JERUSALEM - Hours before Barack Obama's arrival in Jerusalem, a group of religious leaders accused him of "flip-flops" over the status of the Israeli capital and demanded that he use his visit to the country to flop back to his previous position.
Obama should "reaffirm his positive remarks" that the capital must remain undivided and "disavow subsequent retractions" that indicated he saw the city's borders as open to future negotiations, said Jeff Daube, director of the Israel office of the Zionist Organization of America, at a press conference.
Daube's group was one of six whose representatives gathered under an Israeli and misshapen US flag taped to an air-conditioning duct in a hotel basement, repeatedly invoking the 250,000 American citizens living in Israel - about half of whom are believed to be registered to vote - as leverage to push Obama on an issue they said was central to the integrity of a Jewish state.

"Washington, D.C., has many of the same ethnic problems we have in Jerusalem," said Toby Willig of the group Emunah Women. "I haven't heard anybody talk about a solution [of] Washington being divided."
The press conference was held across the street from the King David Hotel, where Obama and his entourage planned to stay, and down the block from the site of a rampage by a Palestinian construction driver hours before Obama's arrival.

One of the religious leaders charged that such attacks - and those by Qassam rockets launched from Gaza into the town of Sderot, where Obama will visit today - would become more likely if Jerusalem's sovereignty is challenged,
"It is not rocket science to see that if Jerusalem becomes divided, it becomes a war zone," said Rabbi Aaron S. Tirschwell of the Worldwide Young Israel Movement, a confederation of Orthodox synagogues primarily in North America.
At a conference of the America Israel Political Action Committee in Washington last month, Obama said Jerusalem should remain the undivided capital of Israel. He later clarified that the ultimate status of Jerusalem should be solved through negotiations, but he hoped it would not be divided by fences, as it was in the past.
After arriving in Israel from Jordan last night, Obama said that if elected president he would strengthen the special relationship between the United States and Israel. Obama vowed to "work diligently, urgently, and in a unified way to defeat terrorism."
