TO THE EDITOR:

“This time we’re armed,” writes Sari Gordon in last week’s Herald re: “Jews and the Holocaust.”

Who, some wonder, is “we?” Are Jews in Pierce County stashing Uzi automatics in their kitchens, keeping them carefully in butter and lox? Are American Jews nationwide preparing themselves for an onslaught from, say, swastika-ed bikers? Are the deracinated grandchildren of former shtetl dwellers sipping their lattes in Beverly Hills, arming their BMWs and Mercedes (Nazi-era companies) for a Nazi-American putsch? Is Steven Spielberg, victim of Hollywood, practicing his aim?

If, however, Ms. Gordon means by “we” the vicious and wholly U.S. supported state of Israel, she is correct (is she an Israeli?). Israel has indeed one of the best-equipped militaries on the planet. Thanks to us...the American taxpayer: Since 1973, Israel has cost the United States about $1.6 trillion. Divided by today’s population, that is more than $5,700 per person...this per an article in a recent edition of that radical rag, the Christian Science Monitor.

If so, we wonder why an ethnic minority who has done so well in this country would go out of its way to declare its allegiance to another country, to the point of treason: American Jews who unconditionally support Israel, no matter the consequences to the nation in which they dwell and have prospered, i.e., the United States, must be (some would argue) considered traitors. Read the book “The Israel Lobby and U.S Foreign Policy” by John J. Mearsheimer and Stephen W. Walt, conservative (America first) academics at the Universities of Chicago and Harvard. Wonder why we are in a losing war in Iraq? Who got us there? Why both Republican and Democratic politicians refuse to consider leaving? It’s simple: AIPAC...American-Israeli Political Action Committee. It’s a lobby, folks, and we lose.
