Looking at it a second time I see it is from Tikrit, which is not mentioned in the article.

BAGHDAD - Iraqi security forces battled Shi'ite gunmen in Kut yesterday, raising tensions among rival factions of the country's majority religious community and straining a seven-month cease-fire proclaimed by the biggest Shi'ite militia.

Also yesterday, an American soldier was killed and four others were wounded in a rocket or mortar attack south of the capital, the military said....

If the surge was so successful, why are we being rocketed?

The statement did not provide more details about the location; the area has a volatile mix of Sunni and Shi'ite extremists.

The fighting in Kut, 100 miles southeast of Baghdad, broke out Thursday night when factions of the Mahdi Army, led by anti-American cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, attacked checkpoints throughout the city, officials and witnesses said.

Two police officers and two gunmen were killed during the clashes in Kut....

They attacked checkpoints?

That's either a lie or not good news, take your pick, 'murkn.

Which bowl of shit you like?

Nutty-cornies, or green-apple splatters?

Also yesterday, US and Iraqi forces raided neighborhoods of southern Baghdad and Diwaniyah, 80 miles south of the capital, detaining suspected members of the Mahdi Army, Iraqi police said....

Yeah, that never pisses people off, though!

Not like they would FIGHT BACK or anything!

Sadr's supporters have complained that the Shi'ite-led government has used the cease-fire to accelerate a crackdown against their movement in Baghdad and the Shi'ite heartland south of the capital....

A Sadrist member of parliament alleged that the crackdown in Kut and elsewhere in the south was part of a move by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's Dawa party and the supreme council to prevent Sadr's followers from winning control of key southern provinces in provincial elections expected this fall.

"They have no supporters in the central and southern provinces, but we do," Ahmed al-Massoudi said. "If the crackdown against the Sadrists continues, we will begin consultations with other parliamentary blocs to bring down the government and replace it with a genuinely national one."

.... Iraqi reinforcements were sent to Kut four days ago to wrest control from Mahdi Army fighters, police said.

However, Sadr's followers have been growing increasingly angry at what they consider a government campaign against them under the guise of a security crackdown.

Noooooo!

In Basra, a Sadrist cleric, Sheik Nasir al-Mashaykhi, told worshipers at Friday prayer services that "we are committed to the cease-fire decision" and would punish Mahdi Army members who break the truce.

But Mashaykhi warned against any move to crack down on Sadr's followers in Basra, the country's second largest city and headquarters of Iraq's vast oil industry.

"Basra is not Kut or Diwaniyah," he said. "Basra will turn into a cemetery for those who try to fight the Sadrists or detain them."

In Baghdad, US and Iraqi troops clashed with Shi'ite gunmen late Thursday in a southwestern neighborhood, police said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information. There was no immediate comment from US officials.

However, the US command said Iraqi helicopters late Thursday fired a Hellfire missile and 30mm cannon at gunmen who had attacked coalition troops with mortars or rockets. Six of the gunmen were killed, the US statement said.

That's either a lie or not good news, take your pick, 'murkn.

Which bowl of shit you like?

The statement did not identify the assailants but said the attack occurred in a Baghdad district where Shi'ite militiamen operate.... "

I wonder how many innocent civilians were blown away in the latest forays by U.S. forces and their Iraqi pawns.

Update: Turns out those guys were six of our Awakening friends:

"4 Americans Killed in Iraq; U.S. Attack Leaves 6 Dead"

".... Details were sharply disputed regarding the attack early Saturday near Samarra that an Iraqi police official said left the six pro-American Sunni militia guards dead.

One Sunni militia leader in the area said the men who were killed had been staffing a legitimate checkpoint. But the American military command for northern Iraq said the Apache helicopter fired on men who had appeared to be trying to bury a roadside bomb.

“American forces said that the people they killed were gunmen, but they were my men, and they were even wearing Awakening uniforms,” said Abu Farouk, a leader of pro-American Awakening militia forces near Samarra. Two other Sunni militia fighters were wounded.

American military officials acknowledged that six people were killed by an Apache helicopter, but they rejected the account provided by the Iraqi police official and Abu Farouk.

The military said it could not confirm whether or not the six men had been part of a pro-American militia. But the military said the helicopter had attacked “suspected I.E.D. emplacers” after they were spotted “conducting suspicious terrorist activity in an area historically known for improvised explosive device emplacement.”

“I.E.D.,” or improvised explosive device, is military jargon for large roadside bombs, often made from old artillery shells or other powerful explosives, that can destroy Humvees and other vehicles.

The American statement also denied that the men who were killed had been at a militia checkpoint, and instead described the area as being “near a recent I.E.D. site.”

The two Iraqis wounded in the attack were evacuated to a hospital, the military statement added."

Wait a minute, that was a whole different incident.

Oh, yeah, that lying MSM that got us into this hellish occupation, then lied about the surge success is really coming clean on what's going on in Iraq!

Yeah, Iraq is just great since Bush invaded, yup!
