The Why of Gaza

Great insight, blogger!

"Escape from Gaza or Voluntary Transfer?"

"Remember when Ariel Sharon offered to get out of Gaza if we would just allow Israel to build more est bank settlements? And I predicted that as soon as the settlements were built Israel would manufacture an excuse (like those toy rockets hitting empty lots) to renege on the deal. And here we are, with Israel firmly planted in the West Bank, and Gaza to be emptied to make was for Israel.

And off the coast of Gaza are recently discovered oil and gas fields, which would economically aid Gaza ... if Israel would allow the importation of the necessary equipment. But if the Palestinians are "voluntarily transferred", Israel gets that oil and gas
.

BTW, "Voluntary transfer" is what Hitler originally planned to do with the Jews in Germany, sending them to Africa or Madagascar, but Zionist leaders demanded Palestine and refused "voluntary transfer."

But what was not acceptable to the Zionists in Europe (and which then resulted in millions of deaths from typhus in the closing months of the war), is now apparently quite acceptable in Gaza." -- Mike Rivero of What Really Happened

"McCain Criticized for Slur"

"Arizona Sen. John McCain refused to apologize yesterday for his use of a racial slur to condemn the North Vietnamese prison guards who tortured and held him captive during the war.

"I hate the gooks,'' McCain said yesterday in response to a question from reporters aboard his campaign bus. "I will hate them as long as I live.''

"I have two problems with this story.

First, McCain seems to forget that when you invade another person's country, it is understandable that the locals may treat you rudely. After all, the invader IS the criminal
.

But the real problem I have is that the same media that hounded Dog Chapman off of the air for using the 'N' word in a private phone conversation is now willing to write McCain a free pass for 'Gook'! This seems like a double standard to me

"Report: Military not ready for US attack"

"US Military Not Adequately Prepared for Homeland Attack, Report Says" by Lolita C. Baldor Associated Press January 31, 2008

"The U.S. military isn't ready for a catastrophic attack on the country, and National Guard forces don't have the equipment or training they need for the job, according to a report.

Even fewer Army National Guard units are combat-ready today than were nearly a year ago when the Commission on the National Guard and Reserves determined that 88 percent of the units were not prepared for the fight, the panel says in a new report released Thursday.

The independent commission is charged by Congress to recommend changes in law and policy concerning the Guard and Reserves.

The commission's 400-page report concludes that the nation "does not have sufficient trained, ready forces available" to respond to a chemical, biological or nuclear weapons incident, "an appalling gap that places the nation and its citizens at greater risk."

"Right now we don't have the forces we need, we don't have them trained, we don't have the equipment," commission Chairman Arnold Punaro said in an interview with The Associated Press. "Even though there is a lot going on in this area, we need to do a lot more. ... There's a lot of things in the pipeline, but in the world we live in — you're either ready or you're not."

In response, Air Force Gen. Gene Renuart, chief of U.S. Northern command, said the Pentagon is putting together a specialized military team that would be designed to respond to such catastrophic events.

"The capability for the Defense Department to respond to a chemical, biological event exists now," Renuart told the AP. "It, today, is not as robust as we would like because of the demand on the forces that we've placed across the country. ... I can do it today. It would be harder on the (military) services, but I could respond."

Over the next year, Renuart said, specific active duty, Guard and Reserve units will be trained, equipped and assigned to a three-tiered response force totaling about 4,000 troops. There would be a few hundred first responders, who would be followed by a second wave of about 1,200 troops that would include medical and logistics forces.

The third wave, with the remainder of that initial 4,000 troops, would include aircraft units, engineers, and other support forces, depending on the type of incident.

Punaro, a retired Marine Corps major general, had sharp criticism for Northern Command, saying that commanders there have made little progress developing detailed response plans for attacks against the homeland.

"NorthCom has got to get religion in this area," said Punaro. He said the military needs to avoid "pickup game" type responses, such as the much-criticized federal reaction to Hurricane Katrina, and put in place the kind of detailed plans that exist for virtually any international crisis.

He also underscored the commission's main finding: the Pentagon must move toward making the National Guard and Reserves an integral part of the U.S. military.

The panel, in its No. 1 recommendation, said the Defense Department must use the nation's citizen soldiers to create an operational force that would be fully trained, equipped and ready to defend the nation, respond to crises and supplement the active duty troops in combat.

Pointing to the continued strain on the military, as it fights wars on two fronts, the panel said the U.S. has "no reasonable alternative" other than to continue to rely heavily on the reserves to supplement the active duty forces both at home and abroad.

Using reserves as a permanent, ready force, the commission argued, is a much more cost effective way to supplement the military since they are about 70 percent cheaper than active duty troops.

Oh FUCKING the TROOPS and fighting the war on the cheap, huh?

But "Support the Troops!"

I'm so sick of the jingoistic bullshit and lies, readers!

END THESE GOD-DAMN LYING WARS RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!

Asked how much it would cost to implement the panel's recommendations, Punaro said it will take billions to fully equip the Guard.

While vets sleep in the streets and Americans are kicked out of their homes.

AmeriKan Militarism MUST END, readers!

The commission is going to ask the Congressional Budget Office to do a cost analysis, he said.

In perhaps its most controversial recommendation, the panel again said that the nation's governors should be given the authority to direct active-duty troops responding to an emergency in their states. That recommendation, when it first surfaced last year, was rebuffed by the military and quickly rejected by Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

Sig Heil!

"I believe we're going to wear him down," said Punaro.

Renuart, however, said he believes it is unlikely that Gates will reverse himself. Renuart said he's talked to a number of state leaders on the matter, and most don't want full command of active duty troops — to include their care, feeding, discipline and logistics demands. Instead, he said, governors want to know that in a crisis, their needs will be met."

Well, they won't be by this negligent and criminal government, but no one seems to care!

Suit on up, kids, and kiss your parents good-bye!

NATO and Israel: Instruments of America's Wars in the Middle East

---
Op-eds on legal news by law professors and JURIST special guests...

JURIST Contributing Editor Ali Khan of Washburn University School of Law says that in the name of the "war of terror," NATO forces in Afghanistan are committing genocide by systematically hunting down and destroying the Taliban, a puritanical Islamic group, contrary to the terms of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide...

Sloganeers, propagandists and politicians often use the word "genocide" in ways that the law does not permit. But rarely is the crime of genocide invoked when Western militaries murder Muslim groups. This essay argues that the internationally recognized crime of genocide applies to the intentional killings that NATO troops commit on a weekly basis in the poor villages and mute mountains of Afghanistan to destroy the Taliban, a puritanical Islamic group. NATO combat troops bombard and kill people in Taliban enclaves and meeting places. They also murder defenseless Afghan civilians. The dehumanized label of "Taliban" is used to cloak the nameless victims of NATO operations. Some political opposition to this practice is building in NATO countries, such as Canada, where calls are heard to withdraw troops from Afghanistan or divert them to non-combat tasks.

Dehumanization

In almost all NATO nations, the Taliban have been completely dehumanized — a historically-tested signal that perpetrators of the crime of genocide carry unmitigated intentions to eradicate the dehumanized group. Politicians, the armed forces, the media, and even the general public associate in the West the Taliban with irrational fanatics, intolerant fundamentalists, brutal assassins, beheaders of women, bearded extremists, and terrorists. This luminescent negativity paves the way for aggression, military operations, and genocide. Promoting the predatory doctrine of collective self-defense, killing the Taliban is celebrated as a legal virtue. To leave the Taliban in control of Afghanistan, says NATO, is to leave a haven for terrorism.

A similar dehumanization took place in the 16th and 17th centuries when NATO precursors occupied the Americas to purloin land and resources. The killings of native inhabitants were extensive and heartless. Thomas Jefferson, the noble author of the Declaration of Independence, labeled Indians as "merciless savages." President Andrew Jackson pontificated: "What good man would prefer a country covered with forests and ranged by a few thousand savages to our extensive Republic, studded with cities, towns, and prosperous farms." Promoting the predatory doctrine of discovery, the United States Supreme Court later ratified the pilgrims' crimes, holding that "discovery gave an exclusive right to extinguish the Indian title (to land). ([T]he Indians were fierce savages...To leave them in possession of their country was to leave the country a wilderness."

The predators have not changed their stripes a bit. They come, they demonize, they obliterate. They do all this in the name of superior civilization.

The Facts

The NATO website lists its killings in Afghanistan. These killings are also reported in the world media, often with a shameless tone of gratitude as if NATO forces are engaged in wiping out cannibals. In 2007 alone, NATO helicopters and precision guided munitions bombed and killed over six thousand "Taliban." Read the following recent attacks, which the NATO itself reports, and smell the scent of genocide:
  • On January 19, 2008, NATO launched a preemptive strike relying on "credible intelligence" that the Taliban were planning to mass on a NATO base. The attack killed two dozen "insurgents" in the Watapoor District of Kunar Province, though the exact number of casualties could not be confirmed because of the rough mountainous region. The world media reported that numerous civilians were killed and 25 bodies were buried in just one mass grave.

  • On January 12, 2008, NATO forces conducted what it calls a "precise strike" on a compound in Kapsia Province targeting Taliban leaders. NATO claimed that the civilians were cleared from the compound before the attack. The claim is absurd because any removal of civilians from the compound would have alerted the battle-hardened Taliban that an enemy attack was imminent.

  • On September 20, 2007, NATO forces launched "Operation Palk Wahel" to kill and remove the Taliban from an area in the Upper Gereshk Valley. Numerous civilians were killed. The evidence of the genocide was so obvious that NATO admitted that it "was unaware of civilians in the vicinity of the target and unfortunately it appears that a number of non-combatants were caught in the attack and killed."
The Law

The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (entered into force, 1951) is binding on all states including the 26 member states of NATO. The Genocide Convention is jus cogens, the law from which no derogation is allowed. It provides no exceptions for any nation or any organization of nations, such as the United Nations or NATO, to commit genocide. Nor does the Convention allow any exceptions to genocide "whether committed in time of peace or in time of war." Even traditional self-defense - let alone preemptive self-defense, a deceptive name for aggression - cannot be invoked to justify or excuse the crime of genocide.

In murdering the Taliban, NATO armed forces systematically practice on a continual basis the crime of genocide that consists of three constituent elements - act, intent to destroy, and religious group. The crime, as defined in the Convention, is analyzed below:
  1. Act. The Convention lists five acts, each of which qualifies as genocide. NATO forces in Afghanistan are committing three of the five acts. They are killing members of the Taliban. They are causing serious bodily harm to members of the Taliban. They are deliberately inflicting on the Taliban conditions of life calculated to bring about their physical destruction in whole or in part. Any of these three acts committed one time constitutes the crime of genocide. NATO combat troops have been committing, and continue to commit, these acts through multiple means and weapons.

  2. Intent to Destroy. The crime of genocide is a crime of intent. It must be shown that NATO combat troops and the high command ordering these troops carry the requisite intent to destroy the Taliban. Mere negligent killings do not qualify as genocide. The statements of NATO's Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and those of NATO spokesmen leave no doubt that the NATO conducts military operations to "hunt and destroy" the Taliban. Preemptive strikes to kill the Taliban are sufficient proof that NATO troops and commanding generals have specific intent to destroy as many Taliban members as they can find. The weekly murderous planning and intelligence gathering to locate and eliminate the Taliban leaders and members further demonstrate that the killings in Afghanistan are not negligent, accidental, or by mistake. For all legal purposes, NATO's incessant and deliberate killings of the Taliban are powered with the specific intent to destroy a religious group.

  3. Religious Group. The Genocide Convention is far from universal in that it does not protect all groups from genocide. Its protection covers only four groups: national, ethnic, racial and religious. (Political groups are not protected). The Convention does not require the complete eradication of a protected group as a necessary condition for the crime of genocide. Even part destruction of a protected group constitutes the crime. It is no secret that the Taliban are a religious group. (They may also qualify as a national (Afghan) or ethnic (Pushtun) group). The Taliban advocate and practice a puritanical version of Islam. The Convention does not demand that the protected group advocate and practice a form of religion acceptable to the West or the world. The questionable beliefs and practices of a religious group are no reasons to destroy the group. That the Taliban are armed or support terrorism or oppress women are unlawful excuses to commit genocide. (All reasons that Hitler had to murder Jews would be simply irrelevant under the Convention).
The Holding

It may, therefore, be safely concluded that NATO combat troops and NATO commanders are engaged in murdering the Taliban, a protected group under the Genocide Convention, with the specific intent to physically and mentally destroy the group in whole or in part. This is the crime of genocide.

Paralysed in a car crash, Maher al Aseli relies on an electric respirator to breathe. So, every time the power supply is cut, it is up to his family to man the pump to keep him alive

By Donald Macintyre

Wednesday, 30 January 2008

Abed al Aseli, father of the household, rises to light a lamp powered by cooking gas while one of his sons moves in a swift, practised way towards the bed of Maher, 12, in what is literally a life-or-death mission. Maher, paralysed from the neck down for the past six and a half years, normally relies on an electric respirator to breathe. When there is no power, the only alternative, however long the outage lasts, is to maintain his breathing manually with an Ambo hand pump.

Which is why, since last week's cut in fuel supplies to Gaza's power station, Mr al Aseli has recruited his five teenage nephews and nieces to help him, his wife, Alia, and their four other sons and two daughters, aged between eight and 21, working in rotation throughout the night, if necessary, with the nerve-racking, exhausting, task of keeping Maher alive.

Yeah, but Arabs hate Jews more than they love their kids.

Another stink Jew lie I'm tired of hearing!

And given this family's story, the NaZionists are the most evil people on the face of this planet.

Mr al Aseli says this is stressful for the whole family, and that his wife has to spend a disproportionate amount of time caring for Maher in what the family has made, in effect, into a home intensive care unit. "It is very difficult," he says. "If the power goes out at 1am, I have to shout and immediately wake up the kids."

The tragedy which first put Maher into this state had nothing to do with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As Mrs al Aseli explains, when Maher was five and a half years old, he was driven by his father to a local supermarket. Mr Maher left his son in the car while he nipped into the store, but as he started to make his way back, he saw in horror that Maher had managed to get out of the car and was crossing the road towards him. Mr Maher shouted at him to stop where he was but Maher was run down close to the family car by a fast-moving taxi whose driver failed to see him. Maher's spinal cord was injured between the second and third vertebrae, leaving him quadriplegic...."

Global Research Editorial Note

The atrocities of the Israeli military in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank directed against the Palestinian people are part of an ongoing process.

Recently, in the Gaza Strip, there has been an escalation of these atrocities.

In a bitter irony, this escalation of violence coincided with the U.S. President's arrival in Israel. This is the peace process that the White House, Tel Aviv, and the Arab regimes (the so-called "moderates") are talking about: death and destruction.

The following are grim and saddening photographs of the ongoing crimes against the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip.

There has been little done and said worldwide about how an entire nation is in captivity. Palestinians are prisoners in their own homes and ancestral lands, which have been transformed into a concentration camp.

These photographs presented to the readers of Global Research re-call the barbaric 2006 Israeli bombardment of Lebanese civilians, many of whom were young children.

The world watches in silence and without shame. Who are the real terrorists?

One Million Iraqis Killed

Humanitarian Crisis of Vast Proportions

A new professional poll carried out by a British firm in Iraq concludes that excess deaths from violence since March 19, 2003 through summer 2007 came to just over 1 million. Note that excess deaths from violence do not necessarily imply that they are directly war-related. Thus, murders of a criminal sort, tribal feuding, and so forth would be included. Since Bush interfered with the establishment of a strong new government after his invasion, he promoted the sort of insecurity that permitted high rates of violence, whether political, criminal or war-related. This poll tracks with the findings of the studies of Gilbert Burnham and Les Roberts, published in the Lancet and disputes lower numbers found by a recent WHO study (which, however, only ran through June 2006 and was limited solely to civilians--this British study goes to 2007 and seems to include everyone.)

The British findings are also consistent with estimates of between 1 million and 2 million widows in Iraq. These widows, many of them young, face extreme poverty without a breadwinner. As the Iraqi street has been captured by religious parties and militias, gender segregation and female seclusion have increased, which prevents single young women from going out to work in mixed-gender settings like stores and workshops. In short, Iraq is being Talibanized by Bush's war.

Reuters points out that almost none of the widows are getting any welfare payments from the Iraqi government. It adds: "A report by aid groups found that 43 percent of Iraqis lived in "absolute poverty". Four million people needed food assistance and only one in three children under five had access to safe drinking water."

Israel's Lawyer

He's Palestinian!!!

Who'd a thunk it?

"Is Abbas Israel’s lawyer?"

"[ 31/01/2008 - 12:13 AM ]
Comment By Khalid Amayreh in occupied E. Jerusalem

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has vehemently rejected Hamas demands that only Palestinian and Egyptian authorities be allowed to run the Rafah border crossing.

“We will not accept any new conditions; they (Hamas) have to go back to the old border-crossing agreement. We are more interested in the Palestinian people’s interests than Hamas is. If Hamas is really for them as well, let them comply with this agreement.”

Well, does Abbas really know what he is talking about? Indeed, as the Arab proverb goes, if he knows, it is a real calamity, and if he doesn’t, it is even a greater calamity.”

I am saying this because the old agreement governing operations at the Rafah Border-Crossing enables Israel, the country that has been trying to decimate 1.5 million Gazans by way of starving them, to have the final say as to when the border terminal may be opened and when it will be closed.

We all remember how thousands of Palestinians, including students, patients, pilgrims and other travelers, were left stranded on the Egyptian side of the border for weeks and months because an Israeli officer on the Israeli side of the border decided to keep these helpless victims hostage to his whims and cannibalistic instincts.

In fact, this wicked sadism, which Mr. Abbas is defending doggedly now, was responsible for the death of dozens of Palestinians who were left stranded in the desert, as if they were animals, not human beings. Go back to relevant reports describing the plight of stranded Gazans and you will understand what I am talking about.

How did Israel manage to keep the border-crossing closed most of the days of the year? Well, it was very simple. According to the “wonderful” agreement Abbas is now demanding that Hamas accept unconditionally, the Rafah border terminal can’t be operational unless in the presence of EU monitors. But the monitors themselves, who hail from several EU countries and some of them may well be working for the Israeli Intelligence, are based in the small Israeli kibbutz of Kerem Shalom, a few miles away from the border terminal. And according to the infamous agreement, they can’t have a free access to the border terminal unless they receive beforehand a daily permit from the Israeli army.

For its part, the Israeli army, acting on instructions from the government, would simply and routinely declare the only road from Kerem Shalom to the Rafah border terminal a closed military zone in order to keep the border-crossing closed. Of course, the army would concoct “security reasons” to justify the virtually perpetual closure, but everyone , including the Israelis themselves, know quite well that genuine security considerations have very little to do with the Israeli measures and that the real motive is to punish and torment the Palestinians.

As mentioned, this flagrant abuse of authority was not done one day or two days or even ten days per month. This was the norm, the modus operandi, and the border crossing was kept closed 26 or even 29 days per month, causing tremendous suffering to the Palestinians.

It was a deliberate and calculated process intended to torment, savage, brutalize and humiliate the people of Gaza, and it was all done under the rubric of an “international agreement.”

The EU leadership and member-states knew well what was going on at Kerem Shalom. But they were too morally dishonest and too subservient to Israel and the United States to show any meaningful objection to Israel’s systematic persecution of a helpless people whose men, women and children are clinging to life just as many of the Jewish inmates at Ghetto Warsaw did nearly 67 years ago.

So, I would like to ask Abbas and his aides and hangers-on who talk too much and make so much noise, claiming to serve the vital interests of the Palestinian people:

How do you think that re-allowing Israel to control the Rafah border- crossing would serve the interests of the Palestinian people? Are you drunk? Are you stupid? Are blind? Are you ignorant?

Besides, why do you think that Israel should be involved in running the Rafah border- crossing in the first place? Isn’t the border crossing an exclusively Egyptian-Palestinian crossing? Didn’t Israel declare that it ended its occupation of the Gaza Strip? Has not the Zionist regime been saying ad nauseam that it is no longer responsible for Gaza? If so, why do you insist that the slave master remain the ultimate decision-maker, the ultimate boss? This is sickening, to say the least and it shows a kind of umbilical subservience on your part to the nefarious occupiers.

I realize that there are problems between Fatah and Hamas. However, betraying the Palestinian people and undermining their vital interests for the purpose of weakening Hamas and appeasing Israel and pleasing Washington borders on treason, pure and simple.

What else can be said of and about clinging to an unconscionable agreement that allows the evil occupiers to imprison, torment and humiliate us with impunity…because the “agreement” says so.

Well, the agreement may go to hell along with those who signed it.

In short, Hamas is right a hundred per cent. The Rafah border crossing must be jointly run exclusively by the Palestinian and Egyptian authorities. And the Ramallah regime may, if it wants, take part in managing the border terminal, as part of an overall reconciliation process between Gaza and Ramallah.

However, brining Israel into the picture is unacceptable. The people of Gaza have suffered more than enough at the hands of Israel. Their murderer and tormentor must never be allowed to be jailer as well.

Is Abbas going to understand this? I doubt it."

How to Steal an Election

"How easily offices are stolen in the U.S."

"by Pat LaMarche

Wednesday, January 30, 2008 - Bangor Daily News

"No people is wholly civilized where a distinction is drawn between stealing an office and stealing a purse."— Theodore Roosevelt

I’ll add that no people can be wholly civilized if they don’t even notice offices getting stolen - I like to think that most folks would notice somebody stealing their purse.

I’ve had some interesting experiences in my life. I’ve done some things that made me feel wide awake and really alive. But possibly my most profound political endeavor was becoming party to the Ohio recount after the presidential election of 2004.

My Green Party running mate David Cobb and I didn’t recount Ohio because we thought maybe they would find enough votes to prove we had won. (Though it’s pretty awe inspiring to lose by 58 million votes to a man who shot his friend in the face.) No, we recounted Ohio because voter tampering took place and ordinary people had their most precious democratic possession stolen from them: their right to vote.

In some ways we were unlikely suspects to be launching a recount. But the law in Ohio refuses the offended individuals the right to intercede for themselves. The old black woman who needed to use the bathroom and was denied re-entry to the voter line couldn’t contest the election because as "just a voter" she didn’t have standing. The folks who voted with ballots that Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell said were printed on the wrong weight paper lacked standing too. Only a presidential team could cry "foul" and fight for their rights.

Why us? Well, John Kerry lacked — well — everything needed to stand up against democracy’s undoing.

I don’t know and I don’t care why the 2004 Democratic challenger wouldn’t fight for thousands of Ohio voters — and consequently the country. Sure, I have my opinions. But eventually, during our recount, he finally admitted his purse had been stolen.

It wasn’t the first stolen purse in the history of U.S. politics and unfortunately it’s not the last.

Let’s start first with past stolen elections. Florida in 2000 is the one that everyone mentions when discussing electoral corruption. But I’m not in the mood to argue, so let’s pick one that we can all agree on — and not the Nixon-Kennedy election with allegations of dead relatives voting in Chicago because we would still end up fighting.

Let’s pick one we can all agree involved plotting, stolen opportunity, violence and pure unadulterated usurpation of power. And we can prove it was stolen. One minute this man stood on victory’s pathway and the next he lay sprawled on the floor with a bullet in his head. It was 1968 and Robert Kennedy and the American people lost a weighty purse.

Is it hubris or denial or both that makes Americans believe that elections can’t be stolen in this country?

Maybe it’s a question of semantics. So I’ll proffer a definition.

See a stolen election is a limiting of options. In the case of 2004 Ohio, fraud brought our options from two choices down to one.

But that election was stolen long before then. I mean really, just how much did you like those two choices?

Did you like John McCain until that false rumor began about his adopted child of color being the result of an illicit affair? Did you like Howard Dean until that yelling thing happened and the networks showed it over and over again?

No bullet needed for Dean, no bloody end for McCain; why really assassinate them when character assassination does just fine?

Well this week I stood in Maine’s Hall of Flags with a candidate whose days are numbered. Not because they deserve to be, but because he just won’t get a fair chance. He’s under-funded and marginalized and ridiculed and at times worse — treated like he doesn’t exist. The election stealers won’t stop until Ron Paul has gone the way of Dennis Kucinich and all the "opposition" voices are silenced.

And don’t even get me started about the third party choices that you will never get.

No, by Election Day you’ll substantively have only two choices. And the election will go to a friend of drug companies, insurance companies, imperialism and war.

Oh look! Your purse is missing too.

The unheralded news from the rest of the world, including BBC, is never without compelling reports from a little place called Gaza. Gazans for the first time face slow starvation; Hamas members face selective execution. Israel has more direct political clout and media coverage in Washington than any other nation. Therefore, only Israel can move to starve an entire population while Congress and the press looks on. The US press makes the people of Gaza irrelevant by ignoring events there.

Recent rare news clips have exposed for the first time, the wall that separates southern Gaza from Egypt for about four miles. It is worth noting that neither Egypt nor Gaza built this wall. Israel built it when it took over policing of Gaza's small south border with Egypt. . Israel managed the Rafah Gate when I went there in 2003. In 2005 Egypt took over managing the no-man’s land by agreement with Israel.

Egypt’s Gaza wall has, according to Hamas, Israeli cameras and computers in place monitoring everyone who comes and goes, identifying and remotely scrutinizing each face. Egypt is compelled to cooperate with Israel, making it more or less a jail keeper.

When the Gazans breached the wall, the USA was quick to tell Egypt that $100 million in US Aid to Egypt would be suspended, pending its forcing the Gazans back inside their bottle. Only about five percent of the Gazans broke out into Egypt Monday, January 21, 2008. If Egypt does not do so, it will face the combined wrath of the USA and the pit bully of the Middle East, nuclear Israel.

What is the USA’s plan for the 1.4 million Gazans? Israel has also made it clear the Palestinians can have a state of their own, but only if Israel has the power to police it, as they police Gaza and the West Bank now. Therefore, there is no place in Israel’s plan for 4 or 5 million Philistines with dreams of self-determination. Israel’s ambition is for virtual slave labor camps that are pretend states. Prior to its uprisings, Gaza provided thousands of day laborers for Israel’s fields and factories. This is what Zionists in Israel wants.

Former Prime Minister Arial Sharon had offered to conduct an annihilation of every Arab, if political Israel could stand the international pressure from his acts. He was dead serious and he is far from the only Israeli leader who believes this way.

The economy of the Gaza society has been systematically destroyed by isolation. Israel’s plan is no secret; it is simply cushioned by our press and politicians. Israel allows no equality for other religions, nor do non-Jews participate, except under its Apartheid-like control, so there will be no shared state unless the world forces a democracy upon Israel.

Israel has systematically forced Palestinian attrition from the occupied lands for 59 years-- attrition by emigration for those able to leave, and attrition by violent death for thousands who stay. Our research reveals that food burning now assures widespread world famine. With this going on, Israel might get away with starving the Philistines while the media focuses attention elsewhere on bigger tragedies. So huge is the problem we see that a million missing Philistines might be overlooked, lost in the shadows of a worldwide tragedy… a tragedy that may someday be remembered in infamy as "The Famine of the Food Burners." Shall we stand idly by and allow it?

The Lone Nazi State Left in the World

Guess which little shitstink state it is, readers.

"It is an irony of life, or fate, that the only neo-Nazi state in the world today is the one built by survivors of the Holocaust"

"Ayoon Wa Azan (Why Don't They Help Themselves?)

Jihad el-Khazen Al-Hayat - 30/01/08//

It is an irony of life, or fate, that the only neo-Nazi state in the world today is the one built by survivors of the Holocaust and their descendents.

The Gaza Strip was a large Nazi concentration camp. As thousands of its inhabitants poured into Egypt through openings in the wall, the strip became another Warsaw Ghetto with the Israeli army depicted as the Nazi army and the Palestinians as the Polish Jews.

The Gazans rebelled this month, but the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto were 65 years ahead of them. Their Uprising goes back to January 1943 when they were equally killed by their invaders.

Even the walls the Israeli or Nazi army built around Gaza resemble the fences encircling the Warsaw Ghetto. According to the Holocaust history, the German Governor-General Hans Frank established on October 16, 1940 the Warsaw Ghetto he crammed with some 450,000 Jews, then closed off from the outside world by building a wall with armed guards.

The readers can easily replace the names of Sharon, Barack, or Olmert with the name of Frank, as they can replace the defense army and the assassination units with the SS Nazi men.

Between 1941 and 1943, starvation, disease, as well as deportations to concentration camps and extermination camps befell the Jews. Consequently, the ghetto population dropped from 450,000 to 70,000 Jews. In parallel, the Gaza Strip, with its almost two million inhabitants, has been surrounded by a wall and a new Nazi guard. Power was cut; food and drugs were withheld from the needy and the sick. I pause here to say that on the eve of my trip from London to Davos, and prior to the population influx into Egypt, I was having dinner with friends of mine when I received a mobile phone call from a man who said the minister of health wanted to talk to me.

Even though the connection was bad, I soon realized that I was speaking to the Palestinian Minister of Health in Gaza Strip. I do not know him in person; we never had any contact earlier. The minister told me the Gazans were dying slowly and in pain with no one to offer them help. Every time electricity is cut all of a sudden, he complained, a child, a pregnant woman or an old man dies in the hospital, as their frail bodies fail to endure the shock. My interlocutor may have been Bassem Naim - I am not sure. I have an email address with initials. I asked for a telephone number or address and then received the address in a message.

And so I found myself before a senior official who is announcing the death of his people to the whole world, while I couldn't but listen, share his sadness, and mumble futile encouragement words.

Only two days after the unexpected phone call, the Gazans fled through the wall to Egypt in search of water, drugs and food. In the same month in 1943, the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto staged an uprising against the Nazis, organized an armed resistance, and scored a preliminary victory. But in the next three months, the Nazis destroyed the ghetto and either killed the remaining population or deported them to concentration camps, mostly to Treblinka, where at least 56,000 people were killed according to official reports.

Palestinian figures are lower in comparison. Israel killed more than five thousand Palestinians, including 870 minors since September 29, 2000, i.e. since the outbreak of the Second Intifada. In the past days alone, it killed more than forty Palestinians against ten Israelis wounded by the resistance-fired rockets.

Those are not rockets but primitive fireworks Israel uses as a pretext to kill by resorting to pure Nazi practices. The Nazis used to kill 20 or 100 Jews for each Nazi citizen killed. The neo-Nazis in Israel are committed to the same ratio of killing because, just like the Aryan race, they consider themselves better than their enemies.

Were the Palestinians supposed to throw roses or rice at their enemies after forty or sixty years of occupation? In the past, the 'civilized' world feigned ignorance, claiming it was unaware of the magnitude of Nazi crimes until after 1943. But what excuse will it invoke today while Israeli crimes are reported by all the audio-visual media? Why do the Arabs and Muslims always expect the world to help them when they do not help themselves?

The neo-Nazi state would not have resorted to killing and destruction had it not been for the connivance of the Israel lobby in the United States; had it not been for the corrupt American Congress that can be easily sold and bought and for the radical American administration that vetoes any Security Council condemnation of Israel.

Israeli Nazism is a disgrace to the Jews who survived the Holocaust and are now committing similar crimes. It is a disgrace to the Christian West that killed the Jews and let the Palestinians pay the price. Last Sunday, the West commemorated the Holocaust, hushing up the memory of its victims' victims. It is a disgrace in particular to the American administration that offers Israel weapons to kill the Palestinians.

I clearly condemn the Nazis in the Israeli government and army. I equally condemn all those who support the crimes of the neo-Nazis, who constitute a minority compared to the majority of Jews who champion peace and about whom I have always written.

I have continuously opposed suicide attacks and asked for an end of rocket firing. Yet, nothing justifies the victims of the Holocaust and their descendents as they build the only Nazi state in the world in this century. By the same token, nothing justifies their perpetration of a "Pogrom" similar to the worst persecutions they endured in their long history stretching from the Romans, through the Third Reich and up to the Russian era.

Ron Paul Campaigner Threatened by Gun

Sig Heil, 'Murka!

"Cop to Ron Paul supporter: 'Well, you be careful. I wouldn't want you to get shot'"

"Students Campaign For Ron Paul

Jan 30, 2008

(UWIRE.com) This story was written by Brenna Hawley, University Daily Kansan

Adam Wood walked from door to door, each slamming in his face. He was in a far away state, yet every person in the Botany Woods suburb of South Carolina seemed to hate him. The police were called, and an officer motioned for Wood, Lawrence junior, to come have a chat.

The police officer told Wood he needed a solicitor's license to canvass for Ron Paul, and Wood politely denied the statement. The police officer thought carefully then gave his reply.

"Well, you be careful," he said. "I wouldn't want you to get shot."

Wood was campaigning for Republican presidential candidate Paul in South Carolina over winter break, and continued to canvass despite saying a gun was pulled on another campaigner in Iowa. Wood was one of four KU students who campaigned in Iowa the last week of December, and one of two to later continue on to South Carolina in early January. These students were involved in a presidential campaign that is largely grassroots.

Wood said the days in Iowa were long. He and the other students campaigning stayed in a cabin in the rural part of the state. They would leave by 8 a.m., campaign door to door all day, take a quick break for dinner and make phone calls for Paul at night.

Wood said the trip, which he and the other students paid for themselves, was worth the money and time because he thought Ron Paul was one of the only honest men left in politics who could make changes in the country. He said there were problems with foreign policy, the economy and domestic issues, and Ron Paul was the only man who could fix them.

"If we don't fix these problems now, we won't have much time to fix them," Wood said.

Matt Hurd, Olathe senior, who also campaigned for Paul in Iowa, said he liked Paul's economic plan. Paul has spoken out against the Federal Reserve, and also voted against the Iraq War and Patriot Act as a Texas representative. Hurd said his message has been consistent throughout the campaign and for the last 20 years.

"People have been able to see his message," Hurd said. "Even if he doesn't win, he's gotten the issues out there."

Paul's campaign wouldn't have been possible without the Internet, Hurd said.

Will Stewart, Whittier, Calif., senior and another campaigner for Paul in Iowa, said another reason the grassroots campaign was so large was because the media had not covered Paul. He said Paul's message appealed to both young and old.

"People who have never seen the point of voting are coming out in droves," Stewart said.

Stewart said many Paul supporters believe he's the only candidate who follows the Constitution today and votes in the House of Representatives accordingly.

Colin Barnes, Overland Park sophomore, who also campaigned for Paul in Iowa, said Paul is one of the only candidates standing up for the civil liberties promised in the Constitution.

Barnes continued on to the South Carolina primary after returning home from Iowa. Wood said that he and Barnes were disappointed with Paul's poor showing in Iowa, where he received 10 percent of the Republican vote. After driving home from Iowa, the two slept for part of the day and then drove the 20 hours to South Carolina, where they spent another ten days campaigning.

Jeff Frazee, the national youth coordinator for Paul's campaign, said students came to Iowa from all across the country to campaign for Paul. He said that during a two-week period in Iowa before the state's primaries, more than 300 students went door to door and made phone calls for Ron Paul. Wood said some came from other countries, including New Zealand and Canada.

Frazee said at least 40 college students campaigned for Ron Paul in South Carolina. He said that 20 percent of the people in the 18-30 age voting bracket voted for Ron Paul.

"Consumer spending slows abruptly"

"Consumers increased their spending at the weakest pace in six months while applications for unemployment benefits soared last week, two more signs the economy is weakening.

The Commerce Department reported Thursday that consumer spending edged up just 0.2 percent in December -- the year's peak shopping season -- down sharply from a 1 percent gain in November. It was the weakest performance in this area since a similar 0.2 percent rise in June of last year.

Meanwhile, the Labor Department reported that the number of laid off workers filing applications for unemployment benefits soared by 69,000 to 375,000. That was the highest level for jobless claims since the week of Oct. 8, 2005, when the economy was dealing with the disruptions caused by Hurricane Katrina and the other Gulf Coast hurricanes.

The increase in jobless claims was more than triple what economists had been expecting although part of the increase was blamed on technical difficulties in adjusting the figures around the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday...."

"Neocon Plan to Snoop Online Activity

Online Casino News
January 31, 2008

According to the Wall Street Journal, the White House is proposing a six billion dollar secretive system that would monitor Internet traffic and collect personal data.

The proposal from President George Bush would be designed to protect US communications networks from attacks by terrorists, spies and hackers but is stirring controversy and could prove a hard sell to Congress and the American public amid divisiveness about other Government-run surveillance programs.

In addition, the newspaper quotes officials familiar with the initiative as stating that protecting private computer systems would likely require the Government to install sensors on private and company networks. This would require the placement of millions of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, which would allow the Government, retailers and others to closely monitor consumer behaviour and activity.

The Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association (iMEGA) lobby group is critical of the Bush plan and has also scrutinized the European Union’s desire to have IP numbers considered as personal data.

“That policy puts the European Union on a collision course with web giants like Google and Yahoo as well as a growing number of popular web 2.0 services that utilise IP addresses to personalise and improve the relevance of their offerings to web users,” read a statement from iMEGA."

"Security Measures Pose Risk of Government Control of Cyberspace

Dennis Fisher
SearchSecurity.com
January 31, 2008

Legislators say the Patriot Act and the Protect America Act protect the country from terrorists, but those and other measures ultimately put the government and a few corporations in control of the Internet, says Dennis Fisher, Executive Editor of SearchSecurity.com and Information Security magazine.

For more than six years now, the federal government has been using the specter of terrorism as its preferred method of scaring legislators, foreign governments and the American public into accepting a parade of increasingly spurious laws and policies allegedly designed to improve security. Measures such as the Patriot Act, the Protect America Act and the hopelessly misguided plan to monitor all of the Internet’s traffic all have been pitched as necessary steps to keep the country’s critical assets secure.

But the assumptions on which these arguments are based are fundamentally flawed and this faulty train of thought is leading us into a dangerous new world in which the government and a handful of its corporate confederates control virtually every aspect of our online lives. And that’s not only bad for the personal security and privacy of citizens, it’s bad for our nation’s security as well.

All of this began in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in 2001, when the Bush administration bullied a terrified Congress into passing the Patriot Act. The act includes a slew of provisions that were hotly debated at the time, but now can be seen as just the warm-up act for what was to come later. For example, the Patriot Act gave every district court judge in the country the ability to issue wiretap and surveillance orders for investigations that involved terrorism. The law also gave the FBI the authority to conduct so-called roving wiretaps, which do not require the bureau to specify all of the third parties or communications carriers that will be targeted in the wiretap. Privacy advocates such as EPIC and legal scholars denounced these provisions as unconstitutional, but the administration just repeated the word terrorism over and over until it drowned out all of the opposition.

Many of the act’s more controversial provisions were meant to expire in 2005, but many of them have been extended, some indefinitely, and others have been expanded and re-interpreted to the point that they’re hardly recognizable anymore. The most heinous and worrisome result of this is the Protect America Act, an ironically titled law passed in August that many experts say not only further erodes what little privacy Internet users retain, but in fact introduces more vulnerabilities into the U.S. communications infrastructure.

The heart of the PAA is language that gives the U.S. government the ability to eavesdrop on communications on domestic networks without a warrant, as long as one of the parties involved is reasonably believed to be outside the U.S. There are a number of problems with this, with the biggest one being the fact that this system will by default collect some unknowable amount of communications that do not involve any foreign parties. This is unavoidable and it should also be unacceptable. Americans should not be subject to this kind of secret surveillance. But we have grown so accustomed to this slow drip, drip, drip of privacy invasions in the name of security that few opponents even bothered to mount much of an attack on the PAA’s implications.

However, a group of security experts analyzed the act, its implications for security and privacy and the problems with the likely architecture of this wiretapping system. Not surprisingly, they found a number of issues. The group, comprising Steve Bellovin of Columbia University, Matt Blaze of the University of Pennsylvania, Peter Neumann of SRI International, Whit Diffie and Susan Landau of Sun Microsystems and Jennifer Rexford of Princeton University, wrote a paper on the Protect America Act and their conclusions are not pretty.

"U.S. communications security has always been fundamental to national security. The surveillance architecture implied by the Protect America Act will, by its very nature, capture some purely domestic communications, risking the very national security that the act is supposed to protect. In an age so dependent on communication, the loss could well be greater than the gain," the authors write in their conclusion. "To prevent greater threats to US national security, it is imperative that proper security—including minimization, robust control, and oversight—be built into the system from the start. If security cannot be assured, then any surveillance performed using that system will be inherently fraught with risks that are fundamentally unacceptable."

Those are the words of some of the top security experts in the world, not some policy wonk at a think tank in Washington. And as bad as that sounds, it only gets worse. Consider these words from a recent story in The New Yorker on Michael McConnell , the director of national intelligence, and his draft plan to secure the Internet: "The plan will propose restrictions that are certain to be unpopular. In order for cyberspace to be policed, Internet activity will have to be closely monitored. [Former National Security Agency analyst and security consultant] Ed Giorgio, who is working with McConnell on the plan, said that would mean giving government the authority to examine the content of any e-mail, file transfer, or Web search. ‘Google has records that could help in a cyber-investigation,’ he said. Giorgio warned me, ‘We have a saying in this business: ‘Privacy and security are a zero-sum game.’ "’

This is a perfect summation of the government’s current policies on surveillance, security and terrorism: If you want security, you have to cede your privacy. And if you’d rather have privacy, then you won’t be secure. This flawed logic lays bare the administration’s complete misunderstanding of the concept of security and how it is achieved. Security, whether of a network or of a country, results from intelligent, thoughtful policies and procedures designed to support a defined goal. It does not come from scare tactics. And while security often is described as a series of tradeoffs, swapping privacy for security is not one of them, nor should it ever be."

Israel's DU Problem

I like the blogger's introductory question:

"My question is what about the Arabs that had this shit tested on them??

by Haaretz Staff

Troops and officers who were exposed to chemical warfare agents have fallen ill with cancer and other diseases, but the authorities are refusing to recognize the full extent of their disabilities.

The soldiers say they have also received threatening visits from members of the Defense Ministry's security department - MALAMB - after they launched a campaign to have their disabilities recognized for compensation.

One former soldier who fell ill was warned not to tell his story to the media, while another patient's doctor and lawyer both had their computer hard disks seized....

The experiments were conducted in sealed glass rooms, and the poisonous fumes were supposedly funneled outside by ventilating hoods. But one former employee, who asked to remain anonymous, said that the hoods "were not the best," and some gas escaped. Meshulam also said he now realizes that the poisonous gases were recirculated through the room by the ventilating system...."

How about that last bit, huh?

Must take the Zionists back to 1944, right?

What hypocritical liars!

Israel's Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Weapons Sites

Also see: How Israel Got the Nuclear Bomb

What incredible assholes and hypocrites the stink NaZionist liars are!!!

This is why you get the vitriolic profanity, because Iran is only trying to build power plants!

Then you read something like this:

""Should the U.S. bomb Israel's secret chemical and biological weapons complex, IIBR, at Nes Ziona?""

"Mention the name of the secretive Israeli nuclear weapons lab at Dimona, and some will recognize this is the place Israel enriches plutonium for military use so they can build thermonuclear, fission and neutron bombs.

But who knows about the top-secret Israeli biological and chemical weapons complex located in the Tel Aviv suburb of Nes Ziona, called the Israel Institute of Biological Research (IIBR)?

IIBR is so secretive that it does not appear on any maps and is off-limits even to members of the Knesset, Israel's Parliament.

Didn't the "Coalition of the Willing" --COW's--invade Iraq because they claimed Iraq had WMD's like nukes, biological and chemical weapons that were being hid from the world? And that Iraq was denying inspectors access to their WMD sites and threatening to use these WMD's against America?

What about Israel denying inspectors access to their WMD sites at Dimona and at IIBR?

What would these COW's say to Israel's WMD's? Like the 300 plus nuclear weapons Israel has? Nukes which they threaten to use against neighboring countries.

And has threatened to use their nukes against the entire world, sort of a nuclear hissy fit, by invoking their dreaded "Sampson "
option.

Israel has shown the world it has no concern for the safety of others, like in the October 1992 crash of El Al Boeing 747 flight LY1862 that slammed into an apartment building in Amsterdam.

The El Al flight, in violation of the international Chemical Weapons Treaty, carried sarin gas chemicals, enough to annihilate the populations of several large cities.

The flight also carried weapons-grade plutonium and depleted uranium. A bitch's brew that was partially discharged into the surrounding community, sickening over 2,000 Dutch people--residents, police and rescue workers--who have sought treatment for a host of maladies including fatigue, breathing problems, hair loss, neurological ailments, mental confusion, depression, encephalomyelitis and disabling joint pains.

The Israelis immediately initiated a cover-up, saying that the flight carried nothing but "perfumes and gift articles." As late as April 22, 1998, Israeli Transport Minister Shaul Yahalom maintained that there were "no dangerous material on that plane. Israel has nothing to hide."

An incident that the Israeli government, in cahoots with the Dutch, have been striving to "wipe off the map" so no evidence exists.

Like the disappearance of the flight's "black box" voice recorder. Plus, metal parts from the wreckage were recycled and melted down before a proper investigation could begin---A technique which was recycled nine years later, with the WTC wreckage.

In addition, soil samples taken at the crash site have turned up evidence suggesting that not only was enriched plutonium on board, but also U.S. nuclear weapons technology that was being illegally shipped from the U.S. to Israel.

Israel stealing America's nuclear weapon technology?

Back in 1992?

Damn straight. This we know from the brave and courageous Sibel Edmonds, who is risking her freedom, if not her life, to expose this gang of thieves.

Israel has no regard for other humans, not even American lives as it proved on June 8, 1967, with its savage and unprovoked attack on the USS Liberty.

An attack which killed 34 US personnel.

If this is how Israel treats her "friend", the U.S., what other atrocities has it committed?

How about the September 25, 1997 Israeli attempted assassination of Hamas leader Khaled Meshal ?

Then Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu personally directed the attempted murder of Meshal, using a chemical or biological agent to poison Meshal.

An agent most likely from IIBR.

Extrajudicial executions, carried out by Israel in Occupied Palestine, are too well known for the constantly under siege Gazans.

Israel murders Palestinian leaders on a consistent and regular basis, then whines to the world that they can't find any Palestinian leaders to negotiate with.

Chutzpah beyond belief.

Israel had think tanks study the feasibility of surviving an Israeli initiated nuclear war. A war in which Israel plans on nuking the Aswan High Dam, even though Egypt is not part of the hostilities.

Are these the actions of a sane and rational nation? Or the actions of a nation of "evil-doers?"

Need another reason for striking Israel? Remember back to "Operation Desert Slaughter, Part I" in 1991? Recall the tearful testimony of a 'Nayirah" who said she saw Iraqi troops in Kuwait removing babies from incubators, leaving them to die?

This was proved to be a lie, but hey, it was good enough to help "Pappy" Bush launch a war against Iraq.

Now we have proof from reports that the Israeli blockade and cutting of power to Gaza is causing the Director of Emergency and Reception at Gaza's largest hospital, Al Shifa, to choose between cutting electricity to babies in the maternity ward or cutting it to heart patients.

Where's the world's outrage this time? Why isn't another COW being formed to confront the evil-doers in Tel Aviv?

Wasn't another reason given to invade Iraq that it had committed mass murder against its own people?

What about Israel committing genocide against the indigenous people of Palestine? Doesn't that deserve more than a casual look from the COW's?

Since it is Israel that is the main threat to not only peace in the ME, but world-wide, shouldn't the B-2 bombers and cruise missiles be heading to Tel Aviv to smite those "evil-doers" off the face of the earth?

The question should not be "Should the U.S. bomb Israel's secret chemical and biological weapons complex, IIBR, at Nes Ziona?"

The question should be "Why hasn't the U.S. already bombed Israel's secret chemical and biological weapons complex, IIBR, at Nes Ziona?

"Soldier Suicides at Record Level

Dana Priest
Washington Post
Thursday January 31, 2008

Lt. Elizabeth Whiteside, a psychiatric outpatient at Walter Reed Army Medical Center who was waiting for the Army to decide whether to court-martial her for endangering another soldier and turning a gun on herself last year in Iraq, attempted to kill herself Monday evening. In so doing, the 25-year-old Army reservist joined a record number of soldiers who have committed or tried to commit suicide after serving in Iraq or Afghanistan.

"I'm very disappointed with the Army," Whiteside wrote in a note before swallowing dozens of antidepressants and other pills. "Hopefully this will help other soldiers." She was taken to the emergency room early Tuesday. Whiteside, who is now in stable physical condition, learned yesterday that the charges against her had been dismissed.

Whiteside's personal tragedy is part of an alarming phenomenon in the Army's ranks: Suicides among active-duty soldiers in 2007 reached their highest level since the Army began keeping such records in 1980, according to a draft internal study obtained by The Washington Post. Last year, 121 soldiers took their own lives, nearly 20 percent more than in 2006.

At the same time, the number of attempted suicides or self-inflicted injuries in the Army has jumped sixfold since the Iraq war began. Last year, about 2,100 soldiers injured themselves or attempted suicide, compared with about 350 in 2002, according to the U.S. Army Medical Command Suicide Prevention Action Plan.

The Army was unprepared for the high number of suicides and cases of post-traumatic stress disorder among its troops, as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have continued far longer than anticipated. Many Army posts still do not offer enough individual counseling and some soldiers suffering psychological problems complain that they are stigmatized by commanders. Over the past year, four high-level commissions have recommended reforms and Congress has given the military hundreds of millions of dollars to improve its mental health care, but critics charge that significant progress has not been made.

The conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have placed severe stress on the Army, caused in part by repeated and lengthened deployments. Historically, suicide rates tend to decrease when soldiers are in conflicts overseas, but that trend has reversed in recent years. From a suicide rate of 9.8 per 100,000 active-duty soldiers in 2001 -- the lowest rate on record -- the Army reached an all-time high of 17.5 suicides per 100,000 active-duty soldiers in 2006.

Last year, twice as many soldier suicides occurred in the United States than in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Trains, bloggers are threats in US drill" by Ted Bridis, Associated Press 1 hour, 10 minutes ago

It's the government's idea of a really bad day: Washington's Metro trains shut down. Seaport computers in New York go dark. Bloggers reveal locations of railcars with hazardous materials. Airport control towers are disrupted in Philadelphia and Chicago. Overseas, a mysterious liquid is found on London's subway.

And that's just for starters.

Those incidents were among dozens of detailed, mock disasters confronting officials rapid-fire in the U.S. government's biggest-ever "Cyber Storm" war game, according to hundreds of pages of heavily censored files obtained by The Associated Press. The Homeland Security Department ran the exercise to test the nation's hacker defenses, with help from the State Department, Pentagon, Justice Department, CIA, National Security Agency and others.

The laundry list of fictional catastrophes — which include hundreds of people on "No Fly" lists suddenly arriving at airport ticket counters — is significant because it suggests what kind of real-world trouble keeps the White House awake at night. Railway switches failed. Planes flew too close to the White House. Water utilities in Los Angeles were compromised.

Imagined villains include hackers, bloggers and even reporters. After mock electronic attacks overwhelmed computers at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, an unspecified "major news network" airing reports about the attackers refused to reveal its sources to the government. Other simulated reporters were duped into spreading "believable but misleading" information that worsened fallout by confusing the public and financial markets, according to the government's files.

The $3 million, invitation-only war game simulated what the U.S. described as plausible attacks over five days in February 2006 against the technology industry, transportation lines and energy utilities by anti-globalization hackers. The government is organizing another multimillion-dollar war game, Cyber Storm 2, to take place in early March.

The upcoming exercise in March will simulate electronic attacks against chemical plants and communication lines, and include targets in California, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia.

My FALSE-FLAG BLACK-OP SIMULATION ANTENNA'S are going HAYWIRE right now, readers!

"They point out where your expectations of your capabilities may be overstated," Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told the AP. "They may reveal to you things you haven't thought about. It's a good way of testing that you're going to do the job the way you think you were. It's the difference between doing drills and doing a scrimmage."

The AP obtained the Cyber Storm internal records nearly two years after it requested them under the Freedom of Information Act. The government censored most of the 328 pages it turned over, marked "For Official Use Only," citing rules preventing the disclosure of sensitive information. The government is still reviewing hundreds of additional documents before they are turned over to the AP.

"Definitely a challenging scenario," said Scott C. Algeier, who runs a cyber-defense group for leading technology companies, the Information Technology Information Sharing and Analysis Center.

For the participants — including government officials from the United States, England, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and executives from leading technology and transportation companies — the mock disasters came fast and furious: Hacker break-ins at an airline; stolen commercial software blueprints; problems with satellite navigation systems; trouble with police radios in Montana; school closures in Washington, Miami and New York; computer failures at border checkpoints.

The incidents were divided among categories: computer attacks, physical attacks or psychological operations.

"We want to stress these players," said Jeffrey Wright, the former Cyber Storm director for the Homeland Security Department. "None of the players took 100 percent of the correct, right actions. If they had, we wouldn't have done our job as planners."

How did they do? Reviews were mixed. Companies and governments worked successfully in some cases.

But key players didn't understand the role of the premier U.S. organization responsible for fending off major cyber attacks, called the National Cyber Response Coordination Group, and it didn't have enough technical experts.

The sheer number of mock attacks complicated defensive efforts.

The little-known Cyber Response group, headed by the departments of Justice and Homeland Security, represents the largest U.S. government departments — including law enforcement and intelligence agencies — and is the principal organization for responding to cyber attacks and recovering from them.

The exercise had no impact on the real Internet. Officials said they were careful to simulate attacks using only isolated computers, working from basement offices at the Secret Service's headquarters in downtown Washington.

However, the government's files hint at a tantalizing mystery: In the middle of the war game, someone quietly attacked the very computers used to conduct the exercise. Perplexed organizers traced the incident to overzealous players and sent everyone an urgent e-mail marked "IMPORTANT!" reminding them not to probe or attack the game computers.

"Any time you get a group of (information technology) experts together, there's always a desire, 'Let's show them what we can do,'" said George Foresman, a former senior Homeland Security official who oversaw Cyber Storm. "Whether its intent was embarrassment or a prank, we had to temper the enthusiasm of the players."

Oh, like on 9/11?
