Boston Globe Weather Report

Make of it what you will.

"Rescue efforts go on after floods

RUIDOSO - More than 75 people stranded by massive flooding in and around this mountain resort town still awaited rescue yesterday, but spirits rose as missing people were accounted for and the region made it through a day without rain, authorities said. Police resolved up to five reports of missing people, Ruidoso spokeswoman Darlene Hart said. The weekend flooding, caused by the remnants of Hurricane Dolly, claimed the life of one man, a 20-year-old whose body was found Monday (AP)."

Volcano spews ash in Montserrat

SAN JUAN - A dome over the crater of Montserrat's volcano has partially collapsed, spewing ash an estimated 40,000 feet into the Caribbean sky, scientists said yesterday. No one was injured, but residents were temporarily evacuated late Monday as a precaution, said Roderick Stewart, director of the Montserrat Volcano Observatory. The collapse sent bursts of volcanic material sweeping into the abandoned former capital of Plymouth, which was buried in a 1997 eruption that killed 19 people. Stewart said the dome is expected to crumble further, leading to more explosions and lava flows (AP)."

"Ice sheet breaks off in Canadian Arctic

EDMONTON, Alberta - A chunk of ice measuring 7 square miles has broken off a Canadian ice shelf in the Arctic, scientists said yesterday. Derek Mueller, a researcher at Trent University, was careful not to blame global warming, but said the event was consistent with the theory that the current Arctic climate isn't rebuilding ice sheets. Mueller said the sheet broke away last week from the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf off the north coast of Ellesmere Island in Canada's far north. The sheet is the biggest piece shed by one of Canada's six ice shelves since the Ayles shelf broke loose in 2005 from Ellesmere, 500 miles from the North Pole (AP)."

Yeah, he
should be careful (and the paper is lying again).

Maybe it was the
underwater volcanoes.

Of course, all those problems can't be serious since they are only briefs and we are treated to such shit in the BG's pages.

Nothing like a smokescreen -- literally -- as George W. Bush leaves and the country burns down.

"Highway shut down as Calif. fire rages; 12 miles away, Yosemite open" by Garance Burke, Associated Press | July 30, 2008

MARIPOSA, Calif. - Authorities shut down a major highway yesterday, keeping most travelers far from the west entrance to Yosemite National Park so crews could battle a huge wildfire raging close to thousands of nearby homes.

Authorities said the blaze in a steep, dry river canyon had destroyed 25 homes and had forced the evacuation of 300 others in the Sierra Nevada foothill towns of Midpines and Coulterville.

An area of more than 46 square miles of rugged terrain had burned since a target shooter sparked the wildfire on Friday. The fire was just 15 percent contained by midday yesterday.

Flames were about 12 miles from Yosemite National Park, which remained open and teeming with visitors. Flames also threatened homes in Montana, where authorities warned yesterday that more evacuations were likely.

Power has been out since Saturday in the park and in the outlying community of El Portal on the park's western boundary. Hotels in the area remained open, operating on generators.

Elsewhere, fire officials at Red Lodge, Mont., said yesterday that evacuation of an additional 200 homes west of the ski resort town was likely because strong wind threatened to push a wildfire closer to the area.

"When we come to tell you to leave, you need to leave," Red Lodge Fire Chief Tom Kuntz told the 600 to 700 people who attended a meeting yesterday morning."

And Sig Heil smartly, will you?

Why do I feel the newspapers are mimicking television more and more?

Is that why the paper is even worse than a year ago?
