Occupation Iraq: Terror in Sadr City

Caused by, you guessed it, AMERICAN TROOPS!!!!!

"Iraqi Parliament Debates Split of Power and Money" by ALISSA J. RUBIN

".... In Sadr City, the Shiite area in eastern Baghdad, the American military raided several houses at dawn Thursday, rounding up 15 men and killing one in the initial stages of the operation. The military said the men who were detained were believed to be responsible for kidnapping and murdering Iraqi citizens, carrying out mortar attacks and planting roadside bombs known as explosively formed penetrators. Residents said the raids terrified the neighborhood.... "

Ah, the sweet stench of Bush's "liberation!"

"Security volunteers in Iraq suffering increase in attacks" by Tina Susman, Los Angeles Times | February 8, 2008

BAGHDAD - Attacks on Iraqi security volunteers, who are given much of the credit for reducing violence in their country, have doubled since October, the US military said yesterday.

The statement came after six volunteers were killed in two incidents. In one attack, suspected Al Qaeda in Iraq members killed three brothers a year after their father, who also had allied himself with US forces, was murdered.

You mean this "
Al-CIA-Duh," right?

The US military says the rising attacks are a sign that Sunni Muslim militants feel squeezed by the grass-roots security effort, which has grown to include at least 70,000 Iraqis who stand guard at checkpoints as members of concerned local citizens or CLCs. In return, they receive $10 a day from US military funds....

Yeah, the RISE in VIOLENCE is SUCCESS!!

Just like the alleged drop in violence was a success.

How ORWELLIAN!!!

And where are my $70 dollars a week?

US officials... said 16 suspected Shi'ite militants had been captured in a raid earlier in the day in Sadr City, the Shi'ite slum in Baghdad....

A military statement said US and Iraqi forces were fired on as they entered a house during the raid and that they returned fire, slightly wounding a woman and injuring one of the suspects. The wounded man died later.

Some local residents denied that anyone fired on the troops. Abu Hussein, who lives near the targeted houses, said any shooting came from the security forces who burst into the homes as people were sleeping.

He accused troops of being overly rough with residents, including an elderly man who collapsed after being forced out of his house. "There was no reason to open fire on the people," Hussein said.

The conflicting accounts were not unusual for Iraq, where locals frequently accuse US forces of causing unnecessary casualties to civilians during operations targeting suspected insurgents. Three times in the past week, the US military has acknowledged erroneously killing Iraqi civilians or US-allied Iraqi security volunteers during its operations.

In the most recent incident, an Iraqi civilian died yesterday during an air strike south of Baghdad. A US military statement said American forces called for air support after coming under fire as they conducted a boat patrol south of Baghdad. It was later determined that the initial shots were fired in error by security volunteers. The Americans "followed proper self-defense measures" by returning fire and requesting air support, the statement said."

Yeah, "proper self-defense" is calling in air bombers to level the place!

Fuck the U.S. military!!

So how many Iraqis dying in all of this?

35 people killed every day, with the number of Iraqis killed by the surge around 300 per day, 10,000 per month -- and 1.2 million Iraqis dead since the invasion, mainly due to the U.S. military's 75 air raids a day, and the five-fold increase in air bombings.
