WASHINGTON - The epic battle between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination shifted yesterday to the disputed delegates from Florida and Michigan, whose fate is rapidly becoming the flash point for Clinton supporters' anger.

Hundreds of her backers, including a contingent from Massachusetts, plan to protest outside the Washington hotel hosting the party's Rules and Bylaws Committee, whose ruling on Saturday could determine whether the nomination fight ends next week - or perhaps continues all the way to the party's convention in late August.

"We want people to know why we're there and that we are supporting the Clinton campaign and we feel she's the better candidate," said Christine Samuelson, a 57-year-old realtor and former Newton alderwoman who volunteered for Clinton in five states during the primaries. "And we want to make sure that she gets a fair shake."

Clinton's loyalists are encouraging the protests - and ratcheting up arguments for why Clinton deserves the lion's share of the unseated delegates because she handily won the two states' unsanctioned primaries. Even though she agreed to those rules.

Currently within 45 delegates of clinching the nomination, Obama wants to avoid a spectacle that could harden the divide within the party.
"With a click of a mouse in the mid-Atlantic, we could get thousands of people there," Obama's campaign manager, David Plouffe, told reporters yesterday. "But in the interest of party unity, we are not encouraging a protest. We don't think a scene is helpful as we try to bring the party together."

Translation: Clinton will destroy the party before admitting defeat.

Though Plouffe said the fairest resolution "would be a 50-50 split" with Clinton, her campaign has flatly rejected that proposal, saying she should be awarded more delegates, in proportion to her victory margin in both states.

Steven Grossman, a top Clinton fund-raiser and Massachusetts supporter, said Obama would be wise to recognize that Saturday will be a "singular moment" to mollify Clinton and her supporters.
There is no "mollifying" her anymore than George W. Bush can be "mollified."
"To the extent that Senator Obama and his campaign and his supporters demonstrate the kind of collegiality and collaboration on Saturday that shows both the kind of nominee he will be, should he be the nominee, and the kind of president he will be, should he win on Nov. 4, that will go a long way toward rebuilding relationships that are going to be essential over the next several months to beat John McCain," said Grossman, a former national party chairman.

The Democratic National Committee voided the Florida and Michigan delegations to punish them for holding primaries in January, ahead of schedule. The candidates pledged not to campaign in the two states, and Obama pulled his name off the Michigan ballot.
But as she fell behind Obama, Clinton began arguing more emphatically that her wins should count, and she now needs the biggest possible gain from the two states to have any hope of catching Obama.

Campaigning last week in Florida, she compared her fight to the struggles of blacks and women for the right to vote and warned that Democrats were in danger of repeating the 2000 Florida presidential vote debacle....

If Clinton were awarded half the delegates she won in the two states, and if Obama received none from Michigan, she would cut his lead from about 200 delegates to 150, and Obama would be about 50 delegates farther away from the finish line....
"We are hopeful and expectant that people will do the right thing - and the right thing will be seating delegates at 100 percent of strength," said Howard Wolfson, Clinton's communications director.

Clinton also wants the popular votes in Florida and Michigan to count to give her the overall lead - a key part of her closing argument to the dwindling number of undeclared superdelegates, the party and elected officials who in all likelihood will decide the nomination.

She sent them a letter and accompanying 11-page memo yesterday, insisting that she, not Obama, would be the strongest Democrat to go up against McCain in November. Samuelson and a small group of supporters have purchased air time on local television for a 30-second ad contending that the Florida and Michigan delegations should be seated for Clinton. Samuelson said that if the election were held today, she would write in Clinton's name on the ballot rather than vote for Obama.

Therese Murray, the Massachusetts Senate president and an ardent Clinton backer, said if the rules panel does not fully seat the Florida and Michigan delegations, it would regret it come November. "The voters shouldn't be disenfranchised. They went out and they voted in force," she said.
Then rules and laws mean nothing, huh? And what does it matter if it wasn't a fair primary, and Hitlery agreed to the rules. What does that matter?
But others say the divisions within the party will fall away once the general election race begins in earnest.
"In the heat of a contest, people say all kinds of things," said state Representative Ruth B. Balser, a Clinton supporter who said she will support the Democratic nominee, whoever it is. "What's important is that both Senator Clinton and Senator Obama have said that at the end of the day, whoever is the nominee, they will work their heart out to elect a Democrat. They have set the tone."

POOR HOWARD Dean. The head of the Democratic National Committee has to figure out what to do with Florida and Michigan, which broke party rules by holding their presidential primaries early. Senator Hillary Clinton, who won the two flawed contests, wants them to be treated like any other primaries. Doing so would be a slight to voters in states that followed the rules - and unfair to Senator Barack Obama, whose name wasn't even on the ballot in Michigan.
Strictly speaking, the cleanest option is to stick to the rules laid down in advance and strip the rogue primary states of all their delegates. But excluding two key swing states is turning out to be untenable politically. So when the party's rules committee meets Saturday, the least-bad option would be to follow the Republicans' lead by docking the two states half, not all, of their delegates. Then the party should spot Obama the delegates owed to "uncommitted" voters in Michigan - votes that almost surely would have gone to Obama or to John Edwards, who has now endorsed Obama.
This compromise would be fair to Clinton, who wouldn't have fared as well in a contested Michigan primary.
But she will still reject it!
You see, it is not about voters or fairness or the country or the party to Ms. Hitlery -- it is ALL ABOUT HER and her lust for the POWER she was PROMISED!!!!!!!
And it wouldn't affect the nomination battle, which Obama has all but won. (This page has endorsed his bid for the Democratic nomination.)
The Democrats' rules prohibited most states from holding early presidential primaries. Perhaps voters shouldn't suffer for their legislators' folly. But the Clinton campaign isn't protecting voters; it's throwing out any old argument that might justify narrowing Obama's lead in delegates.
Clinton's campaign has been touting nationwide popular vote totals that presume Obama has not one supporter in Michigan. And in an opinion piece this week on Politico.com, Clinton surrogate Lanny Davis insisted that giving uncommitted Michigan delegates to Obama would be "totally unfair" - and suggested that Clinton receive most of the delegates owed to people who voted against her. This proposal, Davis said, is "Solomonic" and "generous to Obama."

If nothing else, the Michigan-Florida debacle should teach Democrats that the nation needs a better way of scheduling primaries in the future; the rotating regional primaries proposed by the National Association of Secretaries of State is a good model. In the meantime, Dean needs to engineer a way to make peace with Michigan and Florida voters - without conceding that the contests were even remotely normal."

How will they do it?:
- They will fly in a sniper from Israel (naturally) in a private jet.
- They will have obtained two identical rifles (to avoid TSD-style controversy about the type of rifle found), keeping the receipt from the second rifle (bought at a gun shop in the area).
- They will send a special invitation to the patsy, a white male from the South with three names, to attend a reception after the public rally.
- At the rally, the sniper will blow Obama's head clean off. He will then head back to his jet to be flown back to the Homeland.
- The patsy will find himself alone at the site of the 'reception', will be drugged, and eventually will be shot by authorities, 'resisting arrest' (they won't make the same mistake of allowing the patsy to leave the scene, and dead men can't defend themselves). The second rifle will be the 'throw down', placed by the authorities beside the patsy so the photos can show the assassin beside his gun. Later, the assassination rifle will be swapped for the throw down (so the ballistics will match), with the patsy's fingerprints applied to the sniper's rifle post mortem.
- Although the patsy was liberal (being thrilled to obtain an invitation to an Obama reception), he will be described as a white supremacist, neo-Nazi, gun nut. None of his friends will be able to recall hearing him say one racist thing, and nobody will ever recall seeing him with a gun or even talking about guns. Nevertheless, the authorities will raid his house (described as a 'compound'), and will discover a huge cache of guns (including the receipt for the assassination rifle, although a later check of the surveillance tape at the gun shop will show that the video system was malfunctioning at the time the rifle was purchased), neo-Nazi regalia on the walls (a special touch for the people behind the assassination), and a collection of white supremacist literature.
Case closed. Of course, as the assassination may have to be performed at a location decided at the last minute, they would probably have to have an assortment of patsies, rifles etc., a set for each probable city.
There will be riots, and the authorities will get a chance to use their new round-up capabilities. The Democratic Party will be permanently destroyed (blacks and progressive whites will blame Hillary and the party establishment, and will never vote for the party again), and President McCain will be able to continue the Era of The Wars For The Jews, at least until the United States is utterly bankrupt, unable to even borrow the money to slaughter more Muslims in aid of the Zionist project."
