"Man dies in beating at downtown park; Witness details midday attack" by Tania deLuzuriaga, Globe Staff | July 5, 2008
A man was beaten to death yesterday morning in a downtown park near Faneuil Hall Marketplace, not far from where tourists sat on benches and milled about the Holocaust Memorial.
Boston police were called to the intersection of North and Union streets just before noon with a report that a drunk man was lying on the ground, bleeding.
"His friend said he'd been assaulted," said a Boston police spokesman, Officer Eddy Chrispin.
A witness who was sitting on a bench across from the Purple Shamrock pub told the Globe that the man was approached by four others and beaten over the head with "what looked like a towel."
"He was lying on the ground, bleeding from the head and not moving. There must have been something hard inside," she said, before being escorted away by a Boston homicide detective.
The victim, described as a 40-year-old male, was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police were waiting to notify relatives before releasing his identity.
The slaying was the city's 31st of the year, Chrispin said. The number climbed to 32 later in the day - the same number at this time last year - after a 17-year-old male was shot and killed in Hyde Park.
Authorities were looking for an assailant described as a black male, 6 feet, 2 inches tall, wearing a red shirt, and carrying a white bag."He was just a homeless guy anyway (probably a veteran, too, right?).
He doesn't matter.
"Woman sexually assaulted in North End"
Boston police are investigating a sexual assault in the North End yesterday that they believe may be connected to a recent string of attacks in the neighborhood.
At about 3:30 a.m., a man allegedly approached a woman from behind on Foster Street, knocked her down, and assaulted her.
Police described the suspect as a white male in his 20s with short, light-colored hair. The victim fought her attacker and was able to run away and call for help.
Last month, a woman walking near the intersection of Fulton and Richmond streets at 3:15 a.m. was attacked by a man who she said appeared to be in his late 20s.
Police said that assault was similar to at least two others that have happened this year.
"We believe there is a connection, but that's something that's still under investigation," said Officer Eddy Chrispin, police spokesman. Police told women to travel with others, be aware of their surroundings, and enter a public place if they feel threatened.
"I'm always super-sensitive about my surroundings," a North End resident, 29, said while walking her dog. "I hardly ever walk alone and I always keep my cellphone with me. I don't put myself into those situations."
Police urge anyone with information to call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-494-TIPS or Sexual Assault Unit detectives at 617-343-4400.
"Police seeking witnesses to shooting that injured 3"
Investigators are searching for witnesses to a brazen highway shooting in Randolph early yesterday morning, in which a gunman wounded three people when he stood up out of a sunroof and riddled another car with .45-caliber bullets.
At least eight rounds of gunfire from an automatic pistol pierced a white
The victims, two women and one man who were in their late teens and early 20s, had injuries described as not life-threatening.
The shooting occurred between 12:15 a.m. and 12:30 a.m. on Route 24 northbound after the Camry's occupants left the Brockton Fair, Keating said. The Camry's occupants told authorities they were accosted by someone in a white car near the exit for Route 139. "One of the passengers in the white car popped up though the sunroof and fired at least eight rounds into the car of the victims," Keating said.
The Camry's driver continued north, turned onto Route 128, and called police in Dedham.
The other car sped off. The victims were taken to Boston area hospitals. Authorities are asking witnesses to call State Police at 508-820-2121.
"Perhaps someone saw something - maybe at the fairground or on Route 24," Keating said.
Meanwhile, we got Boston cops cruising the strip, busy busting brothels in Wellesley and hanging out in bars!
