The Boston Globe's Mixed Messages on Sex

That is the ONLY EXCUSE for the coverage AND the WRITING STYLE -- because IT SUCKS!!!!

I'm left to believe that the Boston Globe HATES CHILDREN, folks!!!!

"Beverly Horribles parade prompts outcry in Gloucester" by David Abel, Globe Staff | July 8, 2008

There was a fire engine, a small army of children on bicycles, a marching band, and lots of red, white, and blue to celebrate the nation's birthday.

Then came the surprise floats at the annual July Fourth Horribles parade in Beverly, which has sparked outrage in neighboring Gloucester.

There were young men in diapers emerging from a female dummy's open legs, condoms raining on preteen spectators, and a truck that simulated a part of the male anatomy and carried the mocking message: "Knock 'em up high where expectations are low, Gloucester, MA."

The parade, known for more than a century for its biting satire about current affairs, left few residents laughing yesterday in Gloucester, which made international headlines last month when the high school's principal told Time magazine that some of the 17 students who became pregnant this school year did so as part of a pact.

"It's a disgrace. It's terrible. They have no class," said Joe Tumbiolo, 46, who said he has lived in Gloucester nearly all his life.

Drinking beside him at the Old Timer's Tavern in Gloucester, Marc Andrew, a 50-year-old landscaper, warned Beverly to "take care of their own."

"They don't have to slander our town," he said. "I think that they should watch what they're saying, because it may come back to haunt them."

Three of the parade's floats, which were decorated with dolls and balloons, featured signs such as "GHS girls went to band camps [and] came back pregnant tramps."

Oh, I am ANGRY!!!!!!

What ASSHOLES "liberal" Massachusetts is filled with!!!

Truly, what FUCKING JERK-OFFS!!!!

You wanna see a skank, go here and LAY OFF the PRECIOUS YOUNG LADIES!!!!

Others were too graphic to print.

Yeah, but my blog is flagged for LANGUAGE!!!!!

Thanks a lot, Massachusetts scum!!!!

While the truck with the male anatomy display won second place for creativity, the floats also sparked ire in Beverly, where several parade judges resigned in protest.

The PERVERT PENIS FLOAT WON 2nd-place?

WHO the FUCK where the judges?! WTF?!

And at least there are SOME GOOD PEOPLE in Beverly!

Alison Weingartner, a member of the committee that organized the parade, said she was not happy that she had to explain to her 9-year-old son what the floats were all about.

"I think they went over the line," Weingartner said. "The parade is meant to poke fun at things, but with intelligence. These floats weren't terribly creative."

She tried to pass off the condoms as facial wipes, but when her son and other children opened the packages, she had some explaining to do.

"He said he thought babies came from a baby store," she said. "This wasn't right. There have to be some parameters."

Maybe the TRUTH would work once?

Mayor William F. Scanlon Jr. of Beverly said the city had nothing to do with organizing the parade, but he declined to say whether officials would take any action.

"I'm sorry if anyone in Gloucester's feelings were hurt," Scanlon said, "and I'm sure there will be a lot of debate about this."

Marilyn Virgilio did not see the now-ubiquitous YouTube video, which features, from the parade, young women in pigtails gyrating and rubbing their pillow-filled maternity dresses and young men riding a tandem bicycle in diapers and baby caps.

But the founder of Virgilio's Bakery on Main Street has heard everyone talking about it.

"It's awful, not right at all," she said.

Leanna Carpenter, who graduated from Gloucester High School in 1996, was disgusted.

"I would be absolutely appalled if I had to explain to children what that was all about," said Carpenter, 30, a waitress at Valentino's Pizza.

"I mean, show a little tact," Carpenter suggested. "It's very sad and scary what's going on here. They shouldn't make fun of it."

"They went beyond the ridiculous," said Paul Anderson, 62, of Gloucester. "I can see making fun of the situation, but they really went overboard."

At the Crow's Nest, a bar made famous by the book and the movie "The Perfect Storm," Jack Little just shook his head.

"It was beyond poor taste, beyond the bounds of propriety," he said as a row of grizzled and tattooed men in the Crow's Nest agreed with him."

FALL RIVER - As an older city striving for revitalization, Fall River has some valuable assets.

It has a 500-acre industrial park, which has attracted manufacturers, warehouses, and corporate offices. The state has promised to build a $70 million interchange on Route 24 to improve access to the park.

Five miles south, the city's historic Taunton River waterfront and the Battleship Cove tourist attraction have gotten a boost with a new boardwalk. And plans are moving forward for a commuter rail station nearby, as well as relocation of state Route 79, which cuts across the district.

But these prime locations have been targeted by businesses that local leaders want no part of: strip clubs.

The owner of Oliver's nightclub at the entrance to the industrial park is locked in a long-running legal struggle with the city for the right to feature nude dancing. Earlier this year, two clubs near the waterfront, the Regatta, next to Fall River's Heritage State Park, and Davol Street Station applied for nude-dancing licenses, though Davol Street Station has since dropped its request. Less than two miles south and east of the historic district, a Swansea businessman is fighting with the city for a nude-dancing license for a club that would be located in an industrial building in a business zone.

Economic development officials worry that the establishments could derail Fall River's revitalization efforts.

"I think it's a disaster," said Stephen C. Smith, executive director of the Southeastern Regional Planning and Economic Development District, the Taunton-based regional planning agency for the south coastal region. "I am trying to plan the development of a train station integrated with new waterfront development and a redesigned highway and there's this specter of a cluster of strip clubs in the heart of it."

Kenneth Fiola Jr., executive vice president of the Fall River Office of Economic Development, said businesses in the industrial park do not want a strip club at its entrance.

"Obviously, many of the businesses have invested millions of dollars in their properties," Fiola said. "The potential of having that kind of facility there is seen as a detriment."

Fall River does not have an official zone for adult entertainment, which has had the effect of opening almost all of the city to the potential siting of sexually oriented businesses. Courts have ruled that nude dancing is a protected form of free expression, and cities and towns cannot ban it completely. But the courts have allowed municipalities to use zoning to restrict adult businesses to specific areas. Many Massachusetts communities have established adult entertainment districts in remote and undesirable sections.

Prompted by the flurry of applications for nude-dancing licenses, Fall River officials are now considering establishing an adult entertainment district. City planning director James K. Hartnett said his office is studying the options, but a formal proposal, which would require City Council approval, is not imminent.

Whether strip clubs are harmful to economic development is a matter of some debate. They generate revenue and employment, and draw visitors to an area, but such clubs also clash with many people's sense of morality and spark concerns about attracting undesirable and dangerous elements of society.

Such a HANG-UP about SEX and LIFE, but BRING IN the CASINOS!!!!

AmeriKa is a SICK SOCIETY, folks!!!

Our VALUES are ALL WRONG!!!!!!

Judith Lynne Hanna, an anthropologist at the University of Maryland, said well-run strip clubs can be good for surrounding businesses and have helped some cities attract tourists and convention-goers.

"If you have a four-star upscale club, it is going to be an economic stimulus for other businesses. I've seen it all across the country," said Hanna.

Not everybody is Hugh Hefner, ma'am!!!!

Fall River planning director Hartnett said evidence he has seen indicates strip clubs harm business areas. He said most club customers view the establishments as destinations and they are unlikely to patronize other businesses.

Paul Viveros, owner of Oliver's, said the industrial park is the best place in the city for strip clubs. "No one lives in the industrial park," he said. "There are no schools or churches. For the most part it closes at 5 p.m."

Of the claim that a strip club will invite problems, Viveros said, "For the last hundred years there has never been a strip club in Fall River, and yet we already have drugs and crime and prostitution."

Oh, yeah, right, all that other stuff that is ALREADY THERE!!!!

Darrell West, a political scientist at Brown University, has surveyed attitudes toward adult entertainment in Providence. He found moral concerns outweigh economic issues for most people. Providence has almost a dozen clubs, the largest concentration in New England.

You would think they would be taking any business they could get at this point, but.... please don't cry to me about budget woes then!!!!

West said strip clubs have hurt the image of some sections of Providence and made it harder to attract other kinds of businesses to those areas. "It hasn't tarnished the image of the city as a whole," he added. "The Providence renaissance is alive and well."

And as the Globe waxes morality to you, consider the new school going up:

"Cut out for the beauty business; Elan Sassoon is ready to create an empire of his own, starting in Hub" by Jenn Abelson, Globe Staff | July 8, 2008

Yeah, it is O.K to SELL SEX and LOOK like a whore -- just don't put it a strip club in the town!!!

Sigh!

After losing a bid to buy the beauty business started by his father, the legendary hair stylist Vidal Sassoon, Elan Sassoon is now building his own empire in Boston.

The Academy for Hair and Skin by Elan Sassoon, a $22 million school near the Boston University campus, is expected to open next spring in a 90,000-square-foot facility with dormitories, the first of its kind in the country. It will offer training from international stylists in everything from hair history to hair etiquette.

Yup, all about the HAIR!

The beauty school will debut just months after Sassoon and Lord's & Lady's Hair Salon founder Michael Barsamian open a 3,000-square-foot high-end salon, Mizu, next to L'Espalier restaurant at the new luxury Mandarin Oriental hotel and condominium complex on Boylston Street. At Mizu - Japanese for "water" - haircuts and coloring will start at $125.

Pffft!

I won't be going there; a nice girl will do it for $12 down the corner!!!!

But as I've been learning, this whole thing is about serving the rich, isn't it?

Over the next year, the partners also plan to launch two new spa and salon businesses, Green Tangerine at Patriot Place in Foxborough and Legacy Place in Dedham, and they hope to launch a product line under Sassoon's name.

"It attracts a lot of attention, a lot of hairdressers want to be affiliated with that name. It's going to put all of us on the map," Barsamian said.

Hair pioneer Vidal Sassoon opened his first US salon in 1965 in Manhattan and was the first to cut hair in geometric shapes. He quickly became a powerful force in the industry and helped turn the craft into an enormous and lucrative business.

They are so full of their own VANITY, aren't they?

Three decades later, the younger Sassoon, at 38, is looking to capitalize on the latest boom in beauty, which is fueled in part by a growing number of hotels and health clubs offering more hair and skin services, and an increase in skin care treatments. Sassoon said he is trying to fill what he considers a major gap in beauty education across the industry. Other local cosmetology schools, including Elizabeth Grady, which graduates 200 students annually, say classes for massage, makeup, and skin care are at full capacity, and waiting lists grow each year. Over the past five years, the number of licensed cosmetologists and aestheticians in Massachusetts has increased 8 percent to about 2,750, according to the state division of professional licensure.

Sassoon's beauty school, the first of four planned around the country over the next several years, will feature 180 dorm beds, a 200-seat auditorium, and wind turbines and solar panels. Construction at the 1047 Commonwealth Ave. site is expected to start in August. The academy will offer licenses in skin care, hair, and nails, and mandate students take 1,500 hours of cosmetology training over nine months to graduate, instead of the 1,000 hours required for a state license. The tuition of about $19,500 makes it one of the most expensive such programs in the United States.

One wonders what would happen if that kind of $$$ was thrown into actual EDUCATION, huh?

"I wanted to do this in Boston because this is the city of education. Why not have the best hair school here, too?" said Sassoon, who previously developed and ran medical spas for Klinger Advanced Aesthetics in Miami. "This kind of education has never been done in cosmetology."

Yup, learning to cut hair is an "education."

Now look, I'm not knocking it, but STOP MORALIZING to us about SEX!!!!

If this VANITY is going to get SO MUCH ATTENTION, then STOP PREACHING to us, MSM!!!!

Sassoon is negotiating with Patrick McGinley, who has worked as creative director at Boston's Vidal Sassoon salon on Newbury Street, to run the academy. Other directors will likely include Dennis Tarr, who helped start the Blaine Beauty School chain locally 30 years ago.

"There is always a market for quality education," said Elizabeth Grady president John Walsh. "For Elizabeth Grady the more competition/awareness in the industry, the better we appear."

Is that an intended pun, or....

And if CUTTING HAIR is an "education" not a "VOCATION," then that explains the stoo-pidity of the kids these days (and why they all behave like a bunch of whores -- according to the moralizing press)!!!!

Vidal Sassoon now lives in Los Angeles and raises money to help build homes in New Orleans.
