BAGHDAD - Hundreds of American and Iraqi troops backed by helicopters descended yesterday on a remote desert area southwest of Baghdad to root out Al Qaeda in Iraq and search for two US soldiers missing since a deadly insurgent ambush six months ago.
Acting on intelligence, the soldiers dug through heaps of sand and went house-to-house in two Sunni villages near the boundary with Anbar Province after a dramatic predawn air assault.
US officers emphasized that it was only the first day of the operation, which also is intended to establish a long-term presence west of the Euphrates River.

The raids began about 4 a.m. after two Chinook helicopters and eight Black Hawks dropped more than 600 US and Iraqi soldiers into the villages of Owesap and Betra, about 15 miles southwest of the Iraqi capital.
Meanwhile, US troops killed two Al Qaeda-linked militants and detained 12 in raids southeast of Baghdad and in Ramadi, Mosul, and Kirkuk, the military said.
Iraqi police said eight Al Qaeda fighters were killed in a separate event near Moqdadiyah, about 60 miles north of Baghdad."

The attacks were mounted late Tuesday near Taji, a restive town 15 miles north of Baghdad, after American forces said they saw armed men in the area and detected “hostile intent.” Helicopters and airplanes strafed buildings, and ground troops later exchanged fire with men who had shot at them, according to the military version of events. Three weapons caches were found that contained, among other things, antiaircraft machine guns, missiles and a wide array of explosive devices, the military said.
Yet Sheik Jasim Zaidan Khalaf, who heads one of the area’s American-backed tribal groups, known as an Awakening Council, said the Americans had erred in the attack. The sheik said his council had been active in purging the area of militants belonging to Al Qaeda of Mesopotamia, a homegrown Sunni extremist group. The council recently detained 20 insurgents from the group, the sheik said, and confiscated their weapons with the intent of turning them over to United States forces.
The sheik said: “The Americans suspected our people. The whole issue started with a mistake.”
The sheik’s brother, Mansour abd Salim, said that members of the council made frantic calls to their American military contacts during the attack, but that there was no reprieve until Wednesday at 2:30 a.m. Fifty Awakening Council members were killed, the sheik said, along with five insurgents whom they had detained.

The attack, and its aftermath, highlight potential confusion in areas here where Sunnis have taken it upon themselves to battle other Sunnis. In this case though, it did not seem that the council’s dismay would escalate into outright hostility or worse. Council members said they would continue to work with American forces and simply wanted an explanation.

Lieutenant Cole wrote in an e-mail message:

The United States said it had arrested 21 suspected insurgents during the operation, though Mr. Salim said they were in fact council members, 13 of whom, he said, were later released.
Violence continued to plague parts of the country on Friday. One person was killed and four were wounded when a bomb exploded at an outdoor motorcycle market in central Baghdad. Four unidentified bodies were found elsewhere in the city.
In Diyala, the embattled province north of Baghdad, three policemen were killed by a roadside bomb, and a woman died after members of Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia fired on the headquarters of a local group sympathetic to American forces.
An Iraqi television reporter, Muntadhar al-Zaidi, 26, was kidnapped Friday morning in central Baghdad on his way to work, said Ziad al-Ajeely, who leads Journalistic Freedoms Observatory, an Iraqi advocacy group.
The kidnapping was discovered at noon, when Mr. Zaidi’s brother called his cellphone and a stranger replied, saying, “Forget Muntadhar."
