An American raid on Wednesday morning:
"In Sadr City, a vast district of cinderblock houses that is the stronghold of the Mahdi Army, a large Shiite militia that fought two battles against the American military under the command of a radical Shiite cleric, Moktada al-Sadr.
Iraqi forces and American advisers entered the far northern tip of the district... and immediately came under fire. The military called in air support, and aircraft fired high-caliber guns at militiamen on the ground... 10 militants were killed... in the fight, which residents said lasted several hours.

The Iraqi authorities put the total wounded at 20. Soldiers continued to a nearby mosque, where the military suspected that the kidnappers of a missing American soldier were located, and detained three suspects... The raid was carried out by Iraqi forces and backed by the Americans. But in nearly all cases, Americans initiate secret raids.

He is popular among hard-line Shiites, who put his image on cellphones and call him the Zarqawi of the Shiites, a reference to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the former Qaeda leader who urged Sunnis to kill Shiites."
