Eleven years after the publication of her best-selling Holocaust memoir - a heartwarming tale of a small Jewish girl trekking across Europe and living with wolves - the Massachusetts author yesterday admitted the whole story was a hoax.

In a statement issued by her Belgian lawyer, Misha Defonseca of Dudley, whose book, "Misha: A Memoire of the Holocaust Years," has been translated into 18 languages and is the basis for a new French movie, "Survivre avec les Loups" ("Surviving With the Wolves"), confessed that she is not Jewish and that she spent the war safely in Brussels.

The 1997 book was the center of a multimillion-dollar legal battle pitting Defonseca and her coauthor, Vera Lee of Newton, against publisher Jane Daniel of Gloucester. The book was a bestseller in Europe and Canada, and attracted attention from Walt Disney Co. and Oprah Winfrey, but it sold few copies in the United States, largely because the marketing stopped after the authors sued.

So Oprah was going to hawk ANOTHER BOOK full of Zionist lies, 'eh?

Daniel's imprint, Mt. Ivy Press, was a one-woman operation when she met Defonseca in the mid-1990s, heard her story, and suggested that she write a book. In 2001, a Middlesex Superior Court jury issued a $7.5 million breach-of-contract judgment against Daniel after Defonseca and Lee alleged that she had failed to publicize the book as promised and had hidden profits. The judge in the case tripled the damages to $22.5 million, and an appeals court upheld the verdict in 2005.

Yesterday's confession follows a week of intense publicity in French and Belgian media...

prompted by disclosure of documents unearthed by Waltham-based genealogical researcher Sharon Sergeant showing that Monique De Wael (Defonseca's real maiden name) was baptized in a Brussels Catholic church in September 1937 and that she was enrolled in a Brussels primary school in 1943-44. The researcher also discovered that Defonseca's parents, Robert and Josephine De Wael, were members of the Belgian resistance and were arrested and executed by the Nazis.

In her statement, approximately translated from the French, Defonseca said: "Yes, my name is Monique De Wael, but I have wanted to forget it since I was 4 years old. My parents were arrested and I was taken in by my grandfather, Ernest De Wael, and my uncle, Maurice De Wael. I was called 'daughter of a traitor' because my father was suspected of having spoken under torture in the prison of Saint-Gilles. Ever since I can remember, I felt Jewish. . . . There are times when I find it difficult to differentiate between reality and my inner world. The story in the book is mine. It is not the actual reality - it was my reality, my way of surviving. At first, I did not want to publish it, but then I was convinced by Jane Daniel. I ask forgiveness from all those who feel betrayed."

Over the next four years she wanders alone across Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Romania, Yugoslavia, across the Adriatic Sea by boat to Italy, then through Italy across the Alps to France and back to Belgium. Along the way, she is sheltered by packs of wolves, kills a German soldier, witnesses an eastbound freight train full of Jews, wanders into the Warsaw Ghetto, and escapes. A 2001 story in The Boston Globe raised questions about the book's veracity, but Defonseca insisted that it was all true.

A spokeswoman for Vera Belmont, the French director of "Survivre avec les Loups," said in an e-mail: "Vera is not making any comment. Her movie is a fiction from the book. No matter if it's true or not - she believes it is, anyway - she just thinks it's a beautiful story."

TOLEDO, Ohio - Cranking up their populist rhetoric, Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are outbidding each other as they attack NAFTA before their showdown in Ohio's Democratic presidential primary Tuesday.

Both have threatened to withdraw from the 14-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement if Mexico and Canada refuse to negotiate changes, and both have ramped up their criticism of trade with China, saying investors in the global economy have profited at the expense of American workers.

The reason American trade policy has suddenly moved to the center of the Democratic contest is clear - it plays in Ohio and other Midwestern states, where many voters blame NAFTA and other trade agreements for the loss of manufacturing jobs - 231,200 in Ohio in the past seven years. Some Democrats believe trade will be an issue with at least strong regional appeal in the general election against Senator John McCain, a Republican who ardently supports so-called free trade agreements.

But opting out of NAFTA or even amending the agreement would be foolhardy, unrealistic, or at least very difficult, according to several trade policy analysts who span the political spectrum.

Which is why the American public didn't want it in the first place!

"They're kind of snookering the voters . . . throwing out a false hope," said Alfred E. Eckes, the Ohio Eminent Research Professor in Contemporary History at Ohio University and the author and editor of several books about US trade policy.

"I can't imagine anybody seriously trying to renegotiate NAFTA. It would just reopen a can of worms," said Eckes, who served as a member of the US International Trade Commission, from 1981 to 1990, during the Reagan and George H. W. Bush administrations. Canada and Mexico have their own concerns about the agreement, he said, noting that Mexico has lost agricultural jobs because of American corn imports.

Prolabor economists remain critical of NAFTA, but agree it would be tricky to tamper with.

"Yes, there's a reason to amend NAFTA; it hasn't worked well in any of the three countries," said Robert E. Scott, a senior economist at the Economic Policy Institute, a think tank funded in part by American labor unions.

But Scott said that in any renegotiation, Mexico might inject itself into the immigration debate by seeking rights, such as a path to legalization, for Mexican workers now in the United States illegally. Canada would almost certainly seek concessions on timber and agricultural issues, he said.

Free trade proponents see NAFTA as an unmitigated boon.

"Doing away with NAFTA would be disastrous for the United States; it would probably plunge us into a recession and certainly slow our growth rate," said Richard "Terry" Miller, director of the Center for International Trade and Economics at The Heritage Foundation, a think tank that advocates free enterprise.

"From our point of view, NAFTA has been an unqualified success," said Miller, a former State Department official and ambassador to the UN Economic and Social Council under the current President Bush. He cited gains in US employment, manufacturing output, average real compensation, and investment in all sectors compared with the period before NAFTA. The loss of manufacturing jobs results more from improved productivity and technology than trade, Miller asserted.

But Miller would have trouble convincing many residents of Toledo and other industrial cities in Ohio of the benefits of liberalized trade.

State Representative Peter Ujvagi, Democrat of East Toledo, has seen the region suffer through many plant closings, especially automobile and parts makers, and the resulting loss of jobs has affected many labor union members.

A huge Ford stamping plant shut down in the Toledo suburb of Maumee last fall, Chrysler eliminated the third shift at its Toledo Jeep Assembly complex early this month, and the supplier that makes seats for Jeep Wranglers in nearby Northwood announced two weeks ago it will outsource that work to a company in India.

"Some statistics say that Ohio has had a net gain of jobs under NAFTA, but I don't think we've had a net gain in wealth or earning power," Ujvagi said.

The current economic downturn has hammered Ohio, where unemployment is a percentage point above the national rate and the state ranked third last year in the number of foreclosures. Toledo and three other Ohio cities are among the top 20 in the United States in foreclosure rates in 2007.

If NAFTA is a bête noire in places like Toledo, it isn't in Texas, which has benefited and where trade has not been an issue.

She insists she always had misgivings about the pact, but the Obama onslaught has been relentless.

China, which accounts for more than a third of the $712 billion annual US trade deficit, exports cheap goods based in part on the artificially low value of its currency, the yuan, which is pegged to the value of the US dollar.

The Democratic candidates have criticized US trade policies with China as well.

At a Feb. 19 rally in Youngstown, Clinton blasted the Bush administration for the growing budget deficit and the national debt, which now exceeds $9 trillion, more than $1 trillion of which is owed to China.

Bush, she declared, "has signed a subprime mortgage on America's economic future. . . . And so when people ask me 'Why can't we get tough with China?,' well, when was the last time you got tough on your banker. . . . We play by the rules, they manipulate their currency. And we get tainted fish, lead-laced toys, and poisoned pet food in return."

ANKARA, Turkey - Turkish leaders resisted calls by Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates for a swift end to Turkey's offensive against Kurdish guerrillas yesterday, offering no timetable for withdrawing their troops from northern Iraq.

Gates came to the Turkish capital with a stern message that the Turkish winter offensive in the mountains of northern Iraq should wrap up within days. But after three hours of meetings with senior civilian and military leaders, Gates said he had received no assurances on when the Turkish offensive would be over.

In fact, Turkey's minister of defense, Vecdi Gonul, implied that because of "winter conditions," the progress of the Turkish military campaign to destroy the infrastructure of the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, could be slow.

Gates said he was still confident that Turkish leaders understood the principal concerns of Bush administration officials: that the offensive could be prolonged, bloody, and - ultimately - ineffective.

GAZA CITY - A bloody spike in Israel-Hamas fighting put the Israeli city of Ashkelon and its 110,000 residents at the center of an intensifying militant rocket barrage yesterday - and Israel's defense minister warned he would invade Gaza, if necessary, to halt the attacks.

Several Grad rockets slammed into Ashkelon, 11 miles north of Gaza, yesterday, including one that hit an apartment building, slicing through the roof and three floors below, and another that landed near a school, wounding a 17-year-old girl.

While more than two dozen rockets have hit the Ashkelon area in the past, most fell in open areas in the southern outskirts and did not cause damage. The latest round of rocket fire was the most intense, and police chief Uri Bar-Lev said yesterday that it was the first time a building in Ashkelon was hit. On Wednesday, a rocket exploded in the parking lot of Ashkelon's Barzilai Hospital.

In the past, the Israeli border town of Sderot, with about 20,000 residents, had been Hamas's main target. In recent years, hundreds of Qassams have hit Sderot, just a mile from Gaza, and on Wednesday an Israeli father of four was killed by a rocket that hit a Sderot community college.

So South Koreans were instantly leery when they learned that several of Lee's 15 nominees to be Cabinet ministers held large real estate portfolios, and that the average personal wealth of the would-be ministers was $4.1 million. The questions have caused several nominees to bow out and have embarrassed the new president just three days into the job.

"Big real estate portfolios may not be a big deal for a Western politician, but in [South] Korea it is seen as evidence of speculation and corruption," said Yang Sung Mook, an adviser to the opposition United Democratic Party.

"Missile Kills 8 in Pakistan Tribal Area"

"Eight suspected Islamic militants, including four men of Middle Eastern origin and two from Central Asia, were killed early Thursday in a triple missile attack on a house used as a training facility in Pakistan’s tribal areas, a security official and residents said.

The missiles appeared to have been launched from territory controlled by NATO forces across the border in Afghanistan, the second deadly aerial strike in a month. Residents said three other occupants of the house were wounded in the strike, in the village of Kalosha in South Waziristan, one of the most restive tribal regions.

The security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the nature of his job, said the dead had belonged to a little-known group affiliated with Al Qaeda, working under the name Abu Hamza.

Local residents said they had heard three loud explosions about 2 a.m. that destroyed the house. They said the three wounded occupants were from Turkmenistan.

They also said the house had belonged to Shero Wazir, an Ahmadzai Wazir tribesman who had rented it to an unidentified man of Arab nationality. They said they thought the launching site might have been an American NATO base in Machi Dat, just across the border in Afghanistan.

NATO officials in Afghanistan said they had no information about the attack. But this would not be the first time American-led NATO forces had launched missiles aimed at Qaeda and Taliban targets on the Pakistan side.

A senior Qaeda commander, Abu Laith al-Libi, was reportedly killed by a Predator missile in Mirali, North Waziristan, on Jan. 29. The Pakistan government has yet to officially confirm his death.

NEW YORK - For the first time in the nation's history, more than 1 in 100 American adults is behind bars, according to a new report.

Nationwide, the prison population grew by 25,000 last year, bringing it to almost 1.6 million. Another 723,000 people are in local jails....

Incarceration rates are even higher for some groups. One in 36 Hispanic adults is behind bars, based on Justice Department figures for 2006. One in 15 black adults is, too, as is 1 in 9 black men between the ages of 20 and 34.

The report, from the Pew Center on the States, also found that only 1 in 355 white women between the ages of 35 and 39 is behind bars, compared with 1 in 100 black women....

The report said, "prison costs are blowing a hole in state budgets." On average, states spend almost 7 percent of their budgets on corrections, trailing only healthcare, education, and transportation....

But we got plenty of money for wars!!!

With money from bond issues and from the federal government included, total state spending on corrections last year was $49 billion. By 2011, the report said, states are on track to spend an additional $25 billion....

About 1 in 9 state government employees works in corrections, and some states are finding it hard to fill those jobs....

My sleep was largely interrupted , last night so was my my daughter’s. The shooting was so heavy against different areas of the city , as well as different parts of the Gaza strip , the jet fighters sound was too loud as well as the helicopters sound.

This morning 28th of February it is disproportional open war , civilians pay the price , 15 people were killed , as an outcome of last night attack , including 3 months old baby !!!!!!!!!(1000 children were killed in the last 5 years alone )

On my way walking to the Red Crescent Society , (I do not have fuel in my car ), it is only 25 minutes , while walking , I can clearly hear successive explosions, from different parts of the city , and the drune on the sky , and also can clearly see the security forces soldiers, outside their headquarters , as it is under threat of bombing by the Israeli military forces , I had to walk very fast , expecting the worse.

Arriving my work to find out that we do not have enough fuel for the ambulance and the other work vehicles. No fuel entered Gaza since 17 days , our storage has been exhausted , oh my god this situation will have its disastrous impact on different health facilities .

Medical workers as always work under great pressure , and while I am trying to arrange for medical shipment entry to Gaza , donated by MECA , I endure living in such dangerous situation , and lack of electricity , we have scarce power 6- 8 hours daily at the moment ,fresh and clean pumped water is big problem for most residents of Gaza.

I feel fed up , exhausted and drained of talking about the same topics again and again , and things get worse and worse , so please understand me when i do not write .

Safety is my big concern at the moment as well as meeting medical facilities medications and medical supplies needs.

Justice and peace is my great goal , please spread the word."

"Israeli Democracy: Israel kills a baby, 9 children out of 33 victims in 24 hours!

One Palestinian has been killed and three others injured in a raid against a police station in the west of Gaza City. The station is located next to Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh’s house.

Dr. Mu’awiya Hassanain, head of emergency and ambulance services in the Palestinian Health Ministry, said that ambulances transferred the dead body and the casualties to a hospital in Gaza.

Four Palestinian children were killed in an Israeli air raid in the Jabalia refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip on Thursday afternoon, bringing the number of those killed in the Gaza Strip to 27 in the last 24 hours. Eight of the dead are children.

Hasanain said the bodies of 11-year-old Deib Darduna and 14-year-old ‘Umar Darduna arrived at the Kamal Udwan hospital in Beit Hanoun torn to pieces. Meanwhile, the bodies of 7-year-old Muhammad Hammuda and 8-year-old Ali Darduna were taken to Ash-Shifa hospital in Gaza City.

A short while later, an Israeli unmanned reconnaissance plane launched a missile at a car in Beit Hanoun injuring two people, one of them seriously.

Israeli raids on the Gaza Strip have been continuous throughout Thursday.

On Thursday afternoon Palestinian medics found the dead body of 12-year-old Amjad As-Sakani in eastern Gaza City.

Meanwhile 25-year-old Hamas activist Rami Khalifa died of wounds he sustained on Thursday morning.

Israeli warplanes launched a raid on Thursday afternoon on the northern Gaza Strip killing 23-year-old Al-Qassam Brigades member Abdullah Zuwaidi.

A few minutes later, the Israeli warplanes launched another raid near the agricultural college in Beit Hanoun in the northern Gaza Strip. Several Palestinians were injured in the attack.

At around 9:30 on Thursday morning local time, Israeli warplanes fired missiles at Palestinian civilians in eastern Gaza City killing senior Hamas leader and Palestinian Legislative Council member and Hamza Khalil Al-Hayya and 23-year-old Jawad Tafish. Several others were also injured.

Mu’awiya Hassanain, the director of ambulance and emergency services in the Palestinian health ministry told Ma’an that Ash-Shifa hospital in Gaza City had received one of the dead and several people who had sustained serious injuries.

On Wednesday evening, three Palestinian children were killed and six others injured in an Israeli air strike on the Al Taw’am area close to the Khazandar gas station, north of Gaza City. One of the dead was 5-month-old Muhammad Nasser Al-Borey, who was in his family home when a missile struck the building.

Mu’awiya Hassanain, said that ambulances transported the injured and dead children, including the headless body of a child, to the Shifa’ and Kamal hospitals.

He added that five children were rushed to the intensive care unit and the operating room, with one clinically dead.

Witnesses said that those involved were passing by a local-made missile launcher that was struck by the Israeli forces.

Earlier on Wednesday, two Palestinians were killed and two others injured when Israeli artillery targeted an orange grove in the Ash-Shuja’iyya neighbourhood in eastern Gaza City.

Hassanain said that one of the dead was identified as 27-year-old Minwir Abu Mandeel, who worked as a guard at the grove. The second victim’s identity remains unknown as the corpse arrived at the Kamal Udwan Hospital so badly damaged that it was not possible to identify the victim.

On Wednesday morning, five Al-Qassam Brigades activists were killed, and several bystanders were injured, after Israeli helicopters launched two missiles at a car in western Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip.

Eyewitnesses told Ma’an’s reporter that the car was targeted near Al-Aqsa University.

In another Israeli raid on Wednesday morning an Islamic Jihad activist was killed and two others injured when an Israeli unmanned drone targeted two sites east of Al-Bureij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip.

A spokesperson of the the Al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of Islamic Jihad, said that the victim was Zaky Abu Zaid. The wounded were evacuated to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital for treatment."

"The population of Gaza was about 1.5 million as of yesterday morning… there are 13 less this morning. Last night Israel murdered 13 Palestinians, mostly civilians, including the gorgeous baby in the photograph above. The child had a name, it was Muhammed Al-Bura’i. He was six months old. Israel felt the need to kill him as he might have been responsible for a Qassam rocket that was fired into Sderot killing an Israeli civilian.

Moments after the Qassam attack Israel filed a complaint with the United Nations … a report of that can be read HERE. Whether that complaint was filed before or after Israel’s attack is not known.

Thirteen Palestinians massacred, mostly civilians… on this, the eve of the Nakba…a catastrophe of 60 years ago… a catastrophe that continues to this day.

"The youth of Gaza are leading the way to a Free Palestine. It was they that organised and took part in the human chain around Gaza the other day. It is the youth of Gaza that have nothing! It is they that have nothing to lose and everything to gain by fighting for a Freedom that none have experienced in their lifetime. These young people are the third generation born under the most brutal occupation in recent history, an occupation that so far has cost them their childhood, their future and their lives.

They are fed up… they are frustrated… they are angry! Angry at the Israeli for occupying their land, angry at the Egyptian for allowing this to happen, angry at the world for keeping silent…

Ramy is a spokesman for the Popular Committee Against the Siege, which organised the human chain in Gaza.

Ramy says the action highlighted humanitarian concerns

Our human chain stretched from Beit Hanoun in the north of Gaza down to Rafa in the south. There was wide participation - thousands of people turned up.

We urge the international community to put more pressure on the Israelis to end the siege of Gaza.

Life here is getting worse. People are suffering and we are asking Israel and the international community not to push us to breaking point.

If the Israelis are really so afraid, why are they pushing us into a worse place? Let the medicine and the food into Gaza.

We want people to take part in our actions and to do it in a civilised, peaceful way. If they stay at home, no-one will see them.

We are an independent committee, we did not organise this with Hamas.

Of course, Hamas would be one of the beneficiaries of the lifting of the siege - and they were among the many people in the chain. We welcomed them and everyone else.

The siege does not target specific people, everyone suffers.

If you jail a prisoner you at least give him food. We are not talking about the politics of it all, just the violation of our basic humanitarian needs.

And if people outside keep silent about it, they are taking part in it too.

SAMEH HABEED, 22, GAZA CITY

I joined the chain for about 15 minutes. I work full time so could not stay longer. It was peaceful and there was no violence.

I got a scholarship to study in Italy last year, but I couldn’t leave because the borders were closed

It was very crowded and there were lots of journalists and film crews too.

Groups of children were hurrying with their teachers to head north, to start the chain in Beit Hanoun.

People are very angry about the siege and how it’s affecting us.

I saw people from Fatah, from Hamas, from the Popular Front, people forgot their different groups for a time.

The organisers are not hardline Hamas - they talk to Israeli groups and media.

The siege has affected me enormously. I got a scholarship to study in Italy last year, but I couldn’t leave because the borders were closed.

I now have an invitation to represent Palestine in Canada later this year, at a forum for young journalists in Quebec.

I have to go to Egypt for my interview, but I’m worried I will lose it, as I lost my chance in Italy.

IBTASAM, GAZA CITY

I didn’t go to the demonstration. I cannot afford to be political, because my work [in a multinational NGO] means I must be impartial.

The people who called for this human chain are actually neutral, but of course Hamas support them because they want the IDF (Israel Defence Forces) and the Israelis to lift the siege too.

The current political agenda is not helping the situation.

It cannot work with just Fatah, or just Hamas. We need unity. Our leaders should start leading all of us.

Closing the Rafah border has affected people badly. Students cannot go to university, patients cannot travel for treatment. There’s very little petrol.

We rely on all sorts of goods coming from Israel - which no longer arrive. The Israelis decide what can and cannot come through.

I work in health care. Clinics lack basic medicine for core diseases and conditions - like high blood pressure.

People have to store medicines in the fridge - and then the electricity cuts out.

Patients are dying because they cannot leave Gaza for treatment.

There is a shortage of stationery. There is no printing paper available in the markets, so schools are using old textbooks and notebooks.

My son is nine years old, he has to do his homework on a blackboard."
