BAGHDAD: Dozens of suspected Shiite fighters ambushed a U.S. patrol Tuesday in Baghdad, firing rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns from rooftops and alleys in the militia stronghold of Sadr City.

Ambush is a great term.

The Americans responded by firing 90 kilogram (200 pound) guided rockets, the U.S. military said, as more than 30 people were killed and dozens wounded in clashes in the sprawling district.

Three houses in the densely packed district were devastated and officials at two local hospitals said about 25 people had died, with several dozen wounded.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to release the information, said most of the victims were civilians.

Associated Press photos showed men pulling the limp body of 2-year-old Ali Hussein, covered in dust, from the rubble.

Clashes that broke out last month in Sadr City have intensified since radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr reiterated his threat of an all-out war against U.S.-led forces and American troops have found themselves facing some of the most intense urban warfare in years.

"We are seeing larger groups of militants actually aggressively attacking Iraqi and U.S. security forces," said Lt. Col. Steve Stover, a military spokesman for American troops in Baghdad. "We've seen more of the brazen attacks in the daytime recently."

Translation: Surge succeeded.

U.S. troops often have fought fierce gunbattles as they cleared neighborhoods in Baghdad and in former insurgent strongholds such as Anbar and Diyala. But roadside bombings and rocket or mortar volleys against bases have been the more frequent mode of attack in recent years.

The street fighting that began in late March in Sadr City is more reminiscent of the battles of 2004 when U.S. troops fought extremists to a standstill in separate operations against Shiite militiamen in Najaf and al-Qaida in Iraq-led insurgents in Fallujah.

Tuesday's clashes broke out at 9:30 a.m. after U.S. soldiers in heavily armored Stryker vehicles and tanks were attacked with rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns, prompting them to call for reinforcements. As the troops were leaving the area, a vehicle was hit with two roadside bombs, Stover said, adding that six American soldiers were wounded.

U.S. forces targeted gunmen in the area with rockets fired from a guided multiple-launch rocket system, which fires high-explosive warheads. Stover said 28 extremists were killed.

Officials at two local hospitals, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information, said about 25 people had died, with several dozen wounded — most civilians.

U.S. officials said all precautions are taken to prevent civilian casualties but blamed the militiamen for taking cover among their neighbors and families.

The showdown between the Iraqi government and al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militia has increasingly drawn U.S. forces into battle.

Tuesday's attack occurred along a road on which the U.S. military is putting up a concrete barrier to try to cut off the militants' ability to move freely into the rest of Baghdad and hamper their ability to fire rockets and mortars at the heavily fortified Green Zone that houses Iraq's government and many foreign embassies.

AP Television News footage showed children running for cover behind blast walls amid gunshots. Men helped carry several blood-soaked injured people onto stretchers to a local emergency hospital. Outside the hospital, the dead were placed inside plain wooden coffins.

Also in Baghdad, a senior government official was killed in a roadside bombing in the north of the city.

Dhia Jodi Jaber, director general at the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, was hit by a roadside bomb as he left his home on Tuesday morning, the ministry's spokesman Abdullah al-Lami said.

Insurgents frequently target governmental officials and institutions in a bid to disrupt the government's work.

Many hospitals in Iraq lack the most basic supplies: monitors, breathing tubes, bed sheets. Sterile conditions are nonexistent. In the burn ward at Yarmuk Hospital, a large general hospital in Baghdad, the nurses have no gowns or masks. Because of a high infection rate, many burn patients die soon after being admitted.

Marc, I feel for you! I'm going through the same with my blogger account. Steve of Desert Peace had the same experience as well. I have a blog that is pretty popular http://peacepalestine.blogspot.com and they sent me the same letter. I've hounded them to get to this, people have written letters, all to no avail. It's been a month now. I've been targeted both by Zionists and a weird group of self-styled "Anti-Zionist Marxist Jews"(and some are simply self-styled "progressive Jews" who nevertheless support Israel... Well, there have been some vicissitudes with it all, which I've documented, as well as other people. I decided that it's not worth it to stick with them, so went into the new blog and that's that. A load of people helped me save content, and that helped very much.

I ended up opening a new blog on Wordpress http://peacepalestine.wordpress.com and hopefully you can open a site with your same name, just change the server, so save all your material, make a mirror site, and hope for the best. YOU CAN STILL TAMPER WITH YOUR TEMPLATE at blogger, so announce your move so people can update their bookmarks. The more time you are "down" the more readers you will disorient.

By the way, them doing this to you proves you are doing good work. Chin up and don't let them get the best of you!!!!

The US, which has 150,000 troops in Iraq, is not a threat. The US troops are protecting Iraq from Iran, al Qaeda, and the Taliban. Just ask Fox "News."

Doing its part to egg on war with Iran, the US TV news program, "60 Minutes," gave air time to the commander of the Israeli Air Force, General Eliezer Shkedi, who declared in a special interview that Iranian president Ahmadinejad was the new Hitler and that we must not again make the mistake of disbelieving a Hitler.

There are better candidates for the role than Ahmadinejad.

Gen. Shkedi himself sounds like Hitler blaming Poland for the outbreak of the Second World War. Ahmadinejad has attacked no country, whereas Israel repeatedly invades its neighbors and continues 40-year occupations of Syrian and Palestinian territory.

As Noam Chomsky has written, the US government thinks that it owns the world (Chomsky could have added that Israel thinks it owns the Middle East and America). Americans can wallow in indignation over China's occupation of Tibet, but be perfectly content with America's occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. Israel can wax eloquently about "Palestinian terrorism" while its military and Zionist settlers terrorize Palestinians.

Americans see no hypocrisy in "their" government's damning of Russia for opposing the incorporation of former Russian satellites and constituent parts in a US military alliance.

Americans see manifest destiny, not US aggression, when "their" government drops bombs on Serbia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan, and Pakistan. Americans do not think it is aggression for them to develop war plans to attack Iran or China or N. Korea or whomever, or to maintain hundreds of military bases all over the globe. The same Americans work themselves into hysterical frenzies over "Iranian influence in Iraq" and "al Qaeda plans to bring the war to America."

As Chomsky says, we own the world. No one else counts.

Israel counts so much that every presidential candidate has declared his and her willingness to expend whatever American blood and treasure are necessary "to protect Israel." There are no limits on the promise "to defend Israel," no matter what Israel does, no matter if Israel initiates (yet again) war with its neighbors, no matter if it continues to force Palestinians out of their homes and villages in order to "create living room" for Israelis.

With this sort of promise, why should Israel ever settle for anything less than "Greater Israel"?

Just as the US government launched its illegal invasion of Iraq on the back of lies about weapons of mass destruction and mushroom clouds, the US government claims it must attack Iran or Iran will build a nuclear weapon. The Bush Regime has learned never to discard a lie as long as it works.

The lie works for the US Congress, the US media and much of the US public, but it is breaking down abroad. On April 27 the British newspaper, the Independent, responded to the recent US government claim that the Syrian facility attacked last September by Israel in an act of naked aggression was a nuclear reactor built by N. Korea:

"There is no independent way to verify any of this, especially since the installation has now been destroyed. We must rely on the integrity of the Israeli and US intelligence. That is where we hit a problem. The former US Secretary of State Colin Powell presented similar evidence to the United Nations Security Council in February 2003 showing what we were told was strong evidence of Iraqi storage of weapons of mass destruction. On April 27 McClatchy Newspapers reported that 50 Iraqi political leaders representing numerous political groups including Sunnis went to Sadr City to protest the siege by the US military. Why is al Sadr under siege? He called for a halt to bloodshed between Iraqis, for a "liberation of ourselves and our lands from the occupier," for "a real government and real sovereignty." However, for the Bush Regime, rhetoric about "freedom and democracy" is but a mask behind which to impose a US puppet government. Real Iraqi leaders like al Sadr are "terrorists" who must be eliminated.

Why do the American people and "their" representatives in Congress continue to tolerate a criminal Bush Regime that uses lies and propaganda to mask its acts of naked aggression, war crimes under the Nuremberg standard?

Why does the rest of the world continue to receive political representatives from a war criminal government?

What if the rest of the world told the US to close its bases, its embassies, its CIA operations and to go home?

Self-righteous Americans would regard such demands as effrontery! We own the world."

NEW YORK (AP) -- A wall-mounted gadget designed to drive away loiterers with a shrill, piercing noise audible only to teens and young adults is infuriating civil liberties groups and tormenting young people after being introduced into the United States.

Almost 1,000 units of the device, called the Mosquito, have been sold in the United States and Canada after the product debuted last year, according to Daniel Santell, the North America importer of the device sold under the company name Kids Be Gone.

The high-frequency sound has been likened to fingernails dragged across a chalkboard or a pesky mosquito buzzing in your ear. It can be heard by most people in their teens and early 20s who still have sensitive hair cells in their inner ears. Whether you can hear the noise depends on how much your hearing has deteriorated: How loud you blast your iPod, for example, could affect your ability to detect it.

"It's horrible, loud and irritating," said Eddie Holder, 15, who sprinted from his apartment for school one morning covering one ear with his hand to block out the noise. The device was installed outside the building to drive away loiterers. "I have to hurry out of the building because it's so annoying. It's this screeching sound that you have to get away from or it will drive you crazy."

Santell said the noise can be heard by animals and babies but is bothersome only to children older than 12 and becomes unbearable after several minutes, making it a perfect teen-repellent. The same sound is used as a cell phone ring tone by deaf adults and is a popular download on the Internet.

So the people who are going to profit of this totalitarian device assure you it is safe for babies and animals.

Like the FDA assures drugs and food aren't harmful to us.

The town of Great Barrington, Massachusetts, banned the device last year after a movie theater owner installed one.

"There was an outcry, and people didn't like the idea of torturing kids' ears like that," said Ronald Dlugosz, a town official. "People here don't tolerate that kind of stuff."

Milford, Connecticut, faced similar resistance when the city announced plans to install the Mosquito in a park. It increased police patrols instead.

Elsewhere, there have been few or no complaints. A mall in Maryland announced plans to introduce the buzz to disperse skateboarders, and officials and police said they haven't had any outcry. A school district in Columbia, South Carolina, recently installed one on the grille of a school vehicle and another in a parking lot where students gather after high school games, with no complaints.

Yeah, you wouldn't want kids hanging out skateboarding or talking in a parking lot.

That affects adults?

Carmen Ramirez, superintendent of the New York apartment building where Eddie Holder lives, described it as "a miracle."

"We used to have young men here all of the time, bothering people in the building and doing illegal things," said Ramirez, 50. "As soon as we put it up, they were gone, and they haven't been back. If they return, we'll just put up more."

A spokesman for the American Civil Liberties Union said the organization does not have a position on the issue. But James Alan Fox, a criminologist at Boston's Northeastern University, said that putting crowd-monitoring devices in the hands of private businesses and citizens is "dangerous."

"There is a significant problem with giving people a tool like this and empowering the public to take over the tasks of law enforcement," Fox said. "It can certainly be used in a way that's inappropriate, and without a doubt, it will be."

Nobody at Holder's apartment building could say where the loitering kids had gone after the Mosquito was installed.

"I just deal with it, but I can't be around here for too long," Holder said. "If I am going to stand around somewhere, it won't be here."

Nothing more profoundly and disturbingly symbolizes America's subtle racist double standard than George Stephanopoulos's question during the Philadelphia debate to Barack Obama: "Do you think Reverend Wright loves America as much as you do?"

We have all these right wing "God is destroying America because it has sinned" preachers running around with barely a question asked of the Republicans they back. Yes, Hagee, Robertson, the late Jerry Falwell, and countless other religious leaders of the fundamentalist cloth have delivered countless white versions of "God Damns America" statements. The only difference is that they don't "say it black" in black churches, and then see it looped endlessly around on FOX TV and other cable networks, not to say rerun again and again on talk radio.

The point that appears to be forgotten here is that Rev. Wright is not running for president. Barack Obama is.

As Wright takes a valedictory tour to take advantage of a national platform that has been offered to him by a media tinderbox filled with the kindling wood of race, the question remains as to why this is still front page news. Whether Wright is preaching the gospel and indignation to a media that can't get enough of this sidebar story because race sells only second to sex as far as spiking up ratings -- or whether he is just on an ego trip -- the point to ask is why this is a front page story at all.

The Washington Post, the New York Times, and most of the mainstream media have buried the lies, broken laws, torture, Iraq War malfeasance, incompetence, cronyism, etc., of the Bush Administration for the most part in the back pages of the newspapers (if printed at all) -- and generally kept it off of television news altogether; but it can't get enough of whether the former minister of a presidential candidate -- who served his nation in the Marines by the way -- "loves America."

Is this a joke?

No it's the "Made in America" racial double standard at work.

It's as racist as "nailing" Barack Obama for not wearing a flag pin, even though George and Charlie and Hillary weren't wearing flag pins at the Philadelphia debate -- and McCain is not asked why he frequently doesn't wear one. The double standard on the flag pin is so glaring that most Americans can't see it in front of their own eyes; one need only look at the television screen to see that Barack Obama is not the only candidate or television moderator not wearing the Bush Administration symbol of patriotism reduced to the size of a miniature piece of tin.

Yes, it's the old "black people have to prove themselves more than white people" thing rising to a full fever pitch. It's the media and America answering Barack Obama's challenge to confront our racist past during his dazzling speech in Philadelphia.

Unfortunately, the response by the media, other politicians in the race, and commentators has been, "not so fast, Barack -- we aren't finished with the racial double standard just yet."

We wish Rev. Wright a pleasant retirement, but we really don't know what his relevance is to the severe crises facing America. No white candidate, including Bush and McCain, has been so hammered about such an irrelevancy, considering the kooky religious figures that they have backing them.

That kind of scrutiny we reserve for a black man.

In case anyone needs to be reminded about the history of racial injustice in America, we encourage you to most appropriately watch and listen to the incomparable Nina Simone singing, "Mississippi Goddam."

It's been the goal of the Clinton campaign to prove that Obama can't transcend the reality of his being a black man in a nation that is still looking for a "Great White Hope."

The re-emergence of Rev. Wright as a national news story when we have Bush and Cheney preparing to possibly bomb Iran and Senator Clinton threatening to "obliterate" the same nation, not to mention a three trillion dollar debt, the destruction of our environment, the loss of jobs to overseas slave-labor nations, and the nearing of a tipping point in our dependency on oil -- well all this re-emphasizes that Clinton may be right: we are still stuck in the gutter of our baser instincts and anyone who wants to appeal to our better selves is in for a rude awakening."

Two other people were killed in the strike on the house. One was a boy passing by, on his way to school. The seventh person killed was a member of Islamic Jihad. Four children, aged one to five, their mother and a Palestinian gunman were killed during Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip on Monday, Palestinian emergency services said. Mussab Abu Maateq, one, Hana Abu Maateq, three, Rudeina Abu Maateq, four, and Saleh Abu Maateq, five, were killed along with their mother when a tank shell hit their home in Beit Hanun, doctors at the Kamal Radwan hospital said. An armed man was killed in an exchange of fire with Israeli troops in the same area, the medics added.

"4 US soldiers killed by rocket fire in Iraq"

BAGHDAD - Four US soldiers were killed in two rocket attacks in Baghdad yesterday as clashes between US-backed Iraqi forces and Shi'ite militiamen intensified, the military said.

Three soldiers were killed about 1 p.m. in eastern Baghdad, where fighters loyal to anti-American Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr have battled US and Iraqi troops. The fourth American soldier was killed at 4:15 p.m. in the western part of the capital, a US military spokesman said. The military provided few other details about the attacks.

The deaths marked one of the deadliest days for US troops in Iraq since Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki launched an offensive against Shi'ite militias in the southern city of Basra in late March, prompting retaliation there and in the vast Shi'ite district of Sadr City in Baghdad. Forty-four US troops have died in Iraq in April, according to iCasualties.org, which tracks military fatalities, more than any month since September.

Also yesterday, militiamen launched a mortar and rocket attack against a combat outpost in Sadr City shortly after several top military officials, including Brigadier General William F. Grimsley, had visited. Fifteen US soldiers were injured in the attack, none seriously, said Lieutenant Colonel Steve Stover, a US military spokesman.

"We will continue fighting to get a safe environment and neighborhood for the citizens of Sadr City," Grimsley told reporters during his visit to the outpost.

Elsewhere, US soldiers aboard helicopters and an Abrams tank killed at least seven people in eastern Baghdad yesterday, the US military said.

US soldiers came under small-arms attack shortly after 3 p.m. and responded by firing a Hellfire missile, which killed at least four people, and a round from an Abrams tank that killed three additional people, the military said.

"I don't know what's going through the enemy's mind when they're firing at Abrams tanks," Stover said. "The soldiers have a right to protect themselves."

US officials say they are fighting bands of Iranian-backed militias that are ignoring a cease-fire order issued by Sadr last year. The cleric has in recent weeks issued statements saying his followers are being indiscriminately targeted by US-backed Iraqi forces. He has threatened to wage an "open war" and assailed the presence of US troops in Iraq, but has stopped short of lifting the cease-fire outright.

Also yesterday, US soldiers said they killed 10 suspected Sunni insurgents in five operations near Baghdad, the military said in a statement.

The clashes in Sadr City, which is home to nearly 3 million people, have exposed residents to nearly daily fighting, sharply limited their mobility and made food and medical supplies scarce, according to aid organizations.

President Jalal Talabani met yesterday with the speaker of the Iraqi parliament and political leaders of Sadr's movement to discuss the situation, the president's office said in a statement.
