BAGHDAD - Al Qaeda militants commandeered Iraqi Army vehicles and then attacked US-backed Sunni fighters in south Baghdad during a fierce gunbattle that left 18 people dead yesterday, police and local Sunnis said.
Later yesterday, mortar shells or rockets slammed into the US-protected Green Zone - underscoring warnings by senior American commanders that extremists still pose a threat to Iraq's fragile security despite the downturn in violence.

The gunbattle began before dawn when Al Qaeda militants killed three Iraqi soldiers, took their uniforms, and seized two Humvees in the rural area of Hawr Rijab on the southern rim of the capital, according to police investigators.
Militants then drove the Humvees to the headquarters of the local "awakening council" - Sunnis who have turned against Al Qaeda in Iraq. The assailants opened fire on the headquarters with rifles and machine guns from the Humvees, the police report said.
US Kiowa Warrior helicopters joined the fight, blasting a van that was transporting a machine gun and mortar tube, the American military said. An F-16 jet dropped a 500-pound bomb and destroyed the vehicle as Al Qaeda broke off the attack, the United States said, adding that two insurgents were killed.
The dead included eight members of the US-backed group and seven Al Qaeda suspects in addition to the three Iraqi soldiers, according to police and local Sunni leaders.
AP Television News footage showed Iraqi police and soldiers forming a protective cordon around weeping women and children as they loaded wooden coffins onto the cars for funeral processions for those killed.

Shortly before sunset, rockets or mortar shells crashed into the Green Zone, sending plumes of smoke into the sky as the sounds of the detonations reverberated through the center of the city.
The attack, the biggest against the Green Zone in weeks, occurred as many Americans were marking Thanksgiving. Loudspeakers in the Green Zone warned people to "duck and cover" and to stay away from windows.
Duck and cover?! Ha-ha-ha-ha!
Major Brad Leighton, a US military spokesman, said there were no fatalities but some people were wounded. He refused to give numbers or nationalities.
Northeast of the capital, Iraqi security forces killed 19 Al Qaeda in Iraq fighters during a gunfight in a mixed Shi'ite-Sunni village outside Baqouba, police said. They said two civilians were killed and two others were wounded in the crossfire.
In statements posted yesterday on Islamist websites, the Al Qaeda front group, the Islamic State of Iraq, claimed responsibility for attacks on US-backed "awakening" groups around the Iraqi capital.

A spokesman for the Iraqi military, Brigadier General Qassim al-Moussawi, downplayed the latest violence, saying US and Iraqi forces were gaining the upper hand and "citizens should be patient for a while to achieve positive results."

Nevertheless, the return of relative calm has encouraged thousands of Iraqis to return from Syria, where they fled during the height of the Sunni-Shi'ite slaughter last year. Many of them expressed confidence that violence would not return.

The Iraqi Embassy in Damascus is organizing free trips for Iraqis who want to return home.
Adnan al-Shourifi, an Iraqi diplomat, said the first free trip is scheduled for Monday, when a convoy of buses and an Iraqi Airways flight will ferry the refugees back to Iraq.
Officials said thousands of Iraqis living in Syria have headed back home in the past weeks.
"We believe that the improvement in the security situation in Iraq is now paying off and we will do our best to receive those who want to join us in building Iraq," Ali al-Dabbagh, a government spokesman, said in an interview from Damascus, where he was helping supervise the return program. "It is a sign of hope that life is returning to normal."

A hospital worker counted 11 dead, including three Iraqi soldiers, but a local sheik said 20 more bodies remained scattered throughout the village.
The village, Hawr Rajab, has been the site of fierce struggles between the homegrown Sunni insurgent group Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, which American authorities say is led by foreigners, and members of the so-called Sunni Awakening, tribal groups allied with the American forces.
The chief of Hawr Rajab’s Awakening Council, Sheik Maher al-Maenee, said 50 gunmen burst into the village from three entry points at 6:30 a.m. One resident said that they overran an Iraqi Army checkpoint and commandeered two tanks.
The attackers wore Iraqi Army fatigues, Mr. Maenee said, along with Awakening Council uniforms stolen during previous raids. Iraqi troops fought back, he said, killing at least three insurgents, and the fighting continued until 9:30 a.m., when American soldiers arrived by air and in Humvees. The attackers fled south toward Busaifi, an area considered a stronghold of Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia.

It has been contested ground for much of the last six months. The insurgents took over the rural area about a year ago and co-opted many local residents, marrying their daughters, using their homes and terrorizing Shiites who lived nearby.

But last summer, local residents formed an Awakening Council to fight them. The two groups have had several pitched battles since August, and many men sent their wives and children away for safety. About a month ago, they began to return to their homes because they thought they had stopped the insurgents’ advance for good. Now, that looks far from certain.

In another development on Thursday, Abdul Zahra al-Talaqani of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said that Iraq would greatly increase the number of Iranian pilgrims allowed to visit some holy Shiite cities in Iraq.
The plan, which Iran has yet to approve, would allow 2,500 Iranian pilgrims to visit the holy cities of Karbala and Najaf each day, up from 1,500, Mr. Talaqani said. Baghdad and Samarra would remain off limits, he said, because of security concerns.

Meanwhile, reported cases of cholera have soared in recent weeks, said May Yassem, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Health. Seventy-nine new cases have been reported, she said, most in the slums of eastern Baghdad, where sanitary conditions are poor.
Cholera has killed 23 people in Iraq this year, Ms. Yassem said. Nationwide, 4,626 cases have been reported, she said. The ministry has started to hand out water purification pills in the most heavily afflicted areas to combat the outbreak, Ms. Yassem said.

Also on Thursday, 10 mortar shells rained on the Green Zone, the sprawling fortresslike compound where the American and British Embassies and much of the Iraqi central government offices are housed, an Iraqi government official said. An American military official said 10 people were wounded, one seriously.
