Saving a Home

"India: Guards Needed for Tigers"

The Indian government wants to recruit retired soldiers to patrol tiger sanctuaries in the hopes of saving the last of the animals after an official report confirmed a drastic drop in numbers of wild tigers. Conservationists praised the decision, saying that even if it had flaws, at least Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his government were finally taking the plight of the tiger seriously. The report confirmed initial findings that there were no more than 1,500 tigers in India’s reserves and jungles — down from about 3,600 just five years ago and an estimated 100,000 a century ago. It called for appointing a top police official to head the new Wildlife Crime Bureau, created to halt the killings and punish poachers (AP)."

Another species headed for extinction, huh? Sob!

New Home

"California: An Alaskan Moves South"

After living nearly her whole life in the Alaska Zoo, Maggie the elephant made her way to a new home in California. The 25-year-old African elephant arrived at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield bound for the Performing Animal Welfare Society in San Andreas, about 75 miles away. The Air Force agreed to transport Maggie, for years Alaska’s only elephant, as part of a training mission after officials with PAWS and the zoo discovered she was too big for a commercial airline. After arriving at the base, Maggie was trucked to her new home at the sanctuary, where she will have 30 acres to share with nine other elephants. Maggie arrived in Alaska in 1983 after her herd was culled in South Africa (AP)."

I'm glad Maggie won't be alone anymore (after humans killed her herd? Sob)!

Elephants are very special creatures.

I watched an Animal Planet show on them, and they remember where their herd mates die.

In fact, one died during their journey on the show, and the other elephants had a devil of a time getting the mother to move along.

The narrator even pointed out that the elephants were SHOWING EMOTIONS!!!!

Just like my
favorite animal in the whole world!

LIFE is PRECIOUS, world!!!

It deserves RESPECT and LOVE, not slaughter!!!!

PEACE and LOVE, world!

The planet is big enough for all of us -- if it is cared for and used correctly!
