in Karachi late Friday amid fears of sectarian violence that often flares during Ashoura, officials said.

Maulvi Mohammed Umar, a purported spokesman for Mehsud, yesterday again dismissed the government's charge that the tribal leader organized the attack on Bhutto. "It is just government propaganda . . . we have already clarified that we are not involved in the attack on Benazir Bhutto."

On Thursday, in the border city of Peshawar, a teenage suicide bomber blew himself up, killing nine and wounding 25 others in a crowded Shi'ite Muslim prayer hall.
