British Breach

Ever seem to notice that governments really never protect from anything?

The question here is, why are the NYT and IHT articles different, and why does the Globe pickup the IHT piece?

Different reports for different audiences, reders? Oh, does the NYT ever STINK!!!!!

"Data breach in Britain affects 25 million; Analysts warn of potential for massive fraud" by Eric Pfanner/International Herald Tribune November 22, 2007

LONDON - Prime Minister Gordon Brown of Britain apologized yesterday for the loss of sensitive personal information on 25 million Britons, including some bank account numbers, in what analysts described as potentially the most significant privacy breach of the digital era.

The data went astray when two tax authorities' computer discs that contained information on families that receive a government financial benefit for children were lost in the mail in October. At a time of rising sensitivity about the collection and storage of personal data in government and commercial computer vaults, specialists said the news could lead to calls for tougher privacy protection laws and data handling procedures.

The information contained on the discs that were lost in Britain last month included bank account numbers, along with names, addresses, and national insurance numbers - the British equivalent of US Social Security numbers. It also included data on almost every child under 16 in Britain."

Everyone's a number and a file now.

We are supposed to trust these incompetents?

"Data Leak in Britain Affects 25 Million" byERIC PFANNER

LONDON, Nov. 21 — The British government struggled Wednesday to explain its loss of computer disks containing detailed personal information on 25 million Britons, including an unknown number of bank account identifiers, in what analysts described as potentially the most significant privacy breach of the digital era.

It has defended its decision not to disclose the loss until Tuesday, 10 days after it had been informed, saying banks had asked for time to put heightened security measures in place first.

Oh, they didn't tell anyone for ten days!

How many identities did MI5 steal for their patsy operations, huh?

The data went astray in October, after two computer disks that contained information on families that receive government financial benefits for children were sent out from a government tax agency unregistered, via a private delivery service. The episode is one of three this year in which the agency improperly handled its vast archive of personal data, according to an account by the chancellor of the Exchequer — including the sending of a second set of disks when the first set did not arrive.

“You can bet your bottom dollar that there will be people out there looking for those disks, and it’s not just MI5 trying to get them back,” said Mike Davis, an analyst with the Ovum technology consulting firm in London, referring to the British domestic security services."

What good is all this security shit when governments are just "losing" valuable and important records all the time?

Why should we believe a word they say?

Because they are accountable?

Pffffffttttt!
