Story Iraq: A Tale of Two Countries

At least the slums were standing under Saddam.

And they had running water and food.

Oh, well, THAT'S Bush's
LIBERATION!

"Sunni chiefs critical of Qaeda attacked; Iraqi local leaders standing against group face risks" by Sally Buzbee/Associated Press August 12, 2007

BAGHDAD -- A powerful roadside bomb killed the governor and police chief of a southern province... the flurry of attacks... militants bombed the northern Baghdad home of a moderate and highly regarded Sunni cleric, Sheik Wathiq al-Obeidi.... He was seriously wounded and three relatives were killed.

A local tribal leader in Albu Khalifa, a village west of Baghdad, was gunned down by militants who broke into his home late yesterday.

[Could militants and gunmen = BLACKWATERS?!]

At least 33 people were killed or found dead nationwide, including a police officer and a woman who were struck by separate roadside bombs in northern Iraq.

[At least 33, and likely a whole lot more!]

US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales was in Iraq to meet with Justice Department officials helping to overhaul the country's legal system.

[WTF would he know about that?

Saddam's justice system would be have been better!

Good God, the stink of hypocrisy!]

In the south, the bomb that killed the governor and police chief struck in Qadisiyah Province as the two traveled back to the capital of Diwaniyah from a funeral.

The governor, Khalil Jalil Hamza, and the police chief, Major General Khalid Hassan, were killed along with their driver and a bodyguard."

How about the Times? Any better?

"Road Bomb in Iraq Kills 5, Including a Governor" by RICHARD A. OPPEL Jr. and ABDUL RAZZAQ al-SAIEDI

BAGHDAD, Aug. 11 — The governor and police chief of Qadisiya Province were killed in a roadside bomb attack on Saturday afternoon.... There was no immediate indication who was behind the blast, which struck an American-made sport utility vehicle carrying the governor, Khalil Jalil Hamza, and the provincial police chief, Maj. Gen. Khalid Hassan, near the village of Afak, 20 miles east of Diwaniya. The late afternoon attack came as the two men drove to the funeral of a prominent Shiite tribal sheik in Afak.... It also killed three guards and wounded three others in the convoy.

Mahdi fighters are a large and popular presence in the province, whose impoverished inhabitants mostly try to eke out a living growing aromatic ambar rice in the marshy fields.

For months the Iraqi Army and American forces have been fighting to suppress the Mahdi Army and other Shiite fighters in the province. Those operations have brought denunciations from Sadrist officials who accused the governor of using American and Iraqi troops to pursue those loyal to Mr. Sadr.

In the province’s Mahdi Army strongholds there has been an outpouring of rage at the governor. The concrete walls that enclose many homes and buildings have been sprayed with slogans like “Death to the Traitor Governor!” or painted with caricatures likening the governor to a dog.

The assassination occurred as conflicting accounts emerged north of Baghdad about an American airstrike on Thursday afternoon. According to an Iraqi police official in Samarra, an American helicopter fired a rocket and killed eight Iraqi workers as they drove to fix electricity transmission lines south of the city. Two others were wounded, the official said.

[Oh, a HELICOPTER STRIKE! More INNOCENTS SLAUGHTERED!]

An American military spokesman in Baghdad said he was unaware of any “event that fits the description” provided by the Iraqi police. But the spokesman said that coalition aircraft “within the vicinity” attacked and killed six armed men in the back of a truck on Thursday afternoon as they planted a roadside bomb.

[Did they plant the bomb next to them like an AK47?]

Attorney General Visits Iraq

WASHINGTON, Aug. 11 (AP) — The Justice Department said Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales arrived in Baghdad on Saturday to meet with department officials who are there to help fashion Iraq’s legal system."

[Pfffftttt!

So what's Bush say?

"Military gaining in Iraq, Bush says; Political progress lagging, he adds" by Bloomberg August 12, 2007

President Bush said the military is gaining in Iraq as a result of the increased number of US troops there.

Bush
said yesterday in his weekly radio address:

"Our surge is seizing the initiative from the enemy and handing it to the Iraqi people."

Bush said the troop increase led to the killing of the mastermind behind the bombing of the Golden Mosque in Samarra, one of Shi'ite Muslims' holiest shrines, and said residents in Iraq are providing tips to soldiers to combat terrorism.

[Always brings that up, sniff, sniff!]

The president said: "Iraqi forces are taking losses at a much higher rate than we are."

[And that is GOOD PROGRESS!!

Our death totals UP, and the Iraqis EVEN MORE, and THIS MASS-MURDERING SOB thinks it is a GOOD THING!!

BLOODY FUCKING BASTARD!]

Bush ordered deployment of about 30,000 additional troops to Iraq earlier this year.... Democrats touted [the] legislation.... Bush's war adviser, Lieutenant General Douglas Lute, said Friday the Pentagon needs to reevaluate deployment lengths.

Lute said in an interview on National Public Radio:

"Come the spring, some variables will have to change -- either the degree to which the American ground forces, the Marines and the Army in particular, are deployed around the world to include Iraq, or the length of time they're deployed in one tour, or the length of time they enjoy at home."

[How come the Sunday paper can't use the word DRAFT?!

'Cause that's what Looney Lute called for on NPR!

Oh, I'm sorry, Fox News backs up Georgie today:]

FOXNews reporter Courtney Keely reports from Baghdad that the surge is working. Really, it is. Don’t pay attention to the fact that she’s in a Baghdad market surrounded by MORE security than John McCain and every Iraqi she speaks to tells her about the death and destruction all around them.

I mean, c’mon, don’t let the reality of the situation get in the way of a good cheerleading segment for Bush’s policies."

More commentary on the Faux video report:

"August 11, 2007.... During her close-up assessment of wha... During her close-up assessment of what she has seen this FOX News reporter is amazed that she is able to walk in an open air market in Iraq for the first time in 2 years. Note that she did not say if she tried before...just that she has not done it. Walking in an open air market. WOW! Granted, she admits she has more security that John McCain had in his market walk a few months ago as she is embedded with a General on tour. She has the 82nd Airborne surrounding her on the ground and a few attack helicopters in the air...but isn't it amazing that she had the confidence to walk in an open air market wearing only full body armor and helmet as she was surrounded by these dozens of troops? As she makes primitive hand gestures to the Iraqis who describe their relatives being killed and explaining how there are relatively few shoppers buying anything this video must demand that the close up of the reporter be the weighty part of the report as the reporter says things are looking up as opposed to every other sentence of the report which just confirms that things are looking down. Then again isn't this typical of so many things sold to Americans from the time that George W Bush said he was a uniter and not a divider...they hate us for our freedoms...they knew exactly where the WMDs were...Saddam had a hand in 9/11...we do not torture and so many more. Remember, do not look at the facts surrounding the report...look to the reporter and the close-up in which they look you in the eye and say things are going well...as the fire of war rages around the reporter in the stories of the people being afraid to live. We report...you decide. The words of the report sure helped me decide!"

[And they are allegedly selling this shit to the Amurkn people!

Question, Amurkn people: Do you GAG when you DRINK or EAT SHIT?!?!]
