BAGHDAD, Nov. 1 — Three American soldiers died in attacks in northern Iraq, the military announced Thursday, while in troubled Diyala Province at least 14 Iraqis were killed in three incidents.
Although violence persisted outside Baghdad, civilian casualties in the capital appeared to decline sharply recently, with 317 civilians killed in October. That was a drop of more than 50 percent from August, when 656 civilians were killed, according to statistics gathered by the Interior Ministry. As recently as May, 1,070 civilians were killed.
Meanwhile, 35 people killed every day, with the number of Iraqis killed by the surge around 300 per day, 10,000 per month -- with 1.2 million Iraqis dead since the invasion (not including the 1,654 killed in September), mainly due to the U.S. military's 75 air raids a day, and the five-fold increase in air bombings.

The three Americans died on Wednesday as a result of explosions near their vehicles. Two soldiers were killed and two others were wounded by a bomb while on patrol in Nineveh Province. The third soldier died in a similar incident in Salahuddin Province.
Their deaths brought the number of American soldiers killed in October to 39, the second lowest such count in two years, according to icasualties.org, a Web site that bases its figures on Pentagon statistics.
Diyala Province remains one of Iraq’s most violent places despite repeated American efforts to vanquish Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, a homegrown extremist group that American intelligence agencies say is foreign led.

The police commander of the Baladroz district south of Baquba, the capital of Diyala, was the object of the most lethal attack on Thursday. The episode began with men shooting at police checkpoints. Then, as a convoy carrying the commander, Staff Col. Faris al-Emairy, passed, the bomb exploded. It missed his vehicle but hit a police pickup truck carrying some of his bodyguards, killing six of them.
This was the fourth assassination attempt on Colonel Emairy, who said that he joined the police force two years ago and that he had been a member of the Republican Guard, an elite unit during Saddam Hussein’s rule. Isn't that nice?

In an area about 30 miles north of Baquba, a suicide bomber driving an ice truck struck near an Iraqi Army headquarters, killing two civilians and three soldiers. Eighteen people were wounded.
Ismael Abdul al-Kareem said he and other soldiers were chatting with policemen when they saw the truck approaching:
“We had no doubt what it was. Then it exploded when it was still about 200 feet from us. Otherwise, there would have been many more martyrs.”
And in Zarkosh, a Shiite village in Diyala, gunmen killed three people, including two Iraqi soldiers, on Thursday. A senior police officer in Baquba, who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak publicly, said that Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia had re-established itself outside Baquba, after being largely ousted by American and Iraqi troops last summer."
