"Shiite pilgrimage ends mostly peacefully" by Sally Buzbee/Associated Press August 10, 2007
BAGHDAD --A car bomb killed at least eight people in a northern Kurdish area Friday, but Baghdad remained largely calm with a driving ban still in effect and thousands of Shiite pilgrims headed home.
The pilgrimage Thursday... saw hundreds of thousands of Shiites march to a northern Baghdad shrine, undisturbed by any major violence.
The car bomb, hidden in a parked car, hit a market in a Kurdish area of Kirkuk, a disputed oil-rich city 180 miles north of Baghdad. At least eight people were killed and 45 were wounded.
Elsewhere in northern Iraq, a suicide car bomber struck an Iraqi army patrol northeast of Mosul, killing four soldiers and wounding 14.
This is where the newspaper cut off the piece. The rest is web:
A roadside bomb also exploded near a minibus in Baqouba, 35 miles northeast of Baghdad, killing two passengers. Another civilian was killed in a drive-by shooting as he was walking elsewhere in the city.... In all, at least 55 people were killed or found dead nationwide.
The Shiite pilgrims headed home Friday a day after massing in the streets outside a golden-domed shrine in northern Baghdad to commemorate an 8th-century saint. Only scattered violence was reported against the pilgrims.
[That's 'cause the "sectarian" violence is from U.S.-sponsored Baghdad Option!
"Security Council Approves a Broader U.N. Mandate in Iraq to Seek Reconciliation" by DANIEL B. SCHNEIDER and DAMIEN CAVE
"Baghdad remained relatively calm on Friday, the third day of a curfew for a Shiite religious holiday. North of the capital, though, a car bomb exploded at a market in Kirkuk, killing at least seven people and wounding at least 49.
Burhan Habeeb Tayyb, director of the Kirkuk police, said that four people were missing, likely buried in the rubble of a blast that destroyed 25 shops and charred at least 15 cars:
“The explosion happened in the middle of the market, which was crowded with shoppers and vendors.”
Officials in Diyala Province said they had found nine bodies in and around Khalis.... Four of the dead belonged to the same family.
In Mosul, a suicide car bomber killed six Iraqi soldiers, security officials said. Gunmen kidnapped three policemen and executed them, according to the authorities, who also said they had found 11 bodies in the city.
In the southern Baghdad area of Dora... at least six unidentified bodies were found throughout the city."
Yup, just another day of SUCCESS in the SURGE!
