Memory Hole: The Woman From Iraq

(Updated: Originally published on November 7, 2006)

I can't remember where I saw it, but it's a quote.

"Two women walked purposefully down the Karrada sidewalk. One was a Christian, who said she was happy if the Shiites were happy because they were the ones with the power now. Another, Haloud, gave a piercing gaze, but not her sect, and grabbed a reporter's hand as she spoke in broken English.

The woman, with almost-desperate intensity:

"I'm very sad for Iraq. For that road. For that woman. For that chair. For that man. I'm very sad for my country. That's it, O.K.?"

And she rushed off, her black abaya billowing behind her in the wind."
