The AmeriKan MSM's Obsession With Mugabe

You'd think it was the only country in Africa with problems these days.

As my first post today stated, I'm tired of the agenda pushing.

Up and out!

"Mugabe takes seat at African summit; Shows off win in Zimbabwe; Leader unfazed by criticism" by Kennedy Abwao and Alan Cowell, New York Times News Service | July 1, 2008

SHARM EL SHEIK, Egypt - Asha-Rose Migiro, the UN deputy secretary general, told the African leaders here they had reached a "moment of truth."

"We are facing an extremely grave crisis," Migiro said. "This is the single greatest challenge to regional stability in southern Africa, not only because of its terrible humanitarian and security consequences, but because of the dangerous political precedent it sets."

(Blog author just shaking his head)

Yeah, never mind Somalia or Ethiopia.

Look, I don't think any one should suffer in this world (make it local, local, local), but I OBJECT to the DEMONIZING and AGENDA-PUSHING AGENDA -- especially (as with Saddam) he was ONCE OUR FRIEND!

But African leaders showed little appetite for public confrontation with Mugabe.

Yeah, because THEY COULD BE NEXT in the U.S. cross-hairs!!

The US ambassador to the United Nations, Zalmay Khalilzad, said the United States might introduce a Security Council resolution this week to impose formal sanctions against the Mugabe government. Given that Mugabe flouted last week's statement from the council calling for an end to the violence surrounding the elections, the Council has to act in some manner, the ambassador said.

"I'm pretty confident that the Council cannot remain silent on this issue," Khalilzad told reporters. Although the 15-member Council passed a unanimous statement condemning the violence in Zimbabwe a week ago, an attempt to declare the runoff illegitimate Friday sank after South Africa led the opposition to further criticism, saying Africans should resolve the issue.

Khalilzad expressed confidence that the United States could muster the nine votes needed to push the sanctions through, but predicted that doing so would involve "tough" negotiations.

"We are looking for focused sanctions on the regime itself," he said. "Those who would oppose such action would have a lot to explain."
